The Purina Diet (11.38 / 8)
Yesterday I was buying 2 large bags of Purina dog chow at Wal - Mart for my dogs Dexter, Gypsy, Sky, & Blade. I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. (What did she think, that I had an elephant?) Since I had little else to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side, though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet, and that the way it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry, and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no - I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was
laughing so hard! Wal-Mart won't let me shop there anymore.

Another (9.62 / 8)
My wife sat down on the couch next to me as I was flipping channels. She asked, 'What's on TV?'

I said, 'Dust.'

And then the fight started...

High School Reunion (9.17 / 6)
My wife and I were sitting at a table at my high school reunion, and I kept staring at a drunken lady swigging her drink as she sat alone at a nearby table.

My wife asked, 'Do you know her?'

'Yes,' I sighed, 'She's my old girlfriend. I understand she took to drinking right after we split up those many years ago, and I hear she hasn't been sober since.'

'My God!' says my wife, 'who would think a person could go on celebrating that long?'

And then the fight started ...

i've invited (15.00 / 4)
goinsouth to crosspost that here.

Howdy, Youff! (10.00 / 4)
Interesting link, Youff.

I do think that moving in with family and giving up a certain amount of privacy, independence, and basic comforts and space is way easier said than done, for anybody, first of all.

Secondly, with the way in which I was hardwired together, if things really, really got awful, I'd probably end up living in a situation (such as a group home, or whatever) that I found so totally unpleasant that I could not/would not accept it,  which would not endear me to the others around me.  I've learned that my whole system is very finely tuned due to the way in which I was hardwired together and that kind of drastic change would do me no good.

I fear the idea of living in a place that would be really horrible,  or living out in some rural area, either surrounded totally by people receiving public assistance, or guys like that assholish drunk at my 20th-year high school reunion.  I would not move back to my old hometown, either.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Miki, honey, nobody expects you to move... (13.00 / 5)
I thought Ria & Alma & a bunch of other fireflies would be intrigued by the ideas in the diary.

Me?  I prefer cities myself.  Especially the ones with terrific public transportation...yes, I miss NYC and its subway system.

What intrigued me about the diary was swapping skills you have for skills you don't have:  in your situation, it would be, you make a silver box in exchange for, perhaps, a year's supply of eggs -- just as an example (I have no idea what you charge, but your boxes are gorgeous & must be expensive).

Nobody thinks you should leave the city!  The co-op idea was intriguing for how city co-ops and country co-ops could work in tandem for the greater good of all their citizens.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

The co-op idea is interesting, and so is bartering, (15.00 / 3)
but one has to really know the people that they're really involved with in order for them to really do that.  There was a great deal of experimental (communal and co-optal) living that often involved bartering back in the late 1960's and through much of the 1970's, which failed miserably.  So, in order to get that to work, it has to be done by people who really know, get along with, and like each other.  One of the reasons for the failure of 1960's-1970's experimental living was  due to the fact that many people went too far in adopting the "whole wide world as family" attitude, taking in whoever happened to come along,  often enough with disastrous results.   Plus many small communities also encourage "group thinking", which isn't necessarily and always the best thing either.  Excessive amounts of drug-taking and experimentation and all-too-frequent disputes about what type of food went into the refrigerator and/or pantry were the most common cause of these failures, as well.

As a transplanted suburbanite who happens to prefer urban living and visiting the country from time to time, instead of the other way around,  I'm very satisfied with that kind of lifestyle.

Thanks for your compliments about my sterling silver boxes, Youff.  It must've been painful to have to uproot oneself from a place that one grew up in, knew and loved.  Some people can handle that kind of heartache better than others, and I know that I could not have dealt with leaving the Boston area.  I stuck around the Greater Boston area through my own volition after finishing art school in the early 1980's, although I could've gone anywhere, since I've never had a family that ties me down, and I'm glad I did.

Regarding my sterling silver boxes,  the prices that I've charged for them over the years range from 75 dollars to around the 200.00's, depending on their size, shape, and the kind of design that I have on the lid, and how much material went into making the box, as well as labor.  Since I've learned to make them somewhat more efficiently, I've been able to bring the prices down some, which also helps.  The same goes with making a raised, textured sterling silver bowl.  Making a box or whatever for somebody for a year's supply of eggs or whatever, or any kind of bartering is an interesting idea.    I also might add that there are communities here in the city, in Boston, which also have a history of not being receptive to outsiders, which can also be a problem, although that may be changing in many respects, due to gentrification.

In our community, we now have a "Caring Committee", whose activities involve doing errands or whatever for people who're laid up due to illness or injury, consolation for people who're bereaved in some way or other, and a number of other things.  This Committee is relatively new.

Thanks for your input, Youff.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
