Sunday Open Thoughts

by: Alma

Sun Aug 29, 2010 at 01:00:00 AM EDT

As I've mentioned before there's been a canned pumpkin shortage going on.  According to this old article it might be over soon:

Nestle says that once it runs out, it won't have more pumpkin to can until August, when the 2010 harvest starts. This year's shortage started several months ago and was the result of Libby's not having much surplus from the 2008 crop as a carry-over to sell in September. Nestle said in October that it expected the shortage to ease as the 2009 harvest got underway.
Alma :: Sunday Open Thoughts

But as we wait for it to ease I've been trying to grow some pumpkins for my grandpig Emmet.  Things haven't been going well with the pumpkins.  I've had tons of blooms and itty bitty pumpkins but either the rabbits eat them or they dry up and fall off.  The leaves on the plants have been getting spotty and dry too.

I spent some time today trying to clean up the pumpkin area.  I cut some of the dead out.  Took out the weakest plant and rerouted the vines into the center of the little fence I have around them.  It's probably to late for any of that to help, but I figure its worth a try.

We took Emmet, Nikki and Lala to the vet Friday.  Dr. Greear was amazed at how Lala's boy parts have come out now.  If you saw her today (I'm going to keep calling Lala her) you would wonder how anyone could have ever thought she was female.  Dr. Greear thinks Lalas junk had been caught up and stuck in her inguinal ring .

Guinea pigs have open inguinal rings and the ability to retract their testicles into the abdominal cavity.  Care must be taken by the surgeon to close the rings after castration to prevent the possibility of evisceration.

So this means Lala probably isn't sterile (she just couldn't use her junk before) and we need to keep her and Nikki seperated.  We can either put a divider in their cage with Lala on one side and Nikki on the other or we can put Lala and Jasper together in that cage, (they get along real good) and move Nikki down to Jaspers cage by the other boars.  Either way I feel really bad for Nikki.  I think we will probably put the divider in and at least keep Lala and Nikki close where they can talk and see each other.

Have a Super Splendid Sunday!

Such cuties!  I think there's a piggie living across the street from my local pub now:  The people must have just moved in recently b/c I would have noticed them before.  They use their garage like an open-air den, and I heard these squeals & looked over & there was at least one piggie in a big cage.

Okay, I don't know anything about growing pumpkins.  It does sound like yours need more watering, though (& more rabbit protection).  Maybe it's too late for this year, but for next year, try taking off some of the blossoms so that each plant puts all its energy into producing a few large pumpkins rather than a bunch of small ones.  I don't know for sure, but I don't see why the pumpkin blooms can't be eaten in the same way squash blossoms are.

Maybe call the extension agency in your area for advice on the specific requirements in your climate?

And if you're just growing them for the grandpigs, then it probably doesn't matter; but if you want to get a few pies for all your trouble, you need to look into growing pie pumpkins instead of jack-o-lantern pumpkins (what my mother always called "cow pumpkins").  Pie pumpkins are a very bright orange, don't have the nice rounded bottoms of cow pumpkins, and have a better ratio of meat to seeds, not as much fiber IN that meat, and a nicer flavor.  They are almost certainly what's in those cans you can't get right now.  (Apologies if you already know all this.)

Wish I knew the name of even one variety of pie pumpkin, but I don't.  When I was a kid, though, every year I'd see at least one wagon piled high with them: even from a distance, their bright orange skins gave them away.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

They are (15.00 / 3)
the pie pumpkins.  They are called "Early Sugar or Pie Pumpkin". Thats actually how they have it on the package. They are supposed to end up 8" around.

I think the problem was mainly that I just didn't have time this year.  I got them in late and then Lala got sick right afterwards.  I have a double ring of fencing around them and while I got them watered every day, I didn't get the vines routed back into the rings where they would be safer.  I took off a lot of the blossoms but that didn't seem to work either.  I keep thinking it sounds like lack of water too, but I have managed to water them every day that it hasn't rained except 2 days, I believe.  And the dirt is still moist every day when I go to water, so I don't understand it.  I wish I had installed some of those water gourds that Ria mentioned before.

I doubt if I will try them again next year.  I'm not expecting Emmet to make it that long and hopefully the rest will be healthy and not need it.

On the upside, Amazon and ebay both have cans of pumpkin for sale/bid now.  I hadn't checked ebay before but when we started looking online for canned pumpkin a few months ago even Amazon didn't have it.

Isn't that sweet! (15.00 / 3)
I especially like the photo with one of the guinea pigs peaking out of the Jack-o-Lantern's mouth!  That's so cool!

My reputation online generally must've gone really far south.  Nobody responds to what I post on most of the blogs that I hang out on.  Oh, well!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Jay's discussion of pastrami yesterday (12.33 / 3)
got me thinking about a very funny situation at work.

See, our stores have roller grills for hot dogs and the like.  The two mainstays of the program are Ballpark franks and Hillshire Farms cheddarwursts.  Once the manager ordered a box of pepperjack wursts: they sold very quickly and I adored them too... (and suggested he might order more: he said, "You liked them?"  Well, yes, and MUCH more than the cheddarwursts.)  We also sell a fair amount of Kunzler bratwursts (Kunzler is a fairly large local company, and their brats have a lovely peppery flavor & are not oversalted the way the Hillshire Farms products are.)

Okay, so this week we got a new "treat":  Hillshire Farms beer brats.

So far, nobody I work with who has tried one has liked it.  (Typically it has been take one bite and throw the rest away.)  I kept asking "But what does it taste like?" and yuck is not a very helpful answer.  One coworker said way too salty, which actually does help, but doesn't explain the widespread disgust.

Of course, the fact that Miller beer is part of the ingredient list is NOT a plus.  They couldn't have chosen a tastier beer?  Jeez....

I don't know what the customers think: the beer brats are definitely not selling well, but we just got them in yesterday, so that's not a real surprise.

Intellectually, I suspect that they just might be edible if they were boiled in real beer (the "dirty water dog" of NYC fame, only with beer instead of water) or were used as part of a pork-and-sauerkraut recipe.

But no, I do not have the courage to taste one.  Not until I get a better description than a unanimous yuck! and one "way too salty."

Alma, I HAD to bring this here. (2.50 / 4)
It's not my M.O. -- I would much rather be lighthearted -- but this one needs to be read.

If pics are worth 1000 words, there are many thousands of words here.

Estimated # of Pakistanis displaced by the flooding?  Seventeen million.  And monsoon season isn't over yet.

Check it out, please.

hey guys (15.00 / 3)
and a Super Splendid Sunday to you, too, sister!

most. adorable. piggies. ever!!! thanks for the smiles  :O)

sorry I've been late sitting down to the computer today - we're pretty busy getting prepared for Hurricane Earl. even though the eye is forecast to just miss us to the north, we'll still get the shit beat out of us by the tropical storm winds and rain starting early tomorrow morning. right now we're under a hurricane watch and tropical storm warning, and I'll be staying logged on 'til the the power goes out. it's nothing to worry about, we're well prepared, and turning off the power grid is just standard procedure for any approaching storm.

wish us luck!

I'm still (13.00 / 3)
grinning from reading in the other post that the rabbits are in the cats room.  I bet Juan is right and you will have them all in the house.  LOL

I didn't get much computer time today either.  Dale got 6 discs of pictures from the wedding he was in and we looked at those and I caught up on some gardening and got Lala all settled and was rinsing her bowl, the last thing to do before computer time, when my inlaws came by and stayed for hours.

My MIL was surprised to see Lala, she thought she'd be dead by now from the way she looked last time they were here.  Funny that she thought that since she didn't see Lala last time.  I had Lala in one of her sacks the whole time they were here before.  My FIL once stepped on a mini doberman (I'm pretty sure thats what it was) they had and killed it, so I try and keep my small animals up when he's here.

Good luck brother.  I know you will have the hatches battened down well.

my weekend started around 12:15 -- we actually got out early tonight!  Of course, the fact that it was pretty slow helped enormously....

Hey fireflies! (11.00 / 3)
KAMuston has outdone her/himself today.  From the rescue list:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

It's a very well-written, entertaining look back at an ancient Greek politician.  I think you'll all enjoy it.
