I wanted to put ACTION ALERT! in the subject line, but decided it might scare people.

But I've been reading some of the rescued diaries at Orange & thought this one was of particular interest:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

I've included the comments this time around (there aren't very many, unfortunately) b/c some of them have good advice.  Gooserock's was particularly interesting.

Another personal favorite rescued diary was a slice of history from KAMuston: I dropped that link in Alma's Sunday Open.  You might enjoy it over your morning coffee.

morning dreamers... (9.00 / 5)
it's 4:07am here in PR, and here's the latest radar pic from 3:33am. Hurricane Earl has yet to make his projected turn towards the north, and has continued due west, right for us.

Photobucket

though the u.s. national weather service will not have an update until 5am, our emergency broadcast system here has already upgraded our hurricane watch status to hurricane warning.

there is still the possibility of a northward jog in the storm before reaching us, but right now we're not taking any chances. the winds have already picked up significantly, though the rain has yet to hit.

I'll make these comments a live blog, and post every half hour and keep you guys updated as long as we still have power.

please don't worry, we're battened down and boarded up. all's that's left is to get the rest of the animals in the house, and J just woke up so he'll be helping out when / if the time comes.

gonna make another pot of coffee and then head outside for a bit (the house is hot as hell all boarded up) and take advantage of the strong breezes on the balcony.

talk to ya in a bit!

5am update... (10.50 / 4)
Hurricane Earl

SUMMARY OF 500 AM AST...0900 UTC...INFORMATION
----------------------------------------------
LOCATION...18.3N 62.4W
ABOUT 50 MI...75 KM ENE OF ST. MARTIN
ABOUT 170 MI...275 KM E OF ST. THOMAS
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...105 MPH...165 KM/HR
PRESENT MOVEMENT...WNW OR 285 DEGREES AT 15 MPH...24 KM/HR

MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...969 MB...28.61 INCHES

San Juan's latitude is 18.3N, longitude 67.10W, so if Earl, now a CAT 2, continues WNW then we'll be spared a direct hit. however a turn toward the NW is not expected until tomorrow, so it looks like we will not be spared the tropical force winds and our forecast is for up to 12" of rain.

right now hurricane force winds extend 50 miles from the center of the storm, with tropical force winds extending 175 miles. Hurricane Earl is expected to reach CAT 3 (>110 mph) later this afternoon, and continued strengthening over the next 48 hrs.

prayers for our brothers and sisters in the Caribbean islands that will not be spared from Earl - Antigua, Barbuda, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, St. Martin, St. Barts, Saba, St. Eustatius and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands.

Stay safe, guys.  I know you're gonna be okay, but still...

A bit of culture shock:  The summer between my junior and senior years in h.s. I spent a month in Lawrence, KS at KU's journalism program for h.s. students.  There was one girl from Hawaii there, and a whole bunch of kids from the south or midwest.  The Hawaiian was terrified of tornadoes, and one of the kids from tornado alley said (paraphrase) "They aren't that scary.  You get hurricanes, don't you?"

LOL: the upshot was, people were more frightened of the storms they didn't see annually than the ones they did.

all's ok here, the rain is something else, but at least the hurricane force winds are just to our northeast. the gusts we're getting are nothing to sneeze at, but since we're not in a low lying area where there are mandatory evacuations due to the flooding, we'll be ok.

riding the storm out, indeed! you're the best, man

our lights have been out for about an hour now, right now I'm on battery backup power so it's time to shut down. but please don't worry guys. I'll check in as soon as the power's back on.

To Ria, Youff and irev... (14.00 / 6)
The shrimp and grits w/ pastrami worked, and was good.

Although I'm certainly no expert on shrimp & grits, I think the switch worked out fine...

:)

Everything tasted well in the end!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Glad that it all worked out for you, JayinPortland. (14.75 / 4)
Improvising on a recipe is an interesting idea, but who knows if it'll necessarily and/or always work?   I'm admittedly not a shrimp and grits expert either, but,  had it been me,  I would've gone out and purchased the bacon prior to making the Shrimp and Grits, because, when it comes to any given recipe, I'm a stickler for using the exact ingredients that it calls for.  Subsequently, when I plan to bake or cook something, I make sure that I have all the right essential ingredients for the recipe before I proceed, if one gets the drift.  Different strokes for different folks.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Hey, Miki, I'm with you re: baking (11.00 / 5)
(unless it's bread: I have enough experience with that to know when/what I can substitute) but for new recipes, like when I first learned to cook Cajun (thanks, Paul Prudhomme!) I was a stickler for following the recipe exactly.

For me, with practice, I've learned where I can play with ingredients and where I absolutely cannot.  Like last week, when I made a frittata and put some bread into it: it turned out great.  I might make something similar this week, except try to make a true savory bread pudding instead of a frittata/bread pudding hybrid.

Or not.

If I were cooking for a dinner party, though, I probably wouldn't experiment too much, LOL.  Don't want the guests to go yuck!  ;-D

[ Parent ]
Since I'm a stickler for going by the book, and I tend to plan things out carefully before I proceed, (15.00 / 4)
cook or bake anything.  Certain things I can and do improvise on somewhat, such as pasta sauce, beef stroganoff, and even a rice pilaf.  But, there are  limits, to me.  Things such as my favorite chocolate pound cake, Chile con Carne, and pretty much any type of dessert that I'd cook.  I do agree with the idea about not experimenting and improvising when it came to cooking and baking for a dinner party, however.  (yuck!)

My mom used to make excellent chicken soup with all the works; chicken, matzoh balls...you name it.  Borsch, too!
The borsch she made was a real meal in itself, particularly when sour cream and/or scallions were added to it.  I've learned to make my own version of chicken soup and chicken liver or beef stroganoff from my mom.  If I'm cooking something special, however, I will not improvise at all.

Sometimes, what I'll do, however, is to bake a Yukon Gold potato in the microwave oven, then add cut  up swiss or cheddar (sharp) cheese to it, along with olive oil and one or two raw garlic cloves to it.   Yum.  The same thing with a bowl of Pasta, for breakfast, or something.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
heh...matzoh ball soup (15.00 / 4)
is a specialty of mine.  I used to always use the recipe on the back of the box of matzoh meal...not Manishevitz, Streit's matzoh meal.

Now they've changed their recipe so it's "healthier."  Healthier it might be: but it is not as good.  (If I wanted Manischevitz sink-like-a-stone-in-your-stomach matzoh balls, I would never have switched to Streit's in the first place.)  I still make my own schmaltz: vegetable oil just isn't as good.  So that's become a don't-follow-the-recipe-exactly case for me, as I try to remember what their recipe was 20-30 years ago when I first learned to make terrific matzoh balls.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

[ Parent ]
Thanks for your input, Youff. (15.00 / 3)
Matzoh ball soup!  I love it--and it's excellent for colds, too.  What kind of oil do you use for your matzoh balls, Youff?  Just curious, because I can't see using vegetable oil in matzoh balls, either.  Streit's is very good, and I like their matzoh.  Not too long ago, I saw some (gasp) Israeli matzoh ball meal at Whole Foods store and I (gasp) purchased it, used it, and it came out quite good.

Oh, speaking of matzoh balls, one mustn't forget the eggs, either.  One thing is certain, however;  one can end up with enough matzoh balls to feed an army, especially because they expand so much when they're boiled!  I won't ask you to share your recipe with us, because I know you wouldn't want to give away your secrets, but...yummmmm...this is making me hungry!!

Speaking of cooking, etc.,   The pet store where I bought Aziza even sells Birdie bread loaf mixtures, of at least 4 or 5 different flavors.   All I need to do is add water, 2 Tbsp of corn oil and 2 eggs, including the egg shells, knead the mixture in a bowl, bake it for a half hour, let it cool, and I'm done.  I then cut it into somewhat rectangularish cubes, put it in bags and then freeze them.  I give Aziza one cube per day.  She loves her birdie bread!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Well, ya got me on the bird food! (15.00 / 3)
I know nothing -- literally, nothing -- about exotic birds, except that Aziza is gorgeous & very smart.

I used to always use the recipe on the back of the Streit's box.  Instead of oil, I would render my own schmaltz (when you're making the chicken stock, take some of the fat and slow-cook it over very low heat until the fat cooks out: this is schmaltz.  Then use the schmaltz in place of butter or oil in the matzoh balls.)  Yes: about two eggs.  Some people add chopped-up parsley, or onion/garlic powder, or the like.  And a friend of mine told me that her caterer aunt used seltzer water instead of cold water for the matzoh balls, to make them lighter.

I've tried 'em both ways.  I think the important part is that the water/seltzer needs to be cold.  Don't think the bubbles have anything to do with it.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

[ Parent ]
Hmmm...interesting ideas about how to make matzoh balls, Youff. (15.00 / 2)
Aziza is gorgeous & very smart.

Thanks for the compliments about Aziza, and the heads-up regarding making matzoh balls.  I've never heard of using seltzer, but I do know that the water does have to be cold.  Onions, parsely and garlic sound like great flavor additions.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

O/T:  NPR just reported Hurricane Earl is forecast to strengthen to a Category 4.  They're still calling for it to turn north, though, and were talking about whether it would/would not make landfall in the Carolinas.
