"Woodstock" reminded me of this (15.00 / 5)

I remember both of these songs, as well as the people who wrote and sang them. (14.67 / 6)
Canned Heat, as I recall, broke up quite some time ago, and, I think (correct me if I'm wrong, anybody) that the leading vocalist of Canned Heat, whose name escapes me at the moment, died of a heroin overdose.  Goin' Up Country was kind of a cool, wierd song, and so was Poor Moon, and On the Road Again.

Joni Mitchell had a rather cool voice, although I heard she acted in a rather arrogant way at one of the Concerts she gave in Boston, on the common one season.  She not only sang very badly that night, but acted quite arrogantly, to boot, and people were demanding their money back and walking out.  I wasn't there for that particular concert, but I did read/hear about it the next day.  A lot of these stars are big on studio recording and don't really care to knock themselves out for the public.  She had some rather cool songs, among which of was the above-posted Woodstock song.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

On the Road Again and Poor Moon (15.00 / 6)
Thanks for reminding me, mplo!

And some of my favorite Joni (15.00 / 5)
These are some nice vids. I'm sorry to hear she had a bad day in Boston. I've had a few of those myself!

One of her early hits

One of my all time faves

Thanks, incessantrevolutions. (15.00 / 3)
Joni Mitchell's Yellow Taxi was one of my favorites, too, as is Poor Moon by the Canned Heat.

It's funny how I was not aware of the real meaning and messages of these two songs until quite recently;  How our environment is being destroyed.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

environmental consciousness (14.00 / 2)
When modern environmental consciousness first came into being, I was a small lad. But it soon became not just the realm of the DFH's but also mainstream conservatives. I guess it faded out of the consciousness of the mainstream conservatives almost as soon as it arrived, though. Now, conservatives view our environmental responsibilities as an impingement on their gawd-given rights to destroy whatever they please in their pursuit of 'happiness'. And efforts to save ourselves from the destruction of nature are viewed as a vast conspiracy to control them and impose evil limitations on them. sigh...
We certainly have come a long way in my lifetime, and I hope that we can find our way back soon to where the DFH's were in the sixties.

Blind Al (15.00 / 4)
I caught Canned Heat in Lambertville N.J. in the late sixties and was very partial to "Blind Al the Owl" Wilson and his strange high pitched singing.

With Canned Heat, Wilson performed at two prominent concerts of the 1960s era, the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969. Canned Heat appeared in the film Woodstock, and the band's "Going Up the Country," which Wilson sang, has been referred to as the festival's unofficial theme song.[1] Wilson also wrote "On the Road Again," arguably Canned Heat's second-most familiar song.

Wilson was a fanatical conservationist who loved reading books on botany and ecology. He often slept outdoors to be closer to nature. In 1969, he wrote and recorded a song, "Poor Moon", which expressed concern over potential pollution of the moon. He wrote an essay called 'Grim Harvest', about the coastal redwood forests of California, which was printed as the liner notes to the Future Blues album by Canned Heat.

After Eddie 'Son' House's 'rediscovery' in 1964, Wilson taught him how to play again the songs House had recorded in 1930 and 1942 (which he had forgotten over a long absence from music); House recorded for Columbia in 1965 and two of three selections featuring Wilson on harmonica and guitar appeared on the set. On the double album Hooker 'N Heat (1970), John Lee Hooker is heard wondering how Wilson is capable of following Hooker's guitar playing so well. Hooker was known to be a difficult performer to accompany, partly because of his disregard of song form. Yet Wilson seemed to have no trouble at all following him on this album. Hooker concludes that "you [Wilson] musta been listenin' to my records all your life".

Wilson died in Topanga Canyon, California of a drug overdose at age 27. Although Wilson had reportedly attempted suicide twice before and his death is sometimes reported as a suicide, this is not clearly established as he left no note.[2]

"the world is full of admirable craftsmen but so few practical dreamers" Man Ray

OT (14.00 / 2)
i just want to say i love your sig line!
practical dreamers.... what a brilliant phrasing

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

Man Ray (13.67 / 3)
Yeah, that is a hoot of line isn't it; and memorable, I've been carrying it around forever and it just hit me the other day what a perfect sig line it was, my first I might add. It probably has something to do with goinsouth's very practical suggestions for the future, combined with your "firefly-dreaming" site name.

I had a book of Man Ray's photos and paintings, surrealism is a favorite style of mine and he said that when you view art you should try and not be overly impressed with technique because "the world is full of admirable craftsmen but so few practical dreamers.  Man, you don't forget something like that once you hear it.

The concept itself is surreal linking two ideas that on the surface would appear to be unrelatable to each other. Surrealisms express goal of purposely shocking the mind in order to expand its potential has real value in a psychedelic sense.

As for our tendency to become enamored with the surface values of technique while neglecting to be focused on substance, is widespread in all the arts of today from music to film. Another thing I remember him saying was that he had to leave America for Europe because art was not considered a thing of value here.
