Good morning, all (11.67 / 3)
Looks like Hurricane Earl won't hit Hatteras directly (but will still be a good-sized storm there).  Philly is expecting a slight chance of rain tomorrow from it, so we probably won't see anything here except, maybe, winds.

Nova Scotia is expected to be directly hit, though, according to current models.

Its taken (12.50 / 4)
me years to get used to this schedule Ria.  I was always a morning person.

I still would be a morning person if the rest of my family weren't such night owls.  I used to get up and get stuff done.  Now the evening seems to be the only time I get motivated and then I hurry through stuff so I can watch Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow.

The new blender works fantastic.  It only took seconds and very little added water to get Lalas squash juice as smooth as could be.  It must have been really yummy with less water too.  Lala dived right into the bowl and drank/ate it on her own.  Maybe I'll only have to syringe her critical care food to her now and can retire the syringe for other liquids.

yea, Lala!!! (13.67 / 3)
I'm so happy he's doing well, sister! (it'll take me a while to get used to calling him "he", but I'm glad you decided to not change his name!  :O)

I'm (12.33 / 3)
just going to keep calling him a she.  I figure Lalas used to me calling her my little girl and such.  And while she doesn't know what I'm saying, she does know the sound and tone of voice and that its for her.  Besides, I'm old and its hard to change.  ;)

[ Parent ]
alrighty then! (13.00 / 3)
to tell the truth, she would always be a she to me! let her know I'm still sending all my love  :O)

aw shit... (11.00 / 3)
it's being reported right now on CNN International that another oil rig has exploded in the gulf. details are still coming in, and it's not known if even more oil is spilling into the Gulf. this is all so unbelievable...

good news... (14.25 / 4)
there were 13 crew members aboard and it's being reported that they're all o.k. and accounted for. I hope this initial report holds true.

No matter what the good news is, (11.75 / 4)
there's just  no excuse for our Washington Administration and Big Oil keeping on keeping on, especially at this point.

Therefore, I say that this Administration is far too casual and cavalier about the environment, the ecosystems and human lives, especially given the last big oil gusher that we just had, if one gets the drift.  What the hell's wrong with these people?  Is there no accountability and sense of responsibility any more?  I guess not.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The best news was that this one didn't leak anything but: yes, shut 'em all down.

Damn.  When I voted for Obama, I knew damn well I wasn't voting for a progressive.

I DID, however, hope I wasn't voting for another Raygun.

Truth be told, I started my original one earlier, well before 8 this morning. It took a long time to write it, and, (15.00 / 4)
thanks to some glitch somewhere, somehow, the whole diary just plain disappeared.  Between that and the guy arriving a little after ten to replace the heating element in my dishwasher, it was delayed.  it's not that it was forgotten.  Just so everybody knows.

exploded rig is LEAKING OIL (11.00 / 3)

By ALAN SAYRE, Associated Press Writer - 1 min ago

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Coast Guard is saying that a mile-long oil sheen is spreading from the site off an offshore petroleum platform that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana.

The site of the explosion is west of where BP's massive spill occurred.

The Coast Guard said no one was killed Thursday in the explosion. The blast was spotted by a commercial helicopter flying over the site.

All 13 people aboard the rig were found floating in the water in survival gear.

leaking exploded rig update (11.00 / 3)
(i'm putting the entire article in because they keep changing it)

By ALAN SAYRE, Associated Press Writer - 24 mins ago

NEW ORLEANS, La. - A mile-long oil sheen spread Thursday from an offshore petroleum platform burning in the Gulf of Mexico off Lousiana, west of the site of BP's massive spill.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Bill Coklough said the sheen, about 100 feet wide, was spotted near the platform owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy Inc.

He said Mariner had deployed three firefighting vessels to the site and one already was in place fighting the blaze.

The Coast Guard says no one was killed in the explosion and fire, which was reported by a commercial helicopter flying over the site around 9 a.m. CDT. All 13 people aboard the rig were rescued as they floated in the nearby water in survival outfits called gumby suits.

The platform is in about 340 feet of water and about 100 miles south of Vermilion Bay on the central Louisiana coast. It's location is considered shallow water, much less than the approximately 5,000 feet where BP's well spewed oil and gas for three months after an April rig explosion.

All 13 people aboard the rig were found floating in the water, sticking close together, Coast Guard spokesman Chief Petty Officer John Edwards said.

"These guys had the presence of mind, used their training to get into those gumby suits before they entered the water. It speaks volumes to safety training and the importance of it because beyond getting off the rig there's all the hazards of the water such as hypothermia and things of that nature," Edwards said.

All were being flown to a hospital in Houma to be checked over. Coast Guard Cmdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau said one person was injured, but the platform's owner, Houston-based Mariner Energy, Inc., said there were no injuries.

"Mariner has notified and is working with regulatory authorities in response to this incident. The cause is not known, and an investigation will be undertaken," the company said in a statement. It said the platform was located on Vermilion Block 380, approximately 100 miles off the Louisiana coast.

The platform is a fixed petroleum platform that was in production at the time of the fire, according to a homeland security operational update obtained by The Associated Press.

The update said the platform was producing about 58,800 gallons of oil and 900,000 cubic feet of gas per day. The platform can store 4,200 gallons of oil.

Seven Coast Guard helicopters, two airplanes and three cutters were dispatched to the scene from New Orleans, Houston and Mobile, Ala., Ben-Iesau said. She said authorities do not know whether oil was leaking from the site.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama was in a national security meeting and did not know whether Obama had been informed of the explosion.

"We obviously have response assets ready for deployment should we receive reports of pollution in the water," Gibbs said.

Mariner Energy focuses on oil and gas exploration and production in the Gulf of Mexico. In April, Apache Corp., another independent petroleum company, announced plans to buy Mariner in a cash-and-stock deal valued at $3.9 billion, including the assumption of about $1.2 billion of Mariner's debt. That deal is pending.

Apache spokesman Bob Dye said the platform is in shallow water. Responding to any oil spill in shallow water would be much easier than in deep water, where crews depend on remote-operated vehicles access equipment on the sea floor. Mariner said in initial flyover for no hydrocarbon spill.

A company report said the well was drilled in the third quarter of 2008.

The platform is about 200 miles west of BP's blown-out well. On Friday, BP was expected to begin the process of removing the cap and failed blowout preventer, another step toward completion of a relief well that would put a finals eal on the well. The BP-leased rig Deepwater Horizon exploded April 20, killing 11 people and setting off a three-month leak that totaled 206 million gallons of oil .

Associated Press writers Janet McConnaughey in New Orleans, Chris Kahn in New York and Eileen Sullivan, Matthew Daly and Gerry Bodlander in Washington contributed to this report.

We had (11.00 / 3)
some tornados today.  We are all okay.  Power was out for about 5 hours.  I'm really surprised they got it back on so quick because theres trees and power lines down all over. They had roads closed all over and in a town where theres not many roads that can be a problem.  Some of the city was still without power last I knew.  The street behind my moms house got it real bad.  My mom had a little roof damage but my brother, BIL, hubby and son got it all fixed up.  Luckily she had some shingles in her garage.

The restaurant stayed open for us again even though we were late going since the guys wanted to finish moms roof before we went.

There were news helicopters flying around all day.  I told the guys they missed their chance that they should have all stood up on the roof and given the helicopters the family wave.  ;)

gha! (10.33 / 3)
so happy you guys are all ok. believe me, I'd rather a hurricane than a tornado dropping out of nowhere anyday!

You and me both, Newp.... (15.00 / 3)
My father, in his final years, kept saying that he never remembered tornadoes here.

Well, I dunno.  But it sure seemed like there was at least one tornado warning every summer the whole time I was growing up.

I also remember some trailer parks being flattened: not every year, no, but once or twice.

My memory could be faulty.

So could his.

This isn't Hurricane Alley, but it's next door.

The nws (9.00 / 1)
is saying it was straight line winds from microbursts and not tornados.  A specialist was coming out yesterday to decide which it was but I haven't heard how that judgement came out.

I knew straight line winds would break trees but I didn't know they would pick roofs up and drop them off into fields.  Nor did I know they could decimate a mile long strip of trees.

While I've watched tornados going down the river the only tornado I remember having in town was when I was a kid ( and we were out of town in WVA at the time).  But we get tornado watches every year and warnings sometimes.

Watching Rutgers... (15.00 / 4)
This game was embarrassing up until a few minutes ago (only 6-0 over Norfolk State, halfway into the 3rd quarter?!), now it's a little better.  14-0 after a TD and a 2-pt conversion.

Watching live online, ESPN3.com is a pretty cool site I hadn't known about before.  Hope they carry more Rutgers games this year, since the networks apparently gave up on RU after Schiano crapped the bed yet again last year (he needs to go - he's an assistant coach at best.  great recruiter, great guy, but not major college football head coach material.), and they're only scheduled for two national games (ESPN) this year and zero network teevee feature games.

Tom Savage (sophomore QB) looks great, Mohamed Sanu is My Man!  Martinek's running crazy all over the field, and it looks like we have at least two other good young WR's to compliment Sanu.  The defense is looking like a B+.  I'm satisfied.

Looks like it's a good thing we esentially scheduled an exhibition game to open the season...

(Update: TD! RU 21, Norfolk State 0)

Problem is they can't finish drives, and they can't kick field goals!!!

Arghhhh!!!!

Special Teams needs work, and the O-Line looks (and is) a little inexperienced.  Things to work on.

RU ain't winning the Big East this year (and if you ask me, they ain't gonna win it until they get a real head coach), and 8 wins looks to be about right.  Another ho-hum year, with a mid-December date in some anonymous Bowl against a MAC team.

Wait and see, hopefully I'm underestimating them.  They are a very young team, and the schedule is a pretty good one to break in the kids before we hit the hard conference games.

I'd be ecstatic with ten wins!

:)

I really want to (finally!) beat West friggin' Virginia this year...

But seriously, I'll give Schiano one more year.  If we don't win the Big East by next year, he needs to go.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Academic Progress Rate... (14.75 / 4)

San San Te! (15.00 / 4)
Boom!

Redemption...

San San Te (aka the college football kicker with the coolest name on the planet) just nailed another field goal, he's now 3 of 5 on the day.

I think it's pretty safe to chalk up his first two misses to opening day nerves (and recovery from last year's back surgery).

Okay, now I'm feeling much better about this season.

31-0 Rutgers.  Savage is a leader (and only a sophomore!), and the defense looks great.  Sanu is magic.  The O-Line is looking solid since halftime.

Bring on Florida International!

Another tune-up for the kids, we'll see where we really stand then.

Before the first test - game 3 against #18 North Carolina.

The Big East schedule is brutal this year, though.  At Cincy, WV and Pitt!

Good news at least, is that they all have to play in NJ next year, when we should be loaded with our best team since 2006 (and before that, the 1961* and 1976 undefeated teams).

Anything less than 11 wins and a Big East title next year is unacceptable.

*The 1961 Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team would have played in the Rose Bowl, if not for the fact that the University's President at the time thumbed his nose at athletics

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...
