Hiya, Jay! (waves) (15.00 / 4)
The Cure did "Friday I'm in Love"?  Didn't know that.  Did anyone else ever cover it?

It gets played all the time at work, and never sounded like them to me...although maybe it is the original version.  I'm not willing to turn off my jazz to listen right now, sorry, but WRTI is playing some great stuff -- after-work relaxation music, y'know, plus I have to listen to the goddamn song every shift, and have been hearing it for most of the past year: again, every shift at least once.

Can you spell sick of it already boys and girls?  I knew you could.

Sorry, Sweetie: not venting at you.  I was even sicker of the previous manager's choice of music than I am of this one's.  Liked the previous manager better both as a person and as a manager, but her choice of music drove me nuts -- and that's not a long drive, lol.

Have to do it... (15.00 / 4)

Rutgers over #3 Louisville, November 9, 2006.  Biggest win in school history up to that date...

Pitt lost to Utah today!!!!

HA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ov. Er. Rated!!!!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Opening day open thoughts... (15.00 / 4)
Tom Savage (sophomore QB) is a leader, and will be great next year.  Mohamed Sanu is magic.  Joe Martinek will be one of the top backs in the Big East.  He looks like Brian Leonard at times.

The defense looked like a B+ in the first half, and an A in the second half.

Granted, it (31-0 win) was against Norfolk State but still.  The second half was a perfect half of football.

This (very young) team really will have no excuses not to win the Big East next year.

This year, two out of four wins against Pitt, Cincy, UConn and West f&#$*(% Virginia would make me very happy.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
erm...okay... (13.25 / 4)
(backing away slowly)...

Pitt lost, is about the only thing I understood: oh, and Rutgers won.

Norfolk State lost to whom?  Rutgers again?

Honestly, honey, ya gotta give us non-football types a tiny bit more info...I don't even read the NYT sports pages unless everything else in the paper has been read to death and I am very bored.  Or if it's about horse racing, or women's tennis.

I usually operate... (15.00 / 4)
...here on the premise of "the less info, the better", when it comes to my sports ramblings.

But if you want me to provide more, I can.  Oh, I can!!!!

Heh.

Yes, Rutgers opened the season against Norfolk State, an FCS team.  Essentially, the minor leagues of college football.  A tune-up game, and although we fans were upset with the ridiculously weak scheduling (next week they play Florida International, an FBS "major league" team but still probably one of the two or three worst ones out there), it looks like this was a good plan to break in a very young team.

They have no excuses now not to be ready for Week 3, against a very good and highly-ranked North Carolina.  Who btw turned out to be a criminal organization whose entire starting defense may be suspended for weeks due to an NCAA mandate, but that's another story for another time...

;)

The halftime score today was embarrassing (6-0), but fortunately Rutgers finished strong in the second half and won 31-0.  Three years ago, they beat Norfolk State 59-0 and set a scoring record with 42 points in the second quarter.

Pitt was crowned "the favorite" in the Big East during the preseason (although anybody with a brain should realize a Dave Wannstedt-coached team will never win anything at any level) by most of "the experts", and really I'm having more fun right now with their opening day loss to Utah (who will join the PAC-10 next year) than should be allowed by law.

I think the Big East this year will be won by West f&$#*(^ Virginia, with UConn, Cincy and Rutgers behind in that order.

Next year, Rutgers has to (finally) win the Big East or Greg Schiano has to go.  This team will be stacked next year, and there's no reason why the Scarlet Knights shouldn't be in the National Championship conversation in 2011/12.

Schiano did an amazing job turning the program around (I'm sure you know the joke - Rutgers won the first college football game in history in 1869 over Princeton, and they haven't won anything since, har har har...), and he's a great guy and a great recruiter and he has his priorities in the right place (Rutgers = #1 in Academic Progress Rate in the nation!)... but there comes a time when you have to actually win something once in a while.

Schiano's an assistant coach, he's not head coach material.  Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but I doubt he will.  If he was head coach material, Penn State or Miami (the two other schools has ties with) would have hired him away years ago.  Speaks volumes that they didn't even try.

I'll move back to New Jersey if Rutgers wants to hire me as head football coach after next year.

:)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

List of Jay's Top 5 dream jobs -

1, 2, 3, 4, 5.  Rutgers Head Football Coach

:)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Plans to implement same... (13.25 / 4)
Here is how I will win at Rutgers, straight from a certain somebody's playbook:

1. Promise a Big East Championship.

2. Luck out and run against a pair of nutbags who wouldn't even win election in a horror flick

3. Win job

4. Appoint a commission to consider surrendering to West Virginia, while claiming that I don't want to surrender to West Virginia.

5. Override university vote against setting up commission to consider surrendering to West Virginia.

6. Appoint a commission to consider surrendering to West Virginia, while claiming that I don't want to surrender to West Virginia, and please ignore the fact that I overrode a university vote against setting up a commission to consider surrendering to West Virginia.

7. Appoint 9 West Virginians to an 18 person panel, along with 9 New Jerseyans who lean towards surrendering to West Virginia, to commission.

8. Praise West Virginia Football in a national speech for being an unassailably patriotic organization, and one we should all hug and rub up against in erotic ways.

9. Somehow arrange for thousands of bloggers to rabidly defend me and act as if even mentioning the facts of what I've actually done are an unforgivable insult against their sainted mother's honor.

10. Surrender to West Virginia, and claim the West Virginians made me do it and that I had no choice.  Thousands of bloggers will still defend me, and praise my decisions.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

erm...a plea? (12.75 / 4)
When you get that job, will you hire me as your secretary/personal assistant/someone who knows how to both work phones and do paperwork and is still a touch typist?

Honestly, that job was made for me.

;-D  (Yes, grin: but I AM NOT JOKING.  I might not be completely confident when it comes to Windows software, but I can type & handle phones, and ... well ... it would be nice to have a job within my skill level instead of something where my bosses can't spell or write a coherent sentence:  and they are my bosses?

Heh... (15.00 / 4)
But seriously, I'd bring a B(c)S national championship to Rutgers within three years of my hire.

;)

You'd be one of the first people I got in touch with to hire!  Football coach or restaurant / butcher shop!

Btw, whatever happened with that other thing you talked about a few weeks back?  Yes, no?  Good, bad?

well ... it would be nice to have a job within my skill level instead of something where my bosses can't spell or write a coherent sentence:  and they are my bosses?

Ughh, don't remind me.  I have absolutely no idea how they do it, people who don't even know the difference between "its" and "it's", yet still somehow have a degree from OSU and run warehouses...

I've recently filled out application questionnaires with things like "would you of done this or that?"

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRHGGGGGGGGHGHHHHHHHHHHHH, indeed!!!!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

LOL! (9.75 / 4)
I'd of called 'em brilliant if they could recognize the difference:

its vs. it's

your vs. you're

and, as per always:

their vs. they're vs. there.

My bosses cannot distinguish among any of the above.

I kid you not.

I am delighted when they can spell "and" and "the."

Not everyone is good at spelling... (11.75 / 4)
Something the Dog Said admits his dyslexia: of course I give him a pass.  Samuel R. (Chip) Delaney is also dyslexic, and reportedly drives his copyeditors crazy: but he's a wonderful, poetic writer.  He gets a pass too.

I'm talking about people who literally cannot communicate in the written word, spelling errors or none.  In one case, he cannot communicate very well (to me, at least) in spoken English either.  But the writing?

OMFG, it's like something a second-grader might come up with.  Subject/verb agreement?  Out the window.  Concept of sentence structure?  Never had it.  ugh  It's inimitable b/c I can't even think of how to imitate:  I've been doing this since elementary school (writing, that is, and learning how to structure a sentence for greatest impact) ... seeing shit like that just makes me want to bleach my brain.

Not to mention that it probably takes me longer to decipher any messages about what, exactly, I'm supposed to accomplish during my shift than it would take to actually, y'know, do the work.

Heh: P.S. (15.00 / 4)
I sometimes wonder how well he deciphers my late-night scribbled notes about what went wrong: for example, the time someone tried to pay using a couple of gift cards that didn't have anywhere near enough cash left on them, then used their Food Stamps to pay for the remainder of the bill.

Well.

Our computers require that you use the Food Stamps first.  After that, the icon grays out & it literally cannot be entered into the computer.

Only recourse?  End the session by hitting cash/exact amount & stapling all receipts together.

And writing a note about what happened.

I DO hope his reading skills are slightly better than his writing skills.

Either that, or hope S. explains it to him in the a.m.  She's smart & as far as I can tell, literate too.

corrected version:

You're so right, Youff, and I guess on more than one occasion I've made a mess of our language:  it's so hard.  Instead of studying, or even looking shit up, *it's" sorta like men asking for directions:  We never do.  We would rather drive you around for many hours and never let you use a bathroom than stop and actually ask for directions.

Well. I didn't realize you were such a (15.00 / 4)
Rutgers fan...perhaps I SHOULD have, but didn't.

For your sake, I hope Rutgers beats the shit out of the rest of them.

Penn State doesn't look like a winner this year, I guess.

Don't really care: except, I think Joe Paterno is (mostly) a good man.  And I'm not sure I would say the same thing about other coaches for other teams...if ya know what I mean.

JoePa... (15.00 / 4)
...is a good guy.  One of the last in major college football.

I'll be sad to see him go, fwiw.

I dislike Penn State, especially since they spent decades strip-mining New Jersey for some of their best players back when Rutgers (mostly) sucked (I went to high school with a great QB who chose PSU over Rutgers), but that doesn't mean I don't admire Joe!!!

Chip Kelly (Oregon) is another good guy, as well.  A real throwback to the days when character mattered most, as evidenced already by many of his decisions (Blount and Massoli, amongst others).

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
See, that's what I've always heard about Paterno. (12.00 / 4)
Now, I remember when the football team basically went rogue & also remember when I was a student there, and the football team felt it could rape any woman it wanted to rape.

Obviously, this did not go over very well with the rest of the female populace.

But mostly, I think Joe is an improvement over the alternatives.

Oh! Kathleen! (12.20 / 5)
Obviously you know your brother & I do not...but maybe chill him out with some fun reading?

Highly rec'd:  Connie Willis, "At the Rialto" (quantum physics)
Connie Willis, "Spice Pogrom" (the aliens land:  Connie's tribute to the old screwball comedies...I've read it about ten times over the years.)

And I read this about every two years:  Connie Willis, To Say Nothing of the Dog.  A very funny time travel novel.

Meanwhile, be well, friend.  I miss you.

good news! (13.20 / 5)
well, great news for us!! tropical storm, predicted to be our next big hurricane, Gaston disappeared overnight! POOF! GONE! KAPUT!! now it's just a remnant low pressure system and won't be bothering anyone, anywhere!

hurricane season isn't over by a long shot for us, and the tropical waves keep coming off the African coast fast and furious, but Gaston's sudden demise makes me very, very happy!

now if Earl would do the right thing and just stay the hell away from the coast!?!

Gaston is back from the dead (9.00 / 4)
The two at 2amEDT Sat:

THE REMNANT LOW OF GASTON LOCATED ABOUT 1150 MILES EAST OF THE
LEEWARD ISLANDS IS MOVING WESTWARD AT AROUND 10 MPH. SHOWERS AND
THUNDERSTORMS HAVE CONTINUED TO INCREASE NEAR AND TO THE NORTHWEST
OF THE CENTER OF CIRCULATION...AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE
CONDUCIVE FOR GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT. IF THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUE TO
FORM NEAR THE CENTER...THEN ADVISORIES COULD BE RE-INITIATED ON
THIS SYSTEM LATER TODAY. THERE IS A HIGH CHANCE...70 PERCENT...
OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A TROPICAL CYCLONE AGAIN DURING THE NEXT
48 HOURS.
