My great grandfather (12.33 / 3)
did a recording of The Preacher and the Bear in 1927.  It was reissued several years ago and I got the cassett for my dad.  We have some of those old test records of his too.  He recorded and recruited for Paramount at the high point of his career.

The recording by John McGhee has been reissued on
an LP, Old Homestead OHCS-141 "West Virginia Hills" (Old Homestead
Records, Box 100, Brighton, MI 48116).

Wow! (13.33 / 3)
That is so cool.

Have you heard this one?

Now I'm (9.50 / 2)
crying and I didn't even listen to it.  I don't have easy access to the speakers on this machine and hate headphones so I rarely actually listen to anything on the computer.

There's a family story on Bill Bailey.  Pa actually wrote it about one of his sons, my Uncle Bill,(whose name wasn't actually Bill, but most in the family went by names different than their real ones, another family story for another time) but Pa's partner took credit for it and is listed as the writer.  There is an old test record Pa made with the song on it with more verses than what ended up as the final song that was recorded before the partner supposedly wrote the song.  Bill Bailey, my uncle Bill, ended up killing himself when I was in elementary school.

The crying was a good crying BTW as memories of my dads family came to me fast and furious.  :)

I'm glad/sad for you dear Alma (6.50 / 2)
I'm glad/sad that I rekindled the old memories for you. You are right, sometimes crying is good. It can bring both a release from and celebration of the things we remember and cherish, all at the same time, for me at least...

I do have a love for this early American music, so I went on an internet search to find this and learned how to make a youtube video and created an account so I could share what I found with you and our firefly friends. So far I haven't found any other actual sound files, but if I do, I'll share them here as well, if that's OK with you. I do have them marked as 'private' on youtube, so that you can only get to them if you know the link - they don't turn up in searches.

I was fascinated by the fact that your ggpa is credited as the original writer of the verses for "Will the Circle be Unbroken" that are used around the old hymn used for the chorus as made famous by the early Carter Family recording. That is such a huge old-time country standard. If you can't sing or play that one on your fiddle/guitar/banjer, you just ain't country!

The mp3s and pic of the label came from a website called Allen's Archive of Early Old Country Music.

Bill Bailey, Ain`t That A Shame/I Got Mine - Champion 15503
John McGhee (as John Hutchens)
Recorded Dec. 31, 1927 & April 24, 1928
Both of these songs are funny songs. The Bill Bailey, Ain`t That A Shame is not the typical Bill Bailey song we all know, but is similar to Uncle Dave Macon`s song Ain`t It A Shame To Keep Your Honey Out In The Rain. I got Mine was also recorded by Fiddlin` John Carson and also Gid Tanner & Fate Norris.
BOTH songs are Minstrel Songs [note: this means there is language from the 1920's and 30's that was in very common usage at the time but would be considered inappropriate by today's standards.]

Here's the flipside. "I Got Mine"

Thank You ! :) (14.50 / 2)
This cracked me up when I found it in February of this year.  Grandpa was a shyster:

It appears that John McGhee not only performed and recorded but also acted as a scout for recording companies. According to one account, Mc Ghee would organise sessions for gospel groups, pay them a flat fee and have the royalties signed over to himself. It seems that twice a year, he would gather a group of artists, book their hotel accommodation and pay them perhaps ten dollars each.

Venerable music

It also cracked me up that some of the stuff is available on iTunes.  I never, ever expected to see that.

My Grandma and some of her sibs sang with Pa on some of his recordings.  So if you come acrossed anything with backup singers and it says Alma, that would be my grandma.

I don't think anyone ever mentioned him writing Will the Circle be Unbroken.  I sure do know the song though.

Please do make share any you find with us.  You've really made my butt light up today.  :)

will the circle... (14.00 / 2)
is one of the songs that is always played at our hooleys....
it's very cool to find out your Pa wrote some verses!

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

I think its (15.00 / 2)
pretty cool too.

If anyone ever mentioned it to me it must have been when I was real little.  I'll have to see if my mom knows it, and if she doesn't I'll have to try emailing my dads cousin.  He's the only one of the older generation left.  Me and 2 of my siblings corresponded with him for awhile by email but he wouldn't quit sending republic political crap and one by one he wrote us off when we asked him to stick with non political stuff.

[ Parent ]
I did find mention of Alma (13.00 / 2)
...as a "side performer" on one of the songs mentioned on one of the sites I visited!

Also, I had to laugh along with you about the info about him paying performers to record and then getting the royalties for himself. Perhaps he is the "Father of Modern Record Labels", too!

On "Circle"...

Carter Family Lyrics and Song Details- Letter C

We'll look at  the Carters songs titled with the letter C:....

Can the Circle Be Unbroken (Bye and Bye); Based on the gospel song: Will the Circle be Unbroken Words: Ada Habershon, Music: Charles Gabriel. Date: 1907.

WILL THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN Words: Ada Habershon, Music: Charles Gabriel. Date: 1907. (First Verse and Chorus only)

There are loved ones in the glory,
Whose dear forms you often miss;
When you close your earthly story,
Will you join them in their bliss?

CHORUS: Will the circle be unbroken
By and by, by and by?
In a better home awaiting
In the sky, in the sky?

Clearly this is the same song the Carters used and made famous. The real question is: Did the Carters rewrite the verses or get them from other sources as well? The Carters 1935 recording was preceeded by the 1930 recording by Frank Welling & John McGhee. Their version most likely is based on this early recording.

Certainly this song is now accepted as traditional and is published everywhere. The Carter's famous version begins:

I was standing by my window,
On a cold and cloudy day.
When I saw a hearst come rolling,
For to carry my mother away.

CAN THE CIRCLE BE UNBROKEN- Carter Family

CHORUS:  Can the circle be unbroken,
Bye and bye, Lord, bye and bye?
               There's a better home a-waiting
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.

I was standing by the window
On one cold and cloudy day;
And I saw the hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away.

Lord, I told the undertaker,
"Undertaker, please drive slow;
For this body you are hauling,
Lord, I hate to see her go"

I followed close behind her,
tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave.

Went back home, Lord, my home was lonesome
Since my mother, she was gone;
All my brothers, sisters crying
What a home so sad and lone.
