Happy Labor Day to you & all (15.00 / 4)
the other fireflies too!

Miki might have liked what I just heard on WRTI's jazz stream: a Leonard Bernstein medley (including "Maria") done by a Big Band.  DJ seems to be on a Big Band theme right now...very fun.  The current one sounds more 1930s-40s, though.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

Yes they are definitely (15.00 / 3)
going Big Band sound tonight.  And IIRC, this DJ usually gets off work shortly after I get home.  WOW!  So glad she's working late (like me, tonight):  right now it's Satchmo & Danny Kaye singing about the blues.  (Hint:  Satchmo is better.)  Great song, though.

gha! (3.00 / 4)
I know exactly how you're feeling - and nothing seems to be working. but since even laying down isn't helping, I'm gonna gulp down another pot of coffee, a few more aspirins, and see if that helps.

we had a pretty bad rain overnight, and Dreamer and Ana decided to express their inner piggies this morning and joyfully roll in the mud, so I've got some serious baths to give! and unless my head stops pounding I'm pretty sure I won't be taking Dolores for a long ride this afternoon, even though that's what I really wanted to do  :o(

Ha! I'd love to do a Christmas bird count (10.00 / 3)
sometime...except, it's cold out there at Christmas.

Alma, are you into birdwatching at all?  Or for that matter, is anybody else here?  My question is, I've been walking home from work for two years now & this is the first time I've heard birds chirping (not singing, but definitely chirping) at approx. 1 a.m.  Saturday night & last night, too.  Also, the droppings under the trees are much smaller than our usual pigeons leave.

It's night, it's late, I just want to get home, so I haven't tried to actually LOOK for the birds.  Plus the trees still have leaves on them: I'd be lucky to identify a pigeon at that hour.

But does anyone have any idea what kind of birds these might be?  I'm on the Eastern Flyway, if that helps.

I'm a fledgling birdwatcher, heh :) (14.00 / 4)
I have been at it for a few years, but I'm not really any sort of expert. I can't think of exactly who might be chirping after midnight, but I have also experienced the phenomenon, so I'll give it some more thought and see what I can come up with.

The major deficiency I have found in the on-line birding sites and the bird ID books is that they are often short on descriptions of behavior patterns in certain species. So, even though behaviors can be important to distinguishing species, I have had to ID the species and then watch the behaviors to figure out what is what. Once you get a feel for a certain species' behaviors, then you can ID them much more quickly and with a less good view of them.

Also, the recordings of bird calls that are available online can be very helpful, but they are in no way comprehensive of the different calls that a species may use, they usually just have the most common song or call online. This year while carefully watching our neighborhood Mississippi Kites, I heard calls that were not available anywhere online. They have a call that seems to function as a sort of echo-locator between a mated pair. I heard it most at the beginning of the mating and nesting season when the female would sit in a treetop and wait to be fed by the male. As he approached with food, she would make this call so he would easily find her in whatever treetop she had chosen to wait for him. They also have a call that it is just a repeated first note of the two note call you can hear online. I never did determine exactly what that meant, but it seemed to be an alert that there was food or predator nearby, perhaps? Anyway, it was really cute and neat to watch the courtship and mating and then two months later see the fledgling learning to fly...

But that doesn't help us with the current question... Like I said, I'll think on it and see what else I can come up with.

Although info on exotic birds is mostly where my bird knowledge lies, I do know that (13.75 / 4)
many, if not most northern American birds will begin flying south fairly soon.  However, there are certain birds, such as chickadees and robins that tend to stick around and not fly south for the winter.  Pigeons, I don't know about, because I don't see as many of them in the winter, if at all, that I do right now. Hope I've been of some help here.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

i'll link to this (13.33 / 3)

There's countless thousands of them in the air. It's just amazing.

Hey, who knew? (14.67 / 3)
Certainly not I.

Christina Aguilera does Big Band sound:

Heard it for the first time this afternoon, as I was watching the Phillies lose to the Marlins, 7-1.  Someone played it on the jukebox.  Listen to that brass section!  And her voice is more than a bit brassy too, lol.

Of course I've heard of her... (12.33 / 3)
Just like I've heard of Christina Aguilera.

What blew me away in the latter's case, besides her voice, was her band.  I adore the Big Band sound, and didn't expect a contemporary popular singer to be using one to back her up.  So when I heard the song at my friend's pub, I had to check the jukebox to see what was playing.

Now, I think, I need to really speak with the woman who played it.  She and I clearly have similar taste in music: not just b/c of that one song, but b/c of the whole set she played.

or maybe these covers of old standards (15.00 / 3)
of hers would suit better?
