Firefly Memories 1.0: A call for action

As we approach our first blogoversary I thought it might be fun to look back at some of our first year posts that exemplify our firefly dreaming spirit and mission.  Original post with comments can be found here: A call for action by Kathleen

Food, Inc. Pictures, Images and Photos

One of my favorite things about the Oscar nominations is the new list of documentaries to see, on this list this year is Food INC.

Watching Oprah interview Michael Pollan, http://www.michaelpollan.com/ the other day talking about the Oscar nominated documentary Food INC. which he narrated, I was so intrigued I ordered the movie and watched it today.

For the sake of you and your families health, for the sake of the health of the planet, for the sake of the soul of the human race please I beg you to watch this documentary. You can get it through amazon for 10 bucks here: http://www.amazon.com/Food-Inc...

It is priceless in terms of what you get and you can pass it on to everyone you know.  Yes it is that important!

You know how you get little snippets of what is going on and you think you know but this documentary pulls it all together starting with the seed all the way to the plate and the grave.

It is gripping and had me shaking just like you do when you are cold.  I kid you not this film of where we are is like a cold splash of reality.  The bottom line message is we vote for this every time we buy something to eat.  If everyone saw this movie and we changed our buying habits the change would be powerful and swift.

Enough about the movie you just have to see it and get back to me.

More about this amazing man Michael Pollan after the jump....... talk about heroes this guy is way up there on the list!

Alma :: Firefly Memories 1.0: A call for action
Michael Pollan wrote this simple little book, a man after my heart because I feel the best things said are said in a simple way called,Food Rules.

http://themoderatevoice.com/58...

In Food Rules he list 64 rules of food wisdom.
Pollan says everything he's learned about food and health can be summed up in seven words: "Eat food, not too much, mostly plants."

Probably the first two words are most important. "Eat food" means to eat real food -- vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and, yes, fish and meat -- and to avoid what Pollan calls "edible food-like substances."

Rule 2 of his book, "Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food."

You can find Michael Pollan everywhere.... are we listening?

This is a simple basic revolution to take back our lives and control over our on bodies! We have been used for other's gain for far too long and it is killing us literally!  Lets vote every time we buy food to no longer support the corporations that are killing us for their gain.

Let's support those that are doing it right!

This is a revolution for life!!!

Tips for Kathleens (14.00 / 8)
fabulous posts.

Its been especially hard to narrow her posts down to just a few for this series.

Hey, Alma? (14.20 / 5)
I love what you're doing here.  Really, it's wonderful.

But you've titled everything 1.0 & it gets confusing:  Have I read that? especially when one is on the home page & going, Oh, that's Alma's 1.0.  I already read that.

Any chance of changing the titles to 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.0.3, etc?

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

Didn't you notice (12.75 / 4)
I had added the title to todays?

Your reasonings are just why I did that.  LOL

was and is a great piece ty Alma for posting it again for us.... (12.67 / 6)

Good choice, Alma (12.20 / 5)
I remember this one. I watched the movie because of it.

There's so much (11.40 / 5)
we could do to not only be healthier ourselves but to help make the world healthier and more humane.  I think Food Inc. is a great starting point.  I am so glad Kathleen wrote about it.

I saw the movie "Food, Inc.", because I was curious. What an interesting movie. (11.50 / 4)
While the message of the movie Food Inc. is to be appreciated,  there's unfortunately a downside to it;  It's all very well to advise people to eat organic foods, including meat and poultry, but, unfortunately, many people, in fact the vast majority of people really can't afford organic foods.  While there are clearly movements underfoot to commence the growth and preparation of organic foods,  it'll be a long time before these movements really produce discernible and sustaining results.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I agree with you Miki (13.50 / 4)
we have a long way to go.  Change starts with information, I saw Food Inc. as one step in the right direction.

Me too (13.50 / 4)
A starting point for us to work from.

Thanks, Kathleen. (13.00 / 2)
You've made a very good point.  Informing and educating the public is the first big step in the right direction.  Although the movie  Food, Inc. was very informative, none of what they showed surprised me, however.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

i think part of this movement (13.67 / 3)
is just to get people thinking again... about where their food comes from.

since the movie came out there has been a surge in "guerrilla gardening"...where people are taking over empty lots in the city or using the space between sidewalk & road and growing vegetables. neighbors/neighborhoods are working together to produce food.....

also people are getting rid of lawns, planting gardens instead as a way around the cost.

i know not everyone is suited to growing vegetables, but there are Community Sustainable Agriculture Farms in almost every area now, buying a share (or a half-share) gets you locally grown organic vegetables for a fraction of the cost of organic at the grocery. AND you'll be helping local people, not having your food shipped hundreds (if not thousands) of miles meait gets to you fresher, will make it last much longer in your fridge too.

And there are also Farmers Markets that promote local food growers.
I find if I go to the Farmers Market in the last hour or two that they are open, I get much better prices than first thing in the morning.

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
There's a farmer's market near where I live that's Open from April through October. (13.00 / 2)
I occasionally buy there, but there's also a Farmer's Market in Harvard Yard that's even better, that's open during the warm weather every Tuesday, where there's al kinds of neat stuff! Mmmmm!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
