RiaD :: Urban Vertical Farming
I was talking to pinche tejano last summer about this Urban Vertical Farming, then i saw & bookmarked this cool article at Treehugger:
"The Vertical Farm" the movie by Sting

Since 1989, Sting has been involved in protecting the Amazon through the Rainforest Foundation which he co-founded with his wife Trudie Styler and last month played a benefit concert for the organization. He's been involved in other environmental causes like supporting sustainable food, and now he's putting a camera where his mouth is. The performer is producing a film about vertical farming, according to the Deadline blog, starting with documenting the first one to be planted in the U.S.

Sting and his partner in the project, manager Kathryn Shenker, have purchased the film rights to The Vertical Farm: Feeding Ourselves and the World in the 21st Century. The book by the concept's proponent Dr. Dickson Despommier, a Columbia University professor, will be released in October by Thomas Dunne Books/St. Martin's Press.

To make room for nature, farms of the future may have to move off the land and into skyscrapers. Dickson Despommier explains his idea.

here is a "concept" video...
what Urban Vertical Farming could be

these people are taking it one step farther....

the system above makes good sense to me. using everything you possibly can to it's best advantage.

i'm not sure i'm real keen on the hydroponics though.
i feel that is much akin to trying to take vitamins in place of eating real food.
there are things in there that scientists still don't understand... not only what they are but how they work together.
i just think growing seeds in dirt will produce healthier, more nutritious... better! food.
(but i may be wrong)

Thanks Ria (15.00 / 2)
I had run across a little on this type of farming when I was searching for stuff on container and enabled gardening, but I don't remember if what I found was actually called Urban Verticle Farming.

While I grow the piggys wheat grass in water on newspapers I agree that it would be better grown in dirt.  Maybe its just my conditions but it would last and grow for much longer if it was in dirt.  With the water method after a week or so I start getting a fuzzy mold growth that I wouldn't get if I was growing it in dirt.  But Katie wants it grown without dirt so thats how I do it.

Never heard of vertical farming (15.00 / 1)
but the concept makes sense.  Some people who are lucky enough to have terraces/rooftops in Manhattan have gardens there: from the street it mostly looked like flowers & such but I'm sure there are some rooftop tomatoes, etc.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
