Friday Open Thoughts: The bus comes to Broadway

by: slksfca

The bus is Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and she comes to the legendary Palace Theater on Monday, in a musical adaptation of the cult film from 1994, about three friends - two drag queens and a transwoman - on a road trip through the Australian outback.

An iconic moment.
slksfca :: Friday Open Thoughts: The bus comes to Broadway
In some ways a throwback to certain movies of the '60s and '70s, the original Priscilla was a raucous and surprisingly touching celebration of nonconformity, friendship and family, set to a string of disco hits. It starred Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, Lord of the Rings), Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential, The King's Speech), and the fabulous Terence Stamp. You can see the movie trailer here.

Priscilla the musical has already played successful runs in Sydney, Auckland, London and Toronto. This is a sneak peek at Broadway's version:

Looks like fun, doesn't it?

Welcome to Friday Open.

You're an angel. :-)

As it turns out, I'm one of those people for whom "real" life has been, shall we say, an inconvenience recently. Thanks for the kind word, though!

I saw a story in the NYT (15.00 / 2)
about Priscilla going to the Bway stage.  Too cool!  Of course, I never saw the movie & I'll never see the play unless a Bway angel takes me & pays for it (not bloody likely) but...it really sounds great.

When does it open?  The Times usually runs their review the day after opening night...and I may be poor but I can still read about the theater.

Now I'm off to watch the clip.

O, the spectacle! (11.00 / 2)
It looks like the kind of Bway musical I'd love, Scott.

"I Will Survive" has long been one of my favorite disco tunes.  A friend invited me to her company's Christmas party, set on a boat that circled Manhattan.  The band played that number twice (once after dinner & once when we were close to docking) and both times the small dance floor belowdecks was filled to overflowing with middle-aged people having fun gyrating to a terrific song (that we can all identify with).

And "It's Raining Men, Hallelujah!" -- well, all I can say is, I used to frequent this little lesbian bar in the West Village.  The dance floor was approximately the size of a postage stamp.  But on Friday nights, when the DJ played that song, all the women were dancing enthusiastically...on the (postage stamp) dance floor and beyond.  God forbid you needed to cross the room to get to the bathroom during that number!

although this fun feature seems to take up an inordinate amount of space....

I talked to her this afternoon (13.00 / 2)
She sounds very good. I did make the mistake of causing her to laugh, which probably wasn't such a good thing (and then we laughed about that). :-)

i'd love (15.00 / 2)
to hear her voice.....
i usually don't even think about such, but as soon as i was pulled into her orbit i've wanted to hear her.
alas, i don't do phone much anymore.
get out of breath from talking too much.

Wow, Ria, I'm sorry (15.00 / 2)
I know your health isn't good, but that really sux.  Can you get Medicaid?  I mean...you're disabled, MrD isn't working...seems like you are exactly who Medicaid is intended to help.  You could apply for disability, too -- you'd probably have to, in fact -- and the check might be tiny, but it would be a check.

I just got a letter from Social Security telling me what I would get per month, plus what I'm entitled to if I'm disabled.  Guess what?  Disability would pay me right now more than I'm currently earning!  Of course, the longer I keep working (and the better the pay), the more I will get.  Sore shoulders & elbow be damned: I will keep working to UP that figure.  As long as we can keep the GOP out of power....

I'm not old enough to retire anyway...but on my days off, watching TV at my friend's pub, I see LOTS of commercials for lawyers (or maybe one legal group that runs LOTS of daytime commercials) who say you should call them if you've been denied disability.  They are the modern equivalent of ambulance-chasers...but hey, ambulance-chasers have to win cases or they're out of business, right?  There must be a similar law practice in your region.  Can't hurt to call, right?  I know you don't have TV, but I bet either your son or daughter does.

Forgot to mention: (9.00 / 2)
Most of the modern ambulance chaser ads I see mention "free consultation" so it shouldn't cost anything to TALK to them (once).  The ad for the "Have You Been Denied Disability?" group says that, iirc.  Beyond the free consultation, though, I would be very careful about negotiating the fee.
