Tuesday Open Thoughts

Michael Bloomberg is the latest billionaire to accept the challenge posed by Bill Gates to give away half his wealth to charity.  It's not a substitute for a sane tax policy in this country, but it's something.

puzzled :: Tuesday Open Thoughts
This article tells the story of an ordinary family who decided to give away half their possessions to help needy people.  Although their idea is pretty radical, and few of us could, or would, consider such a bold move, their smaller suggestions warrant consideration:

Since that moment, the more we've examined this abundant life the more we realize that everyone has more than enough of something. Spend 6 hours a week on Facebook? Cut it in half and now you have a new 3-hour resource to sing in a nursing home or clean a neighborhood park. Eat out four times a week? Cut that in half and share what you save with the local soup kitchen. (While you're at it, stop by and serve a meal.) A life of abundance, not scarcity.

It's not just about the money.  It's about the joy we get and give with the resources available to us.

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

Last night, I saw a documentary called "There But For Fortune" at the Coolidge Corner Theatre. (15.00 / 3)
There But For Fortune is a documentary about Phil Ochs, another famous folksinger who wrote songs like "I Ain't Marchin' Anymore", "Ballad of Lou Marsh", "There But For Fortune", and "A Small Circle of Friends", in addition to a number of other anti-war songs and folk songs.  It started with him growing up, his family, him writing lots of songs, and, generally,  his idealism and youth, and his stints in NYC and California.  However, after a time, things began to change;  Phil Ochs began to look more inward, he became a relentless alcoholic,  then schizophrenic and out of control.  His songs took on a more melancholic, darker tone, intimating suicide, and Phil Ochs did eventually commit suicide, at the age of 35, in the mid 1970's.  A sad ending of his life, indeed.

It makes me wonder what would've become of so many other idealists here in the United States (i. e. MLK, RFK, Rachel Corrie, and many others) if they had lived.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
