Friday Open Thoughts: Topsy-Turvy

Giuseppe Arcimboldo
Reversible Head with Basket of Fruit, circa 1590
slksfca :: Friday Open Thoughts: Topsy-Turvy
A "topsy-turvy" is

...an artistic invention possibly originating in the sixteenth century. Topsy-turvies are most typically associated with the whimsical, and they readily found an audience in the composite portraits of Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526-1593).? Using all manner of flora and fauna in a fantastically original style, Arcimboldo's paintings were hugely popular for their humor and irony; his portraits are sometimes based on real individuals, suggestive of their professions, such as The Jurist and The Librarian. Three upside down portraits have been attributed to Arcimboldo: The Cook, The Vegetable Gardener, and Reversible Head with Basket of Fruit.

Gorgeous, Scott (14.80 / 5)
Cold but sunny here: highs in the mid-40s today & tomorrow.  After last week's 70-degree weather, it's a real drag.

New guy quit yesterday.  There were going to be three (!!!!) of us closing tonight...now we're down to the usual two.  On a Friday.  My worst day of the week.  Oh well.

Wishing everyone else a terrific weekend.

We've got the same sort of cold weather here too, Youff. (15.25 / 4)
There was supposed to be a pre-ladybird clean-up and neighborhood patrol tomorrow, but, since it's supposed to be unseasonably cold over the weekend, it's been postponed and rescheduled until April 9th, when it's somewhat warmer.

Sorry to hear that the new guy at work quit yesterday.  Friday sounds like a pretty rough night for you overall, especially tonight.

Have a good weekend yourself, Youff.  Take care.

Thanks, Miki (13.75 / 4)
It wasn't TOO bad at work tonight b/c my coworker (although only 18) has been there for a couple of years.  IIRC, it's only the second time he's closed on a Friday, but at least he knows how to haul ass when he has to, LOL!  Having 3 closers would definitely have been better.  (But closing with one of the n00bs w/out him there would have been infinitely worse, if you know what I mean.)

Hahaha:  And our delivery of sandwiches/donuts, formerly received around 6 p.m. or so, has been pushed back by a route change to somewhere between ten p.m. and midnight.  Exactly when we're trying to do about 20 other different things so we can get the hell out of Dodge.  Now: one more late-night thing.

Well.  Sandwiches didn't show up at 10:30...or 11...or 11:30.  I told a customer, "If they're not here by 11:45, they're not going out tonight," and meant it.  They showed up at 11:55.  The driver then had approx. four minutes to make his next delivery, to our sister store, only about a 15-min. walk away...but with traffic lights & stop signs between us & them.  They close at midnight, too.  I am hoping our respective managers (and their District Manager) raise bloody hell with the sandwich higher-ups & get us back on an earlier delivery schedule.

Meanwhile: NO, I did not stay the extra time to get the sandwiches and donuts out.  I left a note for Da Boss explaining why.  He can check the videotapes and watch as the stuff is delivered precisely 5 minutes before closing if he feels the need to confirm the timing.

I mean, there are limits.  If the driver had been 5 minutes later, we would have been closed, and would have refused delivery altogether.  And if I got in trouble for that, oh, well.  NOBODY comes in once that door is locked, unless it is my boss.  NOBODY.

You're welcome, Youff. (15.00 / 1)
Being short-staffed, even if by only one person, can be tough, especially when it comes to customer service.   The Sandwich and Donut delivery people  really screwed up royally, and, if your manager is on top of things, some heads will be sure to roll, and rightly so.  I, for one, hope that happens.  When somebody falls down on the job, it has a domino affect;  it affects everybody else adversely.  That sandwich and donut delivery company will have a lot to answer for, because this sort of sloppiness reflects badly on them, not you guys.  On the other hand, however, finding out exactly what happened to cause this kind of unprecedented delay in delivery might be the better part of valor before giving the higher-ups in the sandwich and donut company the "what-for".

I'm glad things turned out OK, Youff.   Barring a dire emergency (family crisis, fire, etc.), there really was no excuse for the driver showing up five minutes before closing time.

Good luck, Youff.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

QUILT DIARY (12.25 / 4)
for Ben Masel still needs messages

From a non-poster on DailyKos to Ben Masel: (12.50 / 4)
Sorry to hear that you're ill, Ben. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
All the best of luck to you and your family, assuming you've got one.

Ria, how many messages does Sara (14.00 / 3)
typically need per quilt?  I know it's fifty-ish or so but am not really sure.  For Ben's quilt diary, there were about 100 or so comments when I saw it last night & I figured at least half were comment comments, not messages, so I left one...but if the comment thread is over 300, I usually figure Sara has more than she needs.

Any thoughts/advice?

& let you know

Sara says (15.00 / 1)
The minimum is 44 -- for one of the little checkerboard quilts.  But I will take as many as are given and fit them into a quilt somehow.  Those messages are medicine -- and the more, the better.  Please let Youff know that late messages are okay, too -- don't be shy about leaving them.

a "little checkerboard quilt" is a lap quilt- prolly 3ft X 4ft or so.
i think she said at some point that 72 messages were needed for a twin size quilt- big enough to wrap up in.

i have asked her several times about not being able to pay for my messages & she assures me every time that there are always people who pay extra to make up for those who can't, & encourages me to continue posting my message in every quilt diary.

so please, you do too!
