I live in Washington State and I love mountains.  We have beautiful mountains, the Cascades to the east and the Olympics to the west.  I live in the foothills of the Cascades, if you hop on I-90 from my house and drive east it takes less than a couple of hours and you are on the other side of the mountains!

The Cascade Range run north and south the full length of the state with it's star Mt. Rainier at 13,000 feet, that floats above all the rest.
Photobucket

Mt St. Helens who blew it's top in 1980 reducing the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 feet to 8,365 feet and replacing it with a 1 mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater. A lesson to all of us who feel like blowing our tops, sometimes it comes with a price, but shit sometimes it is the only way to release that pressure!  LOL
Photobucket

The Olympic Mts. to the west are so dense there are no road through the mountains you can only drive around them.
Photobucket

The reason I am writing about mountains is because this is where I go to escape when I can.  When I feel like pulling the covers over my head, feeling lost, I would escape to the mountains to reground and renew spirit.

So lets take a hike below the fold........

Kathleen :: Escape
Photobucket

Can you feel this?  There is an energy in the mountains that for me is unmatched.  The air is so charged that at times I feel like I am floating.

My all time favorite mountains are the Canadian Rockies, so vast and wide open that you feel like an eagle even though you are still touching the ground. Towering granite rock jutting up from wide open valleys. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!......
Photobucket

Lakes from melting glaciers that are not only crystal clear but turquoise in color!
Photobucket

Lately life has been overwhelming and escape is not easy to do these days but I can steal a few moment here and there to sit on the end of the dock.......... leaving me wondering....
Taken this morning after a cup of timbuk3's coffee (YUM!) on the dock.....
Photobucket

Where do you go to renew the spirit and to sit in that place of wonder?

Where is your all-time favorite place, even if it is the back yard tell me about it? Share pics if you can!

What's for dinner?

escape... (8.00 / 9)
into this beautiful essay, and a shared love of the mountains, Kathleen!

the only escape I can afford the time to make is to my back porch... and I don't know what I'd do without it...

well... (8.00 / 7)
the warm weather is kinda a plus! but I love this island so much. Juan suffered so much in the states - I can't even begin to tell you how many times he was called an 'illegal wet back' in TN.

still, I can't help but love the snow caps - how can a mountain really be a mountain without them! here's one of my favorites, Mt Fuji. someday I'll try to recover all my pics from my trips to Japan - hate dead hard drives!

You and Kathleen live in SUCH gorgeous places! Mine seems so... hillbilly by comparison. But I've lived in the Rockies (Sangre de Christos). Breathtakingly beautiful, not very friendly. PR looks positively lush, though I really can't stand heat. I guess we've all got good taste in environments! I guess I've always thought that way, being someone who moved around a whole lot as a kid and young adult. Live in Florida? Gotta live on the beach. Live in Virginia? Live in the valley. Mountains in New Mexico (off the high mesa), in Monterey where you can see the cliffs or in the redwoods...

People seem much the same everywhere I've ever been. And I've been some places - wasn't even born in this country! (Olongapo, Luzon - Philippines). I am so delighted to see that we're 'holding' some of the most special places right here on Firefly!!!!

Hi Kathleen, (8.00 / 8)
simply wonderful diary.

Y'know, when I was growing up there was (and is) a reservoir on the border of Trumbull and Easton in Connecticut.  The lake is about 3 miles long and half a mile wide and has exactly two houses on it, both for rangers.  When I was small Karmafish, me and my buddies would go down there to fish.  The place was just gorgeous and because the lake was off-limits the fishing was absolutely terrific.  Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, East Chain Pickerels, and native brook trout in the stream feeding the mouth.

That spot will always remain for me a deeply special place.  I very much hope to return one day and sit by the mouth and think about all the changes that have taken place in my life since I used to fish there.

When the ranger arrives to boot me out of the area, and gives me a ticket, I will not argue or, as we used to, run away.

I'll just smile and thank him for helping to keep the Easton Reservoir pristine.

{btw, the rangers used to chase us all the time.  That was half the fun!  And they could never catch us because how does a full grown man catch a 14 year old boy in the woods near his home?  We knew every tree and path... the rangers never stood a chance!}

:O)

Awesome memories karma!!! (8.00 / 8)
I hope you make it back sooner than later and catch a big one, maybe the same rangers are there and remember you!!  Wouldn't that be a hoot!!

Growing up in Lincoln, MA, an idyllic town roughly 20 miles northwest of Boston, (8.00 / 7)
my sister and I and/or friends would escape by going down to this meadow and walking around.  There was a great deal of swamp down there, but we paid it no mind.  sometimes, We'd look for turtles, etc., and we'd occasionally find a frog or a tadpole around.  In the summertime, we'd hear the chug-a-rum noises of the frogs, too, especially at night.
Then, there was the common land, way down at the end of the street from us, which was really a small playground with a jungle-gym and a slide on it, which was kind of cool also.  Just simply walking in the woods, or going on a bikeride was cool.  Bicycling and exotic birds and West Side Story are three interests that I've had since childhood, and, need I add that I've held onto them since?!?  hehe.

Then there was a rock known as Balancing Rock, which the kids in the neighborhood, including ourselves, would climb up on and amuse ourselves.  There were other people's backyards to play in, and no body minded, either, in those days.

Swimming at Lake Cochichuate, Walden Pond, and later, Valley Pond, which was a man-made pond that straddled the Lincoln/Weston border were also ways of escaping.

Nowadays, there's lots of ways that I make escapes, although I never think of them that way.  I drive out to Concord Center on good weather weekends with my touring bike and ride around for an hour or two, strap my bike back onto the car's bike rack, and then head home.  Even here in the city, just simply going on long walks, is a form of escape, if one wants to call it that, because it gives me a break and exercise.  Bicycle riding here in town for various errands and appointments, (which is why I also have a mountain bike), is also a form of exercise, although it can get a bit hairy at times.  However, if I find that drivers are getting really uptight, I'll pull over, wait for a break in the traffic, and then resume riding.  I wear my helmet at all times, whether I ride out in the country or here in the city, because it's important to protect one's head in case of a fall.

Here's another thing:  Many people scoff at the idea of wearing a helmet, and they think that that's only for children under 12, but, in reality, many older kids and adults, too, have not worn helmets while bicycling, taken really bad falls, and have either died, or have been permanently incapacitated for life in some way or other, either mentally and/or physically!  Not good, imho.  Frankly, I think that the people who scoff at that are either ignorant and short sighted, or willfully ignorant and mean-spirited, but that's my take on it.  I'll still wear my helmet, and to hell with what others think.

Dinner last night was a huge plate of seafood and vegetable tempura, at a fancy Japanese Restaurant, called Fugakura, right on Brookline's Beacon street, two blocks from the Coolidge Corner Theatre, where we took my mom for her birthday!  Excellent food, but, some of us were stuffed and couldn't finish our tempura!  It was worth it, though.

Dinner tonight for me will be chili con carne with arborio rice, and milk.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

beautiful picture you painted for us, Miki (8.00 / 7)
thank you! and keep right on wearing that helmet!! we're pretty close to the old olympic village used for the panamerican games, and it's still used for training. so many of the athletes ride their bikes here on our winding, steep roads and every last one of them wears their helmets. I can't think of a time ever seeing any of 'em without them - and they pass by the house pretty regularly. so many unnecessary serious injuries because some riders just won't wear their helmets, it's heartbreaking.

Oh Miki (8.00 / 7)
I love hearing about your childhood and your bike rides.

You picked up on a interesting point that made me chuckle, the word escape.  I guess I should have said where do you go to feel close to nature or where do you go to renew your spirit or where is your favorite getaway.  Escape wasn't really the best word because I head for the hills when ever I can and actually live close so it is possible often.  Maybe the word escape was fitting for me right now because it is hard for me to get out without arranging for someone to come in that can care for my mom.  It is interesting to me that you picked up that it would not be your choice of word but you still knew what I meant. :o)

Dinner sounds wonderful!

I totally understand where you're coming from when you choose the word "escape".  It's no problem for me at all.

I love this diary and the pictures, as well as the picture of the cat looking so comfortable and contented, and beautiful, too.

...of the cat on the rail.

love that pic, too (8.00 / 5)
I've been trying to re-size it for Kathleen, so it doesn't bleed over onto the sidebar on the front page, but no luck 'cause of the gif - 'wondering' looses its' glitter, and we can't have that!

Kathleen, did you put this pic together? is there anyway that you can it get down to about 500 px wide? sure would appreciate it, kinda makes the front page kinda hard to read. if not, who cares? still love ya, and the pic is fantastic!

Sorry I was gone this morning, my husband works from home on Mondays so I had to run out to the dentist and get milk.

It has been stormin' here how is your weather?  How is Juan feeling today?  Any new babies?

sunny and breezy, here (8.00 / 5)
a few clouds floating around, but a beautiful day. sorry for the storms, hope they pass soon  :O(

juan's not doing well since his chemo last week, but we'll get through it. and we have 19 new baby bunnies, still awaiting a couple of litters, and Dolores still hasn't foaled yet.

and if you see anyone showing up here from PR with a weird ip address, that's just me trying to log on from my phone while waiting for J at the hospital. finally was able to log on, but haven't gotten past just rec'ing comments, 'cause it's too frustrating trying to type on this new phone. my old phone died, so I took advantage of the free blackberry offer (had to sign a new contract, but what the hell), but my fingers are too damn big and it's driving me nuts.

Oh, too many places to name... (8.00 / 4)
Different places for different moods.  Back in my high school years the freight tracks in random New Jersey towns were my 'clear my head' spot.  Carteret was an old favorite.  And the lines in Weequahic that fed into Newark's Oak Island yard.  Heh, I used to want to jump on one of them occasionally just to see where they went but they close box cars now.  And besides, they probably just went to like Bound Brook or something.  Which would have sucked to be stranded in.

Used to even sleep on 'em sometimes when I needed to get away from home for a while.  Well, not on the Conrail tracks but in the little wooded areas or massive abandoned industrial facilities surrounding and adjacent to the tracks.  I'm sure you realized what I meant.

;-P

Hmmm.  Other places back there were The Shore of course, I preferred Asbury in the late 90's when it was totally abandoned and ghostly.  I doubt there was ever any place in the world (or at least the US) quite like Asbury Park in those days, nor will there ever be again.  You just had to have been there on an 80 degree July day to know the eerie contrast between the absolute, total desolation and the natural beauty of the beach.  And then the buildings.  From bustling city and world-famous beach resort to "Sarajevo-by-the-Sea".

Block after block after block of abandoned or burned-down buildings and rubble-filled fields, the emptiness of Cookman Ave, the Metropolitan Hotel, skeletons of half-built 14-story hotels and other highrises along the boardwalk, trees growing out of the roof of the Palace Amusements building, a retro-futuristic 1950's era Howard Johnson's restaurant on the boardwalk that was always empty but amazingly enough stayed open until just a few years ago.  And to top it all off Tillie's eyes may or may not have followed you when you walked around in those days...

The Pine Barrens was another place I liked to get away to when I had the chance (and when I had a car).  I'd drive all the way down the Parkway to 70, take it west and just pull over about halfway to Marlton.  There was a little tavern (always closed) that I'd hide the car behind at like 3 AM and just sit in the quiet, pitch-black woods until the sun came up.

Oh, now I'm getting all nostalgic!

These days, ummm, I like walking the Springwater Trail out in the 120's where not too many people roam except for on warm sunny days.  And Powell Butte (best views of the mountains anywhere in the City of Portland on a clear day!  Mount Hood is like rightthere!  You can also see St. Helens, Adams, Jefferson and Rainier from up there...), especially the quiet wooded section on the south side near the Springwater Trail.  And sometimes, believe it or not, I can even "get away" just by wandering around Downtown on a busy weekday.  I pick up moods from others...

My all-time favorite place (and time)?

Probably Asbury Park, 1998-ish.  I never took any pictures, and now that exists of it lies in my memory and of anyone else who was there.  I'm ecstatic that Asbury Park is finally coming back these days, yet at the same time I kick myself constantly for not having taken any pictures back then.  Here's a few good ones, though, to give you an idea.

Dinner?

Oh hell, I can't remember what I had yesterday, lol.

Tonight, I think I'm gonna do a carbonara-ish spaghetti thing.
