Possible predictions for what could happen to the United States in the Future:

In the wake of the decimation of Roe v. Wade, the reversal of the 53-year old Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the increasing deregulation of the airlines, as well as the beginning of the deregulation of insurance companies, and the worsening of situations abroad, most notably the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,, as well as the collapse of bridges and the underfunding or non-funding of necessary government programs, not to mention the deployment of much, if not most of our man/woman power to Iraq in an unnecessary, immoral and illegal war,  along wit h the constant throwing away of good money after bad at our disastrous Iraq war,   I predict  at least two possibilities for the United States' future:

mplo :: Possible predictions for what could happen to the United States in the Future:
Future A)  As the body counts in Iraq and Afghanistan on both sides (i. el. Iraqi and American alike) continue to increase,  there will be an incredible backlash because average American citizens will not accept anymore of what this administration is doing, and our administration will be forced to capitulate, because  American citizens will no longer tolerate losing their own sons/daughters to wars that never, ever should've been waged in the first place.  The downside of this kind of backlash, however, is that police and other law enforcement people will take tougher measures against people who participate in the backlash, with more beatings and jaiings than there are right now,  elections would be monitored to make sure that they're not rigged like the last two presidential elections were, and  people would be elect ed to office who would live up to their obligations to the "a government for and by the people" credo and be held accountable by the public for what they do or don't do.  As good money continues to be thrown after bad at our war on Iraq, people will rise up and say...No more, and there'll be a forced withdrawal of our troops from Iraq, whether this leadership likes it or not.

The necessary 2-state solution that would definitely would be best for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be implemented by forcing Israel to cede West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem to the Palestinians, and Israel and the Palestinians will live in uneasy peace alongside each other in two separate states--Israel, the Jewish-majority nation-state, and Palestine, the Palestinian Arab majority  sovereign nation-state alongside Israel.  The way it should be.

There would be a full peace in Ireland, which would unite  the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland into one state, enabling Catholics and Protestants to live together.

Urban ghettoes would be dismantled, resulting in racially, ethnically and socioeconomically integrated neighborhoods with improved schools for all, and no necessity to implement such divisive policies such as mandated school busing, which, in many instances, was a disaster, and has made many people more angry, suspicious and fearful of one another.

As more bridges collapse, more and more American citizens will be writing, protesting and calling their state reps, congressmen/women, and senators to provide funds to repair  bridges, roads, levees, and railroad tracks.  Public transportation in the cities would also have to be improved, and admissions standards on cars be even stricter, and the making of many more smaller cars would have to be continued..

A cap would be put on auto insurance and healthcare insurance premiums for all insurance companies in the country, thus ensuring that people would not be gouged unnecessarily, nor   would they be denied adequate healthcare due to short staffing and overcrowding of hospitals or unavailability of equipment.  More medical research would be done also, to help promote cures for various ailments such as Parkinsons, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, etc.  Vaccines against AIDS, Strep, Tuberculosis, and many other communicable diseases would be made available,a s would vaccines against various types of cancers.  Foods would be raised naturally, without chemicals and/or antibiotics, to make for healthier eating, and food co-ops would become more widespread in communities so that food would not be overpriced.  Corporations would have to adhere to strict anti-pollution standards.

Due to the diversity of the United States' population, there'd still be racial, religious and ethnic tensions, but there would be a much better ability and willingness to keep extremists and instigators in line, thus reducing existing tensions to a minimum,  and people would not have to risk limb and life walking or driving through given neighborhoods and communities.  Banks and real estate agents would have to comply with stiff anti-housing discrimination laws, and allow people to move  wherever they felt like moving.  There'd still be a certain amount of crime, gang warfare, and the need to protect oneself while going out at night sometimes, but it wouldn't be nearly as intense, and people would not have to worry about the consequences of fighting back if attacked.

The National Endowment for the Arts would be refunded, and many more people would be able to attend the movies, plays, concerts, etc, of their choice, since there'd be many more available to choose from.  Various government programs, such as the WIC programs would  be refunded and re-instated, and civilian ownership of handguns, and assault rifles would be prohibited.  Firearms would be regulated, as would hunting guns, and the Second Amendment would be enforced correctly.

More affordable housing, especially in the cities, along with improved public transportation, police and fire protection, racially/socioeconomically/ethnically integrated neighborhoods would be the norm,as would better, more integrated city public schools for all public school students.  There would be movie theatres and other art venues in every neighborhood, and people would be able to attend the venues of their choice.

People who're being bullied for whatever reason, be it verbally or physically, would be encouraged to stand up for themselves, hence making the bullies realize that they continue that kind of behavior only  at their own detriment.

There would be more concentration on fixing up our own country, rather than dominating and destroying other countries, and cars would either run as hybrids, or totally electric..  Bridges, highways, subway systems, etc, would be monitored on an intermittent and regular basis and necessary maintenance and repairs would be performed as needed.  The same would be true of various public transportation systems and highways, etc. as needed.

Future B:  This is yet another possibility of what could happen to the United States and the world at large:  The Democratic Party at large would succeed in totally self-destructing, and there'd be more backlash in the streets, and a really hard-line Republican Administration would take over hence resulting in the dictatorship that they've always wanted.  More mindless and unnecessary wars, like Viet Nam, Iraq, not to mention countless others would be fought, hence resulting in the loss/compromising of many more lives on both sides--;i. e. American and adversary alike.  Less money would be available for necessary governmental services, infrastructure maintenance and repairs, healthcare and various welfare programs  here at home, resulting in the complete breakdown of government services and the entire United States infrastructure.

Various communities, such as urban areas, suburban areas and small towns alike would become ghettoized in order to become more self-sufficient.  Gang warfare, drugs, and crime, which have long been mainly urban problems, would become widespread and develop in suburban and small-town America as well.  Gangs would control many, if not most city neighborhoods, suburbs and small towns alike and rule by force, making travel by night particularly risky .  People , regardless of who they were and where they live, would become more fearful, and therefore more isolated from each other, preferring to stay home and watch high-tech , big screened televisions, and work straight from home, and/or choose to home-school their children,  rather than walk out of their houses for fear of becoming crime victims.  There would be little to no chance for people to develop any kind of trust, much less friendship with each other, especially because harsh security measures, such as the proposed Real ID solutions, which pose a real threat to privacy, would be implemented, as would searches and seizures of people's property and person, arousing people's hackles, and further pitting them against each other.  Lines would be extremely long while waiting to get on public transportation due to lengthy searching of everybody's person for supposed contraband.  People who look or act suspiciously in any way or form would be subject to extra scrutiny and possibly detained.  Divorce rates would go up, as well.

Race relations, never great here in the United States to begin with, would become even worse.  Race riots would break out regularly, not only between whites and non-whites, but between the various non-white groups as well,  making the historical racial strife in the South, as well as Boston's busing debacle back in the mid-1970's,  look like a picnic.   This overall situation would  be made even worse, as there would be many more non-white politicians who are cast in the mold of demagogic white politicians, both Southern and Northern alike.   Wars, both here and abroad, would break out.  Israel, correctly recognizing that keeping the Occupied Territories would put them in more danger, would ultimately cede them over to the Palestinians, pull their settlers out of those sections, and one of two things would occur:  Either Israel and the Arab world at large would reluctantly come to terms with each other's presence, OR, when Israel pulled out of the Occupied Territories, the following would result:
The Palestinians,  in their newly-formed  state would begin killing each other off at a rapid rate, hence being like Lebanon was in the 1980's, thus being in a constant, bloody civil war, or even resembling many of the urban ghettoes here at home in their implosion.  Or, Israel might well experience renewed terrorist attacks, as well as attacks by Arab countries, therefore having to fight back as hard it could to defend and protect itself from the onslaught.  Untold numbers on each side would be maimed/killed, and the UN Security Council, as well as t he United States, the European Union , the Vatican and the U N Security Council would have to enforce the necessary 2-state solution and regularly monitor the region to make sure that  hostilities don't break out. Or, war would be a regular way of life in the region and totally uncontrollable.
.
The same thing might well happen in Ireland, with the fighting spreading to the Republic of Ireland, as well as throughout the North.   Persecution of religious  minorities, including Jewish people here in the United States, as well as tensions between other ethnic and religious groups might well be rekindled.

Reproductive rights would be totally curtailed, such as the criminalizing of abortion and birth control alike, resulting in more unwanted pregnancies, more domestic violence and more crime.  There would be many more "shotgun"weddings   Scapegoating would be rampant, as would more housing foreclosures, more  severe poverty and more homelessness, and more severe illness as more people would have to make the choice of having a roof over their heads or having adequate health insurance or car insurance.  More sickness and death would result, especially from widespread flu epidemics and other epidemics that kill many, many people, as hospitals have to turn people away due to lack of room.  This would happen because fewer and fewer people would be able to afford preventive health care, and insurance companies, to save money, would continue to deny people life-saving tests/procedures, hence resulting in more deaths and compromising of lives, due to inadequate care.  Hospitals would be severely understaffed, equipment unavailable or hard to come by, and people would be turned away from overcrowded hospitals.  For workers and patients alike, hospital-related infections causing maiming or death, would be a regular occurance.

The gutting of our environmental laws, which have had disastrous results already, would be even worse.  Pollution of our forests,  streams, lakes, rivers and oceans would result in undrinkable, unswimmable water and result in the genetic mutation of various species, both plant and animal life alike, making formerly harmless species harmful, and making already-harmful species still more harmful and life-threatening.

The extinction of certain species would definitely decimate the environment even more.

The cheapening of our culture would continue, resulting in more corruption, crime, and the rise of more incidents such as the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan incident , and sports would become deregulated, producing disastrous results on and off of the playing fields as well.

Anyway--Let's hope this latter possibility doesn't occur.  The  average American public electorate has the power to prevent all that from happening.

Future C:  Future B might result in terrific backlash nationwide, in towns, cities and villages throughout the United States, because the situation would be too intolerable for most people to simply sit back, accept it, and do nothing.  Things would get to a point where people would be so turned off by both major political parties (i. e. the Democrats and Republicans alike), that there'd be more and more clamoring for a viable Independent Third political Party, which would eventually take place, resulting in more accountability, a government by and for the people, a true democracy,  increase in the arts/movies/theatre, and many other better things.

I gotta... (8.00 / 4)
...read more through this later and give my own thoughts.  Great topic, and one I'm deeply interested in, in case nobody noticed.  Heh.

I'm what "they" like to call a "doomer", but "they" have their heads up their asses and I couldn't give a flying fuck what "they" think because the only "doom" I predict is for those who refuse to accept a future based on the reality that the way we live now is completely unsustainable and that the United States of America does not not a Divine Historical Exemption to the brutal realities of life, and no amount of angry pseudo-populist raging and roaring by Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck and the other douchebags they roll with will ever change that.

I think the world will be, overall, a much better place in 50 years than it is now.  That certainly won't be the case for all, but it can be the reality for those of us who are prepared for change.  And I don't mean Branded, Logoed and Copyrighted "Change" in the form of conservative bought-and-paid-for corporate shills masquerading as something else.

More later, or maybe tomorrow.  But there'll be more.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Well Miki (8.00 / 4)
the writing is on the wall isn't it.  I think you have put into words what many are thinking.  I am not good a predicting the out come but I do know that with every down there is an up, even if it is hard to see that is what we have to focus on.  I believe that things break for a reason, lessons to be learned and learned again.

This is the reason I posted the song I did today on Open Tuesday from Leonard Cohen.

There is hope one sign is Firefly Dreaming!

"Anthem"

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

forgive me Miki :O( (8.00 / 3)
with everything going on, I completely forgot to get back to you as I promised... but it's never too late!

again, you sure did give me a whole lot to think about, and I hope for all our sakes that our future resembles parts of your scenario A more than the others. after reading and re-reading your scenario B, however, I sadly find glimpses of what really could be. Perhaps I'm a type of "doomer" like Jay, and though I certainly hope he's right that the world will be a better place in 50 years, I don't really think so. maybe in 200 years, but I can't help but think that the cycles of violence, hunger, poverty, pollution - all will get much worse, IMO, before the world collectively turns a corner for the better.

this is how I see it... if we want to understand the effects we're experiencing in the world right now, we don't have to look further than the causes made in the past. and if we want to know what our future will be, look no further than the causes being made right now in the present. and though there are more and more people joining hearts and minds, realizing that the path we are on is unsustainable... there remain millions upon millions more who could not care less.

the contamination of our planet continues at a horrifying pace... even from space we must seem like pigpen from peanuts - space debris and clouds of space junk, all caused by a select few "advanced" inhabitants of mother earth.

a bit OT, but did you see the movie Avatar? I know it's science fiction, but when Jake, in his Avatar body was praying to Eywa, and says, "If Grace is there with you - look in her memories - she can show you the world we come from. There's no green there. They killed their Mother, and they're gonna do the same thing here." ... it hit me right in the heart and stuck. again, I know it's just a movie, but there's also truth.

domestic violence, abuse, hate crimes (well, all crimes are hate crimes right? 'cause I can't imagine them being from a place of love), as well as internal and external national conflicts continue with no end in sight - almost as if the human race seems destined to give in to our animal nature - dog eat dog, only the strong survive. (though I'm no believer in destiny).

just look at the causes being made, at home and around the world ... it's heartbreaking because for every cause there will be an effect, IMO - for me it's just the way nature works, for every action, there is a reaction.

that's why I have to concentrate on what positive good I can do right here at home, because just thinking about the suffering taking place right now throughout the world, it's almost paralyzing. and that's why I think it will be at least 200-250 years before the seeds being planted by those who really care will begin to grow and bear fruit. right now the weeds are just too thick.

thanks again, Miki, for getting me thinking. hope I didn't bore ya with my ramblings

Hi, newpioneer! (8.00 / 3)
You're welcome, and thanks for a great post, as well as all your compliments, encouragement and support during some of the rougher times that I've gone through.   You never bore me with your posts/threads at all, newpioneer, and you didn't bore me this time, either.

For me, without exception, although it may seem rather wierd to many people, pointing out and going into detail about the negativity of things is necessary before heading into more positive thinking and arriving at a solution to a given  problem or problems, although the world can't be solved on one's own.

No, I didn't see the movie Avatar, newpioneer.  Was it any  good?  It sounds like an interesting film, from the way you describe it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
I think you're exactly right, Miki... (8.00 / 3)
the problems have to be pointed out and uncovered, no matter how negative, if we're ever gonna solve them. burying our heads in the sand sure won't work! that's why those of us who do care can never give up doing good, and try to expand that circle of heart to heart bonds. eventually those seeds will sprout.

and I loved Avatar. I don't go to the movies an awful lot, but I'm really glad I saw that one. if ya get the chance to see it, I think you'll like it.

and Miki, you've been such an encouragement for me as well, so I say we're exactly even in the mutual hugs department! I know it was a shock about the baby timnehs, unfortunately I know exactly how you felt. I had no idea that rabbits were known for the same nature as the timneh's parents until we started raising them. I should have been more thorough in my homework, but I promise ya it will never happen again here.

and on a much more positive note... I can't wait to see pics of your new baby!!!

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
Hi there..Thanks, newpioneer! (8.00 / 3)
Blogs like this one, which promote feelings of goodwill between bloggers, are what encourage support for each other on the blogosphere.  I'll have to think about going to see "Avatar", which I'm sure is playing in many places.  Thanks for the suggestion, newpioneer.

Sorry to hear what happened to your rabbits.  Animals, as well as many humans, can be unpredictable.  When I was in the 4th grade, I had a pair of  albino mice as pets, which were kept in a cage.  One morning, I found one of the mice dead in the cage, with bite marks in his side.  Obviously one of the mice had killed the other and bitten it in the side.

Regarding what happened with the baby Timnehs, given the fact that (A)  The breeder had had this pair of breeder Timneh African Grey parrots for quite awhile and had not had this happen before, and (B), from what I've heard and read, sometimes the parents will kill the babies if the babies have something wrong with them, or the parents think that the babies have something wrong with them, and without knowing all the facts, I can only conclude one thing for myself;  that the parents of the baby Timneh African Greys killed their babies because there was something wrong with the babies, although I'll never know the reasons why.

Although I can't speak for the rabbits, newpioneer, given what I've just learned, is it possible that the baby rabbit(s) got killed by their parents because there was something wrong with the babies?  Just wondering.  This, too, sounds like it just happened out of the blue, and one can't always blame themselves for "not doing a good enough job of taking care of things", or trying to be more careful of what kind of rabbits or other animals one gets.

newpioneer--you've also been an encouragement for me.  Thanks very much again for that.

Good luck with everything, newpioneer.  Keep up the good workl.  godspeed again to you and Juan.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

animals seem to have a 6th sense... (8.00 / 2)
when it comes to their young... dogs and cats will sometimes push away one of their pups or kittens, and off I go to get out the baby bottles and goats milk. only to sometimes have the little one pass away no matter my best efforts. mom knew.

as far as the rabbits go, when a doe has a litter, and she can 'see' another rabbit, especially another doe, then that sometimes triggers infanticide. that's because their nature is to burrow and hide when giving birth, and having so many others around can make them more than a little nervous.

the first time this happened with me, I was in shock. I asked everyone here in the area, including who we got the rabbits from, what the hell was going on. every one of them answered, she's a 'mala madre', a bad mother, and she would only be good for meat. even our vet didn't have any answer besides 'it sometimes happens'. she's fantastic with our dogs and cats... not so much with rabbits. either way, I just wasn't buying the bad mother theory, or 'it sometimes happens'.

it took me less than an hour of online research to find the answer, and now I completely isolate my females starting about a week before they're due. problem solved. my doe that just had 9 kittens was that original 'mala madre', and now she's one of our best at giving us healthy babies.

O, Alma, (8.00 / 2)
I didn't mean for you to get all misty. but I just couldn't believe there wasn't an explanation for this. mala madre? no way.

maybe this will cheer you up... I just went and took these just for you, here are a couple of my babies just starting to grow hair!!

Oh goodness gracious (6.67 / 3)
I've never seen bunnies that little before.  Thank You Newp! :)

The tears were happy tears that you took the time to figure out what was going on.

Brother you are really something special and I wish I had the words to convey to you how good you make people feel.  You have a thoughtful caring about everything and everyone that always brightens my day and gives me hope.  If everyone cared as much as you do, we would have no war, all people would be taken care of and our environment would be well on the way to being protected.  I just think you're great newp.  :)

[ Parent ]
ghaaa! (8.00 / 2)
believe me sister, I'm nothing special, though I feel the exact same way about all of you here. maybe you'd think with so many animals and so much to do, that I'd never really get lonely, but it's not true. if it wasn't for the love and encouragement I get here I don't know what I'd do. since Juan's health has started to decline, even our good friends don't come around anymore.

I hope you know just how wonderful getting to know you has been for me, Alma. I feel so fortunate being a part of this firefly majik - everyone here is incredible.

Interesting post, newpioneer! (8.00 / 2)
Animals do have an acute sixth sense, and do sometimes do weird stuff to their babies.  There's clearly no easy answer to how or why animals (and humans, too) sometimes cannibalize each other, but sadly, it does happen.  Perhaps this phenomenem might have something to do with why the baby Timneh African Grey Parrots that were supposed to come into the store next week were killed off by their parents..we'll never really know.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
