What's Your Favourite....?

RiaD :: What's Your Favourite....?
Our girl comes up about once a month or so & visits for about a week. At first I thought it was because of my ill-health & her wanting to help me out & so the princess & i can have time together.
But sometime in the last few days it occurred to me she comes as much, maybe more(!) to get advice, to be told she's doing a fine job in raising the princess.
and I got to thinking about when I had little ones- how my mom & mrD's mom always gave me conflicting advice when & if they gave me any advice at all. and how mostly I felt all alone in trying to raise two little people to become intelligent, questioning, Good adults.
and how it takes a village to raise a child.

so.....

What's Your Favourite.....  Advice for Raising Children???
what did others share with you that worked?
what "tricks" did you come up with yourself?

Well, the one that worked on me (13.67 / 3)
during the "picky eater" phase was: "You don't have to eat all of it, but you have to eat one bite of it."  So I would ostentatiously eat the ONE bite (gha!  canned stewed tomatoes!  Still won't touch 'em!) and wash the horrible taste out of my mouth with subsequent bites of whatever I did like (in the case of stewed tomatoes, that would be mac & cheese).

I did grow up to have an adventurous palate, and it is probably partly b/c of the One Bite rule.  It is probably also b/c by the time I got to high school I realized what terrible cooking I'd been exposed to, and set out to explore truly edible foods...

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

I can give you the worst thing to do with a child who stutters - (12.67 / 3)
I was (well am) a single parent with a lot on my plate and my sweet son started stuttering - I guess because he sensed my tenseness - hell, I know he sensed it.  One horrific day - when he stuttered a bit (about age 5) I screamed at him - stop stuttering gd it.  Yes, I had a bad day at work and yes, I had no money but really - how awful is this! He never stuttered again.  DO NOT DO THIS - IT IS WHAT A TERRIBLE MOTHER DOES.  Oddly, he didn't stutter again.

To show you how sensitive babies are - when my son heard Greensleeves at about age 5 again at some kids' show, he started crying.  I talked to him about it (nicely) and asked what was wrong.  Tell me.  He really couldn't.  I spoke to a friend of mine who's dad was a psychiatrist and asked him to ask his dad.  After all, I said, I used to walk him when he cried as an infant and sang this song to him.

He called me up and said - were you tense when you sang it.  Well, yes - but I never showed the baby.  He felt it strongly said my friend.  This is how sensitive babies are.  My God, it's a wonder he survived given my
craziness for the first 4 years or so.

SO COME TO ME IF YOU WANT TERRIBLE TIPS.

That the heart grows old.

You must have done something right!  Kids are more sensitive than adults give them credit for...but also more resilient.

I think most (10.00 / 2)
of mine are of the DO NOT DO variety too.

Like the time when my kids aged 4 and 5, and I was watching my nephew aged 5 every day and the neighbors aged 3, and 4 three times a week.  I don't remember what one of them had done but I lined them up sitting on the couch to try and find out who did it.  I wasn't having any luck.  Nobody was confessing or telling on the one who did it.  So I had this great idea (sarcasm) of giving a cookie to the perpetrator if they confessed.  Well Katie confessed and I knew dang well at the time that she hadn't done it, but she took one for the team and got a cookie to boot.  LOL
