Sundown Thursday

If you have gotten here through a search for something involving J.R.R. Tolkien or Lord of the Rings the conversation about that starts HERE
The comment with LINKs to Lord of the Rings Artwork is HERE

Thank you for visiting firefly-dreaming

It looked like continuity would be broken tonight after another perfect day. Not by clouds but the lack of them. A too bright sun can feel good but it is too bright for both eyes and cameras. But the clearing came and went, leaving a few to show.

Along with my usual sunset nonsense, I've got another lucky eleven below.

Eddie C :: Sundown Thursday
At first the sky was both moody and promising.

But sunsets are sort of like Christmas presents. Only you can't even get a hint by shaking it to see what's inside. Just wait and see.

Oh no, the clearing below will cause a blinding sun.

Slam!

Okay more clouds, we are back in action.

The view downriver.

What was probably the actual sunset with a narrow cloud above for reflection.

And sunshine looking like lava spewing through the clouds.

That last gasp.

So long, April 8, 2010.

I mean Twilight (7.86 / 7)

I can't wait for June 30th.

[ Parent ]
Eddie are you into these (8.00 / 6)
movies?  I have not seen one of them.  They are big here as they are filmed on the coast here in Washington in a little town called Forks.  This preview does peak my interest!

Yes I am. (8.00 / 6)
Never read the stories but I love the youthfulness and imagination. i was introduced to new music that is outside of my travels and the scenery is to die for. Plus the DP is really good at presenting that area of Washington.  Have you seen the Vampire baseball segment?

First, can you name that waterfall? I just love the way the bad vampires emerge from the clouds and after the two good vampires have a mid air collision, edward flips the bird.

Now I know what hat song is.

And here is the finial song of Twilight.

If you have nine minuets to spare, this is the best scene in the first movie.

But remember who you are dealing with. I started the day with a vampire reply to you today and I think "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" is one of the best lines ever.

[ Parent ]
Eddie, I'm not much (8.00 / 6)
into vampires, but I agree with this:

I think "I have crossed oceans of time to find you" is one of the best lines ever.

Sleep all day, stay out all night. (8.00 / 7)
what's better than that?

[ Parent ]
heh (8.00 / 5)

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

back at ya, with one of his band mates (8.00 / 6)

I never forget this for as long as I live. The Thursday following September 11th when Q104.3 returned to a music format, that was the first song they played. It was unbearable.

[ Parent ]
always have (8.00 / 6)
loved this song....
it just reaches out & grabs me.

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

I think this waterfall (8.00 / 6)
is seasonal.  The western side of the Olympic National Part is very wet. Annual precipitation ranges from 141 to 165 inches a year with 2 rain forest the Hoh and the Quinault.

Forks is a very small town that has become famous because of the books and movies.  Here are so links about the area.

From were I am looking west to the Olympic Mountains this is what I see in Seattle looking west across the water (Puget Sound) these are the mountains you see.......

There are no roads through these mountains only a 2 line windy road around.  What isn't National Forest is Indian reservations.

This is the best map I could find, it has lots of links, and Forks is in Section 4 of this map.

But there is one thing that is worrisome about "Twilight" (8.00 / 7)
The plot makes vampires so appealing that I fear when young American women run into a real vampire they will lower their guard.

[ Parent ]
LOL (8.00 / 6)
There's a few bad vamps in them, oh and what about the werewolves? Those poor American girls will be all over the wolves!

You didn't miss much in the books Eddie.  Most of them are well written but boring IMO.  I haven't seen the movies but they would have to be more exciting than the books.

[ Parent ]
Alma (8.00 / 6)
what is interesting to me about these books the writer is Mormon so Mormons are really into them.

Bear Shake Tree Pictures, Images and Photos

[ Parent ]
Oh there's tons (8.00 / 6)
of people into them, and I've always figured the lack of any sexual action was because of the writers religion, and also the wolves bonding with children comes from that point of view I believe. Katies set of them have been borrowed by more people than I ever remember any of our books being requested.

[ Parent ]
The lack of any sexual action? (8.00 / 6)
Well maybe there is no "sexual action" in the books but that was the most teen sexual action I ever seen. Of course I don't get out much nor do I view pornography but keeping their cloths on in that movie and having multiple orgasms anyway was, well it was "sexual action."

[ Parent ]
I sure don't remember any (8.00 / 6)
orgasms in the books.(It has been a few years since I read them, so I could have just forgotten)  Not even what I would call heavy petting.  They did some french kissing, and infer they would like it to go farther, but not until after marriage of course on Edwards part.  Edward did lay on Bellas bed a lot and hold her.

[ Parent ]
Thta's all that happened in the movie (8.00 / 5)
but that's sex too.

when you watch the last video I posted, I think that was super sexually charged.

[ Parent ]
My set up here (8.00 / 5)
isn't good for listening to things online, so I haven't watched the video, sorry.

I'm glad they managed to make the movies more interesting than the books, that doesn't happen very often, especially with a series.  Sure didn't happen with Lord of the Rings, or Harry Potter IMO.

[ Parent ]
i certainly agree (8.00 / 4)
about Lord of the Rings!
they really should've stuck with the book throughout...
adding a "love interest" added nothing, imho, only detracted from the storyline & made it more convoluted.

i only read a couple of the harry potters & never have seen the movies that i recall.

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
I read all (8.00 / 4)
the Harry Potters but only saw the first 3 movies, so I probably shouldn't have made a blanket statement sounding like I had seen all of them.

[ Parent ]
What added love interest? (8.00 / 4)
The triangle between Aragorn, Arwen Evenstar and Eowyn of Rohan was in the books.

Actually I think they might have left one love interest out because it seemed a bit kinky. I was pretty sure that Frodo was looking to fondle Galadriel but they would have made a pretty odd couple.

And just to get back to Twilight, today is Kristen Stewart's birthday. Now she is the ripe old age of twenty!

[ Parent ]
the love (8.00 / 4)
of aragorn/arwen was there but a very minor sub-plot; arwen was a very very minor character.
peter jackson changed things to give her a more important role.

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
Au contraire (8.00 / 3)
Eowyn slayed the Nazgul. It's really hard being a minor charterer with that sort of originality.  Can you name many female super heroes prior to Eowyn?

Long before those movies came out, like about forty years before that love triangle played on on the imagination of every boy who could read. I actually remember serious teenage arguments, Eowyn vs. Arwen. To young boys of imagination that was an extremely important question in the development of growing up to choose a mate.

[ Parent ]
i have no (8.00 / 3)
complaint about eowyn. she is a hero! & i think jackson portrayed her part well, even showing her divided mind over taking their people to shelter or riding out....

i said:

arwen was a very very minor character.

it was not she who called down the river... it was gandalf, one of the most moving scenes in the books imho. jackson just made waaay too much of arwen. her part in the books was very minor. much less than eowyn's. peter jackson made it seem as if arwen was a main character.

i have not seen or heard of the interview with Tolkien you referenced.
& we have many, many books on Tolkien, both by him and about him.

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
Oh I read fast (8.00 / 3)
Or just assumed that you would not figure that Half-elven beauty who chose her destiny to be a queen of humans over immortality was a minor character. I just never saw her as anything like minor in that story.

Oh yes Peter Jackson gave her more scenes but her part played the first triumphant announcement of the King's return really did not translate well. Besides Liv Tyler, she was perfect for the visuals in reader's minds.

By the way I do that all the time, read words without seeing them.

[ Parent ]
My problem was a lack of Ghân-buri-Ghân (8.00 / 4)
Did you ever hear of the Brothers Hildebrandt? I guess my calender for 1976, 1977, and 1978 was their JRR Tolkien Lord of the Rings calendars but it seemed like more years than that in my memory. I loved them so I just went looking for their painting of Eowyn slaying the Nazgul because it reminded me so much of the movie scene.

I did remember that they illustrated The Sword of Shannara but I was pretty shocked to learn that they did a most famous Star Wars illustration too.

This was one of my favorites, Bilbo the Barrel Rider.

I still haven't found a real great copy of what I'm looking for but Rivendell is really high quality. Here is one copy of Eowyn slaying the Nazgul that someone scanned and that comes from a master page that offers a total of 38. Good memories in those scans.

I seem to remember one of Gandalf descending with the Balrog but perhaps it was by another artist.

[ Parent ]
heh (8.00 / 4)
yes. we have the hildebrandt calendars. in fact we had two of either '76 or '77 (the one with full spread grey havens in the middle) because we both had one when we met.  in fact, one of the reasons i married mrD was because he had a copy of LOTR... the only books he had. you must understand this is SC... many here are illiterate. i was often teased (& worse) for reading
we took the extra calendar apart and framed the pictures.
i also have a poster that came from a bookstore... it has the weird picture that Tolkein did not like- a strange tree with bulbous red things hanging on & bizarre animals... & says at the bottom come to middle earth

the only illustrator i've found to compare with the brothers hildebrandt is Michael Hague (his website is a bit strange to navigate... find the glittery things & mouse over them)
he did The Hobbit (Illustrated edition)

[ Parent ]
That's very cool (8.00 / 4)
I wish I had kept mine. I probably did for a few years and then lost them on some move. I lived in Manhattan for a few years and space was tight.

Listen about my problem posting. I don't have one hard wired but being up close to the modem is really uncomfortable for me. It is a wireless issue and I have neither the funds or for the inclination to set up a new wireless.

I'm hardwired now in the living room on my PC and waiting to see how long it will take, if ever for my my comment to post in rossl's diary on the Mac in the bedroom. The page has been locked since around 5:45. I'm not double clicking again.

[ Parent ]
you can double click (8.00 / 3)
i'll just delete the extras. no problem.

i wish i knew what to do to help you...
win the lottery?

[ Parent ]
And don't even think about telling me that the relationship (8.00 / 4)
Between Legolas and Gimli was strictly platonic.

[ Parent ]
Would you like to hear some serious romance that can be found... (8.00 / 4)
in the "Lord of the Rings"trilogy?

The Gray Havens that could be found to the west of Middle Earth. J.R.R. Tolkien said in an interview that Middle Earth was represented and The Gray Havens, land of the Fair was America. He originally began the story just before World War I, with the Hobbit coming out before World War II and the ring being published in post war Britain. The Dough Boys, FDR and the G.I.'s seemed like the noble and the fair.

Okay now flash forward to the final chapter of "Return of The King" when those Gray Havens come into play. Frodo is torn between leaving the home land and both he and Sam wonder the forest as he contemplates his destiny, immigrate to a new world or return to the Shire? As they wonder they often notice Elves smoking and talking in the forest.

Now let us consider for a moment the lyrics of what was once considered to be the most popular song of all time;

There's a feeling I get when I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking
and it makes me wonder
really makes me wonder

And it's whispered that soon if we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn for those who stand long
And the forest will echo with laughter

In the post-apocalypse of the defeat of Sauron (Hitler) Frodo wants to go but he fears the the Shire needs him.

If there's a bustle in your hedgerow, don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean from the May Queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, Ooh, it makes me wonder

Your head is humming and it won't go, in case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can't you hear the wind blow, and did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind

Then as they wonder further through the forest will still no decision about the path that Frodo will take, a light appears. It is the light of the Lady Galadriel who helps Frodo make his difficult decision;

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all, yeah
To be a rock and not to roll.

And she's buying the stairway to heaven

I got to an abbreviation at Top Comments. (8.00 / 6)
A little more time to think about it and it seemed like five phases.

[ Parent ]
O~ (7.33 / 6)
our big rain has passed, just regular rain now.

& i found this today.
it's not PC but it amused me

And there's an old joke I heard years and years ago...

Heaven is where the policemen are English, the cooks are French, the workers are German, the lovers are Italian, and everything is run by the Swiss.

Hell is where the policemen are German, the cooks are English, the workers are French, the lovers are Swiss, and everything is run by the Italians.

Really not PC (8.00 / 6)
But funny.

[ Parent ]
LOL! When I heard (7.83 / 6)
that joke, it was almost the same, except:

In Heaven, the Swiss were the mechanics.  In Hell, the Italians were...

I think another difference was that, in Hell, the English were the lovers.  I'm trying to remember the version as I heard it, but this was (mumbledy) years ago....

Either way, it's hysterical.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
