Photo Diary: The Columbia River Gorge

I fell in love with the Columbia River Gorge on my first visit to Portland, OR when I was 9. My great-aunt Margaret had moved from Danville, IL to Lake Oswego, OR to enjoy her retirement living near her son & his wife. Her sister, my beloved Grandma Florence, decided that in the summer of 1980 that she & her boyfriend would take me on a summer road-trip to see Margaret. It was a fantastic trip where I flew from my home of Bangor, ME to Chicago and then we drove to Oregon. I got to see lots of things both on the way there and then back including the Grand Tetons, the Black Hills and lots of cornfields! Heh, I also read lots & lots of my Nancy Drew mysteries in the back of my Grandma's big ol' Cadillac as we made our way across the west. Once in the lush rainforest of the Willamette Valley we were treated to lots of beauty courtesy of my 2nd cousin Bob (Margaret's son) & his wife Sue. One of these gems of Oregon beauty was "The Gorge". Picture at left is my fiance & I looking out from the Crown Point Vista House towards the east end of the gorge

When I visited Oregon again in 1986 the Gorge was one of the places I specifically asked to go see again. When I moved to Portland in 1996 I wasted no time returning to the many gorgeous waterfalls as often as I could. In 2007 a friend of my fiance's came to visit from San Marcos TX. He was in town for a web developer/programmer type of conference but arranged to arrive early so he could stay with us for a day before the event began. We both quickly decided that in addition to showing him Portland highlights such as the Rose Garden and Powells Books that we had to make a trip out to the Gorge. It was also the first time I had been out there with a nice new digital camera!

The view out the car window as we headed east on I-84. That's Mt. Hood off to the right.

Leaving the freeway and heading up into the Gorge the first place we stopped at was the Crown Point Vista House.

Some interior shots:

The view from Crown Pt. looking west (back towards Portland):

Crown Pt. view looking east:

Then we proceeded to the first of the falls. Probably the best known and certainly highly photographed. Multnomah Falls

A view of the upper part of the falls:

Now the lower:

A closer look at the bottom of the upper part just under the bridge (you can see at the bottom of the frame the start of the lower fall):

Lush late spring greenery with the falls:

And off to the side of the path some sun-dappled bleeding hearts in the forest foliage:

We continued down the old Historic Columbia River Highway and stopped at Latourell Falls next.

Through the trees:

Then a stop at Horsetail Falls:

We stopped at a few other smaller waterfalls but my camera was running low on batteries and I felt I had taken a gajillion waterfall shots already;) Then we headed back towards Portland and decided to indulge by having dinner at one of my favorite places: McMenamins Edgefield where we wandered around the grounds showing our guest the winery, distillery, brewery, hotel and movie theater pub before sitting down for some of the tasty craft beers & juicy burgers. As we headed out of the parking lot and down the road to get back onto the freeway the sun was setting in a haze and I snapped one final pic to close out the day:

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

It is one of the most beautiful places I've been to. (13.00 / 4)
I miss being in Portland and just a half-hour drive away from all that luscious beauty. I wish I had pictures from another Oregon waterfall-lovers' paradise: Silver Falls State Park. But I did not have a digital camera when I went there last. And all my old-school pictures are in albums back in Portland in storage. Ah well.

This summer I would really like to try and get over to Crater Lake now that I'm so close. Fingers crossed!

I also have some other photo diaries in mind to share later on so I'm glad you enjoyed this one!

I loved Oregon when we travelled there on weekends. (15.00 / 4)
This was when I lived in San Francisco.

I almost bought land near Lake Klamoth - it was cheap in the 60s.  I'm looking around for a new place to live.  Portland is one of my choices to check.

A friend here said with a frown: But it's foggy there so much.  Thing is:  I absolutely love the fog.  and I heard roses do well there.

That the heart grows old.

It's not foggy that much, def not like SF! (15.00 / 4)
It does rain a lot though;) And it is called the City of Roses for a reason;) EVERYONE grows roses in Portland! I am currently in Medford and I miss Portland terribly! If you don't have to worry about finding a job I'd recommend moving there but the job market is still just terrible.

Lovely - thanks, ninkasi - I am retired - (14.67 / 3)
and I am a rosarian -

Gorgeous pictures (11.20 / 5)
Such loveliness. Thanks for sharing it with us.

What fantastic pictures. Thanks for posting them and sharing them with us. (12.60 / 5)
I've never been anywhere in Oregon, but I have been to California's Napa Valley area, and to San Francisco, both of which I enjoyed very much.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
