RiaD :: ratings

It as been on my mind that we might should change some of the ratings.

This really made an impact on me when my daughter was here visiting
& i just really didn't have time to comment.

and so many of them we just. don't. use.

ratings can be a shorthand way of expressing what you want to say.

i particpate/have participated at several blogs...
each seems to have their own take on the subject of ratings.

some have just a good/bad type thing.... like dailykos

some have many ratings with things like: (0)just plain bullshit; my sympathies/that sucks; thanks/you're welcome; ROFLMAO; respectfully, NO!; etc, etc....

one rating i will be adding is  mmgrmthphahaha!
i just say it too often to not have a laughter rating....

Here are some ratings that have been suggested.

Love it

Thought provoking

You are a teacher

I am taking notes

A gift

A treasure

This changed my life

Tell me more

Where do we go from here?

SOooooo.....

1) which ratings should we change (or keep, whichever you prefer)

2) what do you think would make good ratings??
feel free to use the ones mentioned here
or tell me other ideas you have

tell me what you want... (8.00 / 9)
sorry. this is the only version of this i can find :(

a good idea (8.00 / 8)
that's what I think ria, but I don't have specific ratings except to say I'd love to see the laughter one and perhaps one that said I couldn't agree with you more if I had said it myself but shorter.  It would make the ratings more fun, like playing with tags.

ICAWYMIIHSIM?? (8.00 / 8)
how's that?

One of the only things... (8.00 / 8)
...I like about dKos these days is the ratings system - up or down, basically.

As far as ratings go, I'd prefer one (don't be a dick!) and two (fuck yeah!), because nobody's a zero.

;-P

For anything in between, that's what discussion in the comments is for, isn't it?  But this is just my opinion, and I have a feeling I'm probably in the minority...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

And on... (8.00 / 9)
But then again, if I ran a blog, some of the ratings would definitely be -

You Make The Baby Jesus Cry

You Make The Baby Jesus Laugh

You Make The Baby Jesus Dance

You Puzzle The Baby Jesus

You Make The Baby Jesus Want To Puke

Just because I think these would be amusing.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

heh (8.00 / 8)
you make the fireflys dance

I agree with you Jay (8.00 / 8)
Its much simpler.

I always feel like I'm downrating people if I use any of the middle ones.  I would use
Gha a heck of a lot more but then people would think I didn't like their comment since its only worth half as much as a Brilliant, but really I could like the Gha rated comment more.

[ Parent ]
Alma you are so sweet (8.00 / 8)
I think here at firefly it would be hard to even have a thumbs down kind of rating.

Bear Shake Tree Pictures, Images and Photos

[ Parent ]
Yeah, (8.00 / 8)
I don't think many negative ratings would be used except on accident.  And isn't that a rare and wonderful thing to be able to say sister?

Firefly is special and I think the combined energy of all the truely good people here makes a circle of protection and love for all who care to enter and join.  Sure we will probably have a few here and there over the years that don't understand the site and want to cause trouble, but I think our energy will be able to handle them just fine.

so beautiful, and so true

[ Parent ]
ahhh (7.43 / 7)
i tried at first doing 6's & 7's and like you felt i was downrating...
that's another reason this ratings thing is on my mind.
what is the point of having 8 ratings if we only ever use 2 or 3?

i tried to do ratings with NO numbers. but it wont let me.
but.
we can train ourselves to not pay much attention to the numbers.
not think of the numbers as values so much...

i've seen comments at some sites that have 8 or 10 ratings...
they might have 2 people say that sux, 1 person say uh-huh, 2 more say you're brilliant, and one say just BS... and the number average shows laughter!

that's why to have different ratings say different things.... like shorthand kinda

at first i wasn't real convinced about this method, but when our girl was here i saw the wisdom in it. & you can always leave a comment too explaining or continuing your thoughts.

gha! can mean just about anything. good or not so much.
i can't speak for anyone else but i like seeing others using gha!
i don't feel so alone and i like seeing how others interpret it's use.
from my (not very accurate) observations it's being used in a variety of ways...

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
yes, now we must (8.00 / 6)
retrain ourselves to not look at the numbers but the sentiments.  I'm going to start using more of the ratings we have, just to start getting used to it.  I think critical ratings call for an explanation, it's so easy to misunderstand without inflection so perhaps we would clear up stuff too.  I feel safe enough here to try it anyway.  Thanks for bringing this up.

[ Parent ]
I could never give a "gha" rating b/c (8.00 / 6)
when I use it in a comment, it's usually NOT a positive thing.  As in:  gha! what a horrible night at work it was.  (It was, too.  I was there just short of 11 hours: the groceries came in shortly before I did so of course nothing had been put away -- Fridays are very busy -- and we only had 3 people for two hours; not nearly long enough to deal with everything.)

So I'm kinda with Jay: thumbs up or thumbs down.  Much simpler.

But it's your blog & I'll go with whatever you & the consensus say.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

I was laying in bed last night (7.88 / 8)
thinking about this.....

I think we should mix it up so the numbers have no meaning like this.........

As an example:

1. Brilliant

2. Thought provoking

3. Thank you/ your welcome

4. You are a teacher

5. I am sorry/ that suxs

6. Where do we go from here?

7. This changed my life

8. ROFLMAO

We are all too tenderhearted to give anyone a negative and I don't remember reading one thing here that would attract a negative from me.

I have remembered seeing people on line here that I thought oh boy now here it comes (because they have caused a lot of problems at other sites) and they never even ended up joining in the conversation.  It was like because there is no war they didn't want to be here.  Firefly is about healing love, that is what we give so that is what we attract.

Some of the most beautiful things i have here read were written here, like this from Alma in this thread.......  I love you Alma......

Firefly is special and I think the combined energy of all the truely good people here makes a circle of protection and love for all who care to enter and join.

I agree with this totally......

Sure we will probably have a few here and there over the years that don't understand the site and want to cause trouble, but I think our energy will be able to handle them just fine.

(^.^) (8.33 / 6)
i like that idea!

[ Parent ]
I'm with ya! (6.43 / 7)
thinking along those same lines, Kathleen... making the "numbers" meaningless, maybe even changing the order up regularly to keep us paying attention to the words we're sending and not the numbers.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
brilliant!!! (6.60 / 5)
Great Idea!

~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
The words (7.50 / 6)
are definitly more important than the numbers.  Changing the order occasionally will keep us on our toes.  :)

[ Parent ]
LOL (12.00 / 2)
Too much like work.  As in:  everydamntime I memorize something, like the price of our most popular sellers, Corporate changes the goddamn price point.

Sometimes it changes twice in the same month.

Now you want me to memorize stuff here?

Do I LOOK like a Memorex tape?

(^.^)

E. B. White

[ Parent ]
I sure don't (1.00 / 1)
I don't think I could memorize it.  My brain just doesn't function that way anymore.

[ Parent ]
I LOVE that idea Kathleen (8.00 / 5)
Mixing up the numbers, so they have no relevance makes a LOT of sense for here.  :)

[ Parent ]
I'm not too tenderhearted (5.33 / 3)
and neither is Karam!!!

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I think (8.00 / 5)
there are too many, and lessers are like downrating. I've only used 'brilliant' to rec, even if the fine expression isn't exactly brilliant (and doesn't need to be). I'd do:

Meh.
Heh.
Right On!

That way you get the basic TR, a midrange and a rec. But that's just me, heh... §;o)

[ Parent ]
OK I will give it a stab (8.00 / 7)
These are my favorites, thanks for the list Ria!  I agree with Jay somewhat but the more I think about it I would like to have more expression than that.  Sometimes it is all I can do is get here and read what is going on much less respond so I need more than just an up or down.

gha!

I am sorry/that sucks!

Where do we go from here?

Thank you/your welcome

Thought provoking

You are a teacher

ROFLMAO

This changed my life

brilliant

Bear Shake Tree Pictures, Images and Photos

yes (7.43 / 7)
that's what prompted me to write this... time constraints!
& with the garden going in (this weekend hopefully!) i'll have less time then i do now....

what i hope to do is gather a list of everyones suggestions...
then do front page polls to whittle it down, if necessary.

one thing....
should we have an "i read this" rating?
sometimes i'll read something & really have no opinion, nothing to say...

would it make people feel bad to get i read this?

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
I would feel bad........ (8.00 / 7)
LOL I know often I will read, but want to chew on it a bit before I comment, but with that said wouldn't any of the other comments mean you read it?  If I got a, I've read this,  I would want to respond with AND? or OK?  It is too much like a check mark on the to do list, you task master you.  LOL

Bear Shake Tree Pictures, Images and Photos

[ Parent ]
yup. you're correct (8.00 / 7)
i really do want to add thank you/you're welcome and i'm sorry/that sux

those are really meaningful phrases that one often needs...

i do definitely want to keep gha! and brilliant

i think we can have 12 ratings

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
Well, but. (10.00 / 2)
How can you tell what rating you got from any individual?

Let's say one of my comments got a 5.6:  How can I look up who gave it a "brilliant" vs. who gave it a "gha" vs. who gave it a "shut the fuck up" (OK I made that one up) vs. who gave it a ROFLMAO?

I tried, several times tonight, and couldn't get anywhere beyond the combined score.  If we're going to have an elaborate system of ratings, it would be helpful, I think, to see whether people are ROFLMAO or going, get a life.

Y'know?

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

[ Parent ]
Oh, and I don't really (12.00 / 2)
care so much WHO gave WHICH rating as I do seeing what rating it is:  was it a gha?  or a ROFLMAO? or the I couldn't agree with you more acronym, or STFU, or...whatever?

There's the thing: I will roll with this, Ria, I love your blog, but if you want an elaborate system of rec's, then those of us who are getting incomprehensible scores should be able to see whether our readers are laughing hysterically or throwing cow pies at us.

Y'know?  And maybe you already have a system in place for that, and I just haven't figured it out yet (hell, I still don't know how to update my drivers), but please, could you, please, do a follow-up on all this?

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

[ Parent ]
youff (3.50 / 2)
you can right click & open in new tab on the rating of your comment.
that'll show you who gave what number.
then, on your original page, find a comment & drop-down the rating thingey
then you can compare who gave what rating.

How about a reating for us Neu Yawkers (8.00 / 9)
Forgetaboutit.

As long as... (8.00 / 8)
...we recognize that that's originally a Jersey phrase, sure!

12: "Ay, fuggedaboutit"

:)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
I must amend my request (8.00 / 7)
Jay is a much better speller than I, so "fuggedaboutit"

[ Parent ]
LOL! Eddie, I was just (8.00 / 7)
about to correct your spelling when I saw that Jay beat me to it.

I think that spelling is both Jersey and Brooklyn, btw. ;-D

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

[ Parent ]
I like (8.00 / 8)
forgetaboutit  maybe like this...

It's OK forgetaboutit

Bear Shake Tree Pictures, Images and Photos

[ Parent ]
Versatility... (8.00 / 9)
It can mean so much more than just that, though!

See Eddie's clip above, fuggedaboutit!

It's the most versatile phrase in the (Northern NJ-NYC area) English language, imo.  You can write a thesis on its usage and etymology!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
How about something like this: (8.00 / 7)
0 - Needs Replacing

1 - Respectfully Disagree

2 - Gha!

3 - mmgrmthphahaha!

4 - Good Point

5 - You're a Teacher

6 - Brilliant!

Photobucket

Oh, and one more: (8.00 / 7)
"Let me chew on it."

That would be a way of acknowledging the comment without necessarily agreeing or disagreeing.

when I first came here...... (8.00 / 6)
I was intimidated by the rating system.....

and tried to use some of the in between ratings.....

but I felt I was being in some way critical.....

I noticed that you all used really only brilliant.....

so I quickly accommodated that reality.....

I have always been uncomfortable with ratings all together....

for me it might look something like

1 wish you had not said that
2 disagree
3 hum I need to consider that
4 agree
4 thank you that added something to my world

then most of my ratings would be 3 or 4

sorry that last one would be 5... (8.00 / 5)
and most of my ratings would be 4 or 5.....

sieve~ (7.83 / 6)
please see this post:

http://www.firefly-dreaming.co...

it was supposed to just be an edit to this one & somehow turned into a new essay.

i'm ever so sorry the ratings made you feel uncomfortable.
we are in process of changing that!
i do not want anyone to ever feel uncomfortable here....

~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
You did not make me feel uncomfortable...... (6.40 / 5)
just the number of choices.....

and that is more a reflection on me than anything else....

so please do not worry about it......

it was just a matter of getting used to it......

and I have went to the other and voted thank you.....

[ Parent ]
Ria may i ask a question..... (3.50 / 2)

of course you can! (14.00 / 1)
