What a Difference a Week Makes

8am~
Photobucket
chaos

It's been often said that, "time heals all wounds", but I'm not so sure about that. Though a week's passing has certainly seen a world of difference in my own life, and for that I'm profoundly grateful, I can't help but believe that some of our fellow travelers have wounds that no amount of time can ever heal.
newpioneer :: What a Difference a Week Makes
How could we ever heal if we were together with our brothers and sisters in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan and our lives were literally ripped apart by war?

How would we ever sleep soundly, free from the nightmares that continue to haunt our brothers and sisters in Haiti?

How could we completely heal from the injustices suffered by our brothers and sisters in the West Bank and Gaza?

How can our Jewish brothers and sisters ever heal from the horrors of the holocaust and their continued persecution simply because of their faith?

How could we possibly heal if we were living the lives of our brothers and sisters in Darfur?

How will we heal here within our own country from the from the deep, deep wounds of intolerance and racism, from the faithless hate of ideological divides, from the crippling poverty and hunger that still affects so many of our fellow brothers and sisters?

How can our planet ever recover and heal from the contamination and abuse wrought by the human race?

So very many questions, and the answers are still beyond the reach of my imagination...

But out of chaos, beauty can emerge...and even the deepest winter never fails to turn to spring.

Photobucket

So I can't give up. I refuse to give in to the chaos and suffering cries that seem to emanate from every corner of our world. Just as sure as I know evil exists ... good, too, exists, though in my heart I must admit that the balance is definitely not in our favor.

Photobucket

I also reject the notion that at our cores is original sin, and instead I believe that at our cores we are beings of light. And as beings of light, we can individually and collectively emanate healing thoughts, rays of peace and love, eventually protecting our planet and enveloping our brothers and sisters in strength and comfort and indestructible happiness.

Photobucket

So today I light candles as a symbol of the flames of hope deep in my heart, as a symbol of my deepest prayers for all those who are suffering. My sincere wish is that they find comfort and love, and instead of turning toward the paths of bitterness and despair, that they uncover the warm healing glow that exists within all our hearts. And that they may have the fortune to have family and friends to ease the burden of their suffering, as I have found here. What a difference a week makes, and how very far I still have to go.

Photobucket

May the healing glow of fireflies touch your hearts, as you have touched mine.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

thanks newp (8.83 / 6)
this post for me was an extension (in my mind) of evos post the other day (the dog whisperer one).  I wish i was better at expressing my feelings in words, but i have always been un-eloquent.

These posts have made me think about what is missing in my life, and I DO think it must be that I have been living inside my mind instead of through my heart. I used to only live through my heart, when i was younger, and lost it somewhere.  When ana was injured I felt like if we could all just send enough 'happy thoughts' for her then surely she would be okay... and she was...

This, in turn, made me wonder about the possibility of sending happy thoughts all the time for everyone... I dont think it could hurt...
Call it whatever you want, prayer, happy thoughts, etc.. its all POSITIVE energy from the heart.

So I am doing my best to begin to live through my heart, every second of every day, and think happy thoughts for every being I know and also those I dont yet know, and maybe never will. Knowing a being is not a prerequisite for caring about them... So thank you again, for expanding a niggling thought/feeling for me....

[ Parent ]
you seem (10.00 / 5)
to say this very well.....

maybe your 'un-eloquence' is only how you perceive it?

i too thought i couldn't 'speak' well, share my thoughts & say what i mean...
after nearly 6 yrs of blogging... & having people tell me 'gha!' & gush about what i've said...well, i've lost some of my insecurity & have begun to feel more confident in my ability to express myself.

i've found when i write like i would speak not only is it easier for me but i can express myself more freely. 'speak' from your heart....

...its all POSITIVE energy from the heart.

you're absolutely right, and I think you're very, very eloquent! you're also right about evo's essay, it really moved me and was definitely in my mind when I was writing this. he has such a way of moving one's heart, inspiring, warming. so many here have that gift, and I think you have a "from the heart" way of communicating that's just beautiful. and I love what you wrote, "Knowing a being is not a prerequisite for caring about them", it's so true, so profound.

I promise to take real good care of our Ana, and I can't wait to send you pictures of her running and jumping!

Beautiful newp (8.71 / 7)
I'll light a candle here as well my brother.  With the cats I dare only light one.

What wonderful pics of Ana, Lourdes and Dolores.  They make a beautiful family together.  Can't wait for their new edition to join them.  :)

It's beyond me (8.12 / 8)
I got a headache trying to figure out what rating to give this.

[ Parent ]
It is different! (11.50 / 6)
I've been having trouble trying to rate some, but having fun with others.

I just wish they didn't have number ratings with them.  Newcomers at first will probably think we are really mean people, downrating all the comments.

There's a thirteen! (7.80 / 5)
Discrimination against Triskaidekaphobics like myself. We are not allowed to chew on it.

[ Parent ]
Yeah. Is it better (12.00 / 5)
to get a low rating or a high one? ARGH!!! However, I like #7, "You make fireflies dance." Figure that'll do until things get whittled down.

[ Parent ]
As long (12.80 / 5)
as you don't get a zero its fine.

I haven't looked at many of the ratings I've gotten yet.  Its an adventure just trying to figure out which one to use for each comment.  #7 is one of my favorites too, along with 10, 2, 4, 5, 12, and 14.

[ Parent ]
I can't wait either, sister (8.33 / 6)
and one candle's more than enough! words or pics just can't convey how happy I am our family is together, and Ana is on the mend. they sure look content too, huh?

now if Dolores would just speed things up a bit...

I'm begining to think Dolores is waiting to deliver on my birthday this Friday.  I had figured my niece might hit it, but I never thought Dolores would have a shot at it.

[ Parent ]
Friday, hmmmmm (8.60 / 5)
that would be wonderful!
just don't know if I could survive another 5 days  :O)

now I just gotta think of the perfect gift for my sister (besides the new baby)...

don't have to wait that long.  Maybe she's just holding out for my nieces (not the one thats pregnant)birthday.  Thats tomorrow.  :)  Lets hope she's not holding out for yet another nieces birthday, next Sunday.

Newp, you are a perfect gift everyday.  You share your heart freely.  Not many people can do that.  I think we have a pretty good family going on here.  Everyday is a gift at firefly.  But you know pics of your kids are always great presents.  ;)

with the new ratings but they make reading more fun, it was good of you to shake us up.  This really is a dreaming place.

[ Parent ]
gha! (11.25 / 4)
that one was easy to rate! I'm definitely no master, sweetie, but I'm glad that you felt what I wrote. gotta tell ya, Ria, this place takes all of us to such a special place so if anyone's in awe, it's me. I can't ever thank you enough for bringing your dream to life, and letting me be a part of it.

Newp: wonderful pics (12.17 / 6)
Ria: the new rating system makes my head hurt.  For now I'm alternating between "Brilliant" and "You make fireflies dance" with "Let me chew on it" for food comments.

And I still can't tell which is better, "Brilliant" or "You make fireflies dance."

But I adore "Let me chew on it" for food blogging.  (^.^)

Good morning, newpioneer! (8.80 / 5)
Thanks for sharing a beautiful post and beautiful photographs with us.  The photos of Dolores, Ana and the other horse are especially precious.  I love the top picture on your post, also.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

morning, Miki! (11.50 / 4)
err... good evening!! you're welcome my friend, and I'm always happy to share pics of my little family (I think they're precious too, but I guess I'm kinda partial!). please let me know how the bonding's going with your new baby - congratulations again!

[ Parent ]
Hi there, newpioneer! (14.25 / 4)
Thanks very much for your warmhearted reply and compliments, and your congratulations.  The bonding with my new baby Congo African Grey is going well so far.  The Grey is roughly two and a half months old (he was born on February 1st of this year), and, although he's still somewhat clumsy, he's getting less so.  S/he even succeeded in climbing onto my forearms briefly, which was OK, but his nails are long enough so that I got a little scratching from him.  He's so beautiful and sweet, and he also likes to beak my fingers, although he can do it abit hard sometimes, without realizing it.  He's just a baby and exploring me.  I talk to him, and, today, I even sat up near the front of the store with him, while he was in a basket, talking to him and scritching him.  So, I gave him several scritches for you and everybody else here on firefly-dreaming, newpioneer!

Good luck to you, Juan and the rest of your family, newpioneer.  Take care, all the best, and I'll talk to you and everybody else again soon.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]

How long do you have to bond before you get to take him home?

& have you considered wearing a leather or denim jacket so he can walk up your arm without scratching you?

Chaos? (14.20 / 5)
I think you depicted it quite adequately.

Knowing and appreciating "beauty" stays with us through thick and thin, thanks goodness!  Beautifully and artfully said, newpioneer!  Thank you!

The pictures are all wonderful, but I think we now have a very personal relationship with Delores, Lourdes and Ana -- so, of course, they are the winners of the photos!

Tahoe! (13.25 / 4)
the title of the opening graphic really should have a question mark, huh? I was drawn to it because it was a beautiful chaos, that even in the middle of a fierce storm there's beauty.

and yeah for Delores, Lourdes and Ana! I think they're the best too, but just imagine if I had the talent of Eddie or Knucklehead (sigh)

I really do need to learn how to use this camera  :o(

how are things going in your part of the world my friend?

do pretty good at it.

Lots better than I do at taking pictures.  Tahoe can vouche for that!

[ Parent ]
Delores, Lourdes and Ana, (13.80 / 5)
won the day because we are endeared by them and, despite whatever you may say, the photos are wonderful.  I, for one, had no problem with your photographic abilities, BTW.  Eddie C and Knucklehead?  Well, you know, they've been doin' this stuff for a long time, so they've gone beyond just "taking a picture" and have developed many dimensions to their photographs.  I think we'd all like to go there, at least a little bit, but it takes time and consistency!

[ Parent ]
Whoops! (14.25 / 4)
My neck of the woods?  That would be the Chicagoland area!  Our weather, as usual, fluctuates back and forth, so that one is never sure about one day from the next -- kinda' like our entire situation in this country -- which seems to worsen by the day!  A barometer, for me, is the fact that global warming is the most threatening of all issues, and, yet, we are now going to explore our coastal waters for oil?  We are going into the Artic, NARW, to explore some more?  It means that the existence of our earth, our animals, our sea life, our everything, is under threat, despite our cries -- over nine years long now.

You know, only profits matter.  Not the quality of our lives, the air, the future of our children -- nothing else matters!

[ Parent ]
the quest for profits... (14.25 / 4)
I'm so glad Edger is here with us, a couple of times he's shared a saying of the Cree People ~

"Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realize we cannot eat money."

how I wish this were a saying of the human race and that we had already turned the corner, making sure this outcome never comes to pass. it's almost mind boggling how even our democratic leadership has bowed to the interests of offshore and arctic drilling, almost - so much for even the pretense of being the party of sound environmental stewardship.

perhaps the uniting of individuals, environmental groups, non-governmental organizations and the U.N. will help turn the tide, I can't help but think it's our last hope no matter how slim the chances. we certainly can't count on political or corporate interests (to me, one and the same) to ever make a positive impact on our sustainable future. not as long as profits and campaign coffers are their bottom lines.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
Thank you, newpioneer! (14.25 / 4)
Did you know that the Bush Administration altered every single EPA report to suit themselves over their entire tenure?

Did you know, too, that we could have captured the windmill business here in the good ole' U.S. of A.?  But, no, guess who's doing the manufacturing of windmills?  China!  There's a guy in Indiana, set up to import the windmills parts and put them together, has employees lined up and has been waiting months to get bureaucratic clearance.  (I have his name somewhere.)

Global warming is happening at a much faster pace than even the scientists had prredicted.

The offshore and artic drillings planned are nothing but land grabs.  All of these companies already own a lot of land that could be exploited, in lieu of our coastal shores, etc.  But, beside that, we should be getting AWAY from oil, not continually seeking it.  And look here, it's the ruination of land and waters for, basically, nothing!

[ Parent ]
Their (14.25 / 4)
BS about clean coal gets to me too.  There's so many other directions we should be going.

I must say I loved the anti-clean coal commercials.  "Harnessing the power of the word clean" Said while they are spraying a black spray out of a aerosol can.

Our old friend OD1 posted a kos diary yesterday.  He's taking a leave to get built back up for the SCOTUS nomination fight.

[ Parent ]
I just went there and commented, Alma! (14.25 / 4)
I fear too late, OD1 signed out already.

I also got a word in to bleeding heart!

So, it was good -- thanks for the head's up!

[ Parent ]
Oh, and, yes, Alma, (14.33 / 3)
people REALLY need to understand there is NO such thing as CLEAN COAL! Evah!

[ Parent ]
unbelievable, Tahoe (14.25 / 4)
I didn't know about the EPA reports, or the windmill opportunities, but it's not surprising. heartbreaking, but not surprising. the frustration of the guy in Indiana must be unbelievable.

I do know that climate change is happening at a much faster pace, and the changes much more dramatic than previously believed... I'm slowly but surely going into the camp of those that believe our world is already beyond the point of no return, and we must do everything we can to prepare and survive what's to come. I hope I'm not being fatalistic, but thoughts of how friends and family are to survive in the coming century are more and more on my mind.

just the thought of us seeking more oil as the solution is exasperating... but I guess putting the magnanimous oil industry in charge of our energy future is no more far fetched than putting the benevolent insurance industry in charge of our health care future, or the compassionate war machine being in charge of our peaceful future. it's disgusting. these are definitely upside down times.

and your last line couldn't be more true.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
It's hard to keep from being negative about the global (14.00 / 4)
warming situation, pioneer.  With the "elite" mega-conglomerates doing everything to fight and all efforts at going "green" and so little being done to actually fight it, it's hard indeed.  The wars, apart from all illegality and horrors connected with them, are a huge part of pollution.  Just look at the oil consumption used by the U.S. Military, alone!

Nobody seems to care about the children!

[ Parent ]
Tahoe, I knew about the EPA (13.25 / 4)
reports.  I also knew that the USDA zone maps -- the ones that tell you whether plants will be hardy in your region -- were not updated during the Bush administration, even though the entire D.C. area is now Zone 7 (reported in the NYT a few years ago) and even where I am in south-central PA is almost certainly Zone 7 by now.  Zone 7 means the lowest winter temperatures are 0 degrees F.  Zone 6, which we used to be, can go to -10.

I don't think we've been below 10 above for a few years, and I don't know when we were last below zero (not counting wind chill).

The Shrubbies politicized the science whenever it was opposite to their belief system.  Don't like the facts?  Suppress them.

SCOTUS did a very evil thing when they placed him and Darth into power.

Yes, youff! (13.25 / 4)
Unfriggin' real, isn't it!  You want to tell me that there is NOT evil in this world?  (I'm just kidding, I know you know there is!)  We're watching it and that's the WHOLE GD problem.  The Bush Administration slanted everything and anything to and for their convenience -- and got away with it.  HERE IS THE PROBLEM!

The zoning for plants?  Hummmm!  That's interesting, I didn't know that.  Here is a map from Arbor Day Foundation.  It's kinda' hard to tell!  (Just colors!)  Is this map accurate?

Arbor Day

[ Parent ]
i think (14.00 / 4)
that is the most recent map... from 2006
there is another under our Resources: Gardening page
the USDA 2003 map (which hardly changed from the previous one)

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

[ Parent ]
That map looks about right, Tahoe, but (14.50 / 4)
I'm not an expert.

There was a site I went to back around 2005 that showed the changes but I don't remember the link (I followed a link from someplace like Kos or Crooks&Liars).  There's no code for what color equals what zone on your map...but I am assuming (by counting up from south Florida) that yellow = zone 7.  If so, then I am in Zone 7 according to that map.

Certainly we have some old magnolias around here: and magnolias shouldn't be able to overwinter in Zone 6.  One or two individual trees, yeah, maybe...but you drive around the county, there are a bunch of magnolias.

New York City is mostly Zone 7, too (one of the reasons I adore it!) and if you have some protection, you can grow figs there.  Maybe olives too, I'm not sure.

But I'm not looking forward to the kudzu that is inexorably moving here.

Hi, youff, and RiaD! (15.00 / 3)
Sometimes, I feel as though my "brain," such as it is, just can't take any more to inculcate.

Yep, Youff, we have "codes" for everything these days, none of which I am very willing to attempt to decipher!  Sick of this BS!

What I will say, though, is we need to stop "kvetch-ing" and DO SOMETHING!

Sometimes I feel like giving up, it's no use kinda' thing (it really becomes quite tiring, taxing over the many years -- but the "elistists" plan on just that -- to wear us down -- when you're worn "down," then, of course, you become the "subjects" -- this is WHERE we are headed!

[ Parent ]
I guess I sounded a (15.00 / 3)
little "kbitchy" here -- it was very late!  :)

But there is truth in there.  I've kinda' run out of "what to do" ideas in terms of our government -- I've tried everything, within legal means.  Heh!  Calling, faxing, e-mailing, writing LTE's, going to rallies, going to reps' offices, signing a gazillion petitions, etc., etc. Just like thousands of other Americans have done.  Doesn't matter.  They hear us, they simply ignore us!  I'd like to "gut" the lot of them, personally, except for a couple!

Speaking of global warming... (9.50 / 4)
The NYT Magazine does a medical story every week: patient comes in with weird symptoms, but what is it?

This week's story was sort-of directly related:

Dr. Ma was taking notes as the patient told his story, but when he mentioned this strange reversal of hot and cold, the doctor gasped. "I know what this is!" he shouted, interrupting the patient's story. "I know what this is!" And with that he ran down the crowded hallway to where the attending physician and senior resident were sitting. "He doesn't need a head CT! He has ciguatera poisoning."

Ciguatera poisoning comes from eating fish that has been contaminated with a toxin produced by an organism that grows on reef algae in some infested tropical waters. Because the toxin is stored in fat, its concentration increases as it moves up the food chain from the little fish who eat the tainted algae to the larger, predatory fish, like shark, snapper, grouper and barracuda, and from there to the human consumer. Unlike most other causes of food poisoning, this toxin is colorless and odorless and isn't destroyed by cooking.

snip

"Even before they told me, I knew it had to be the fish - the barracuda," the patient told me sadly. Barracuda has recently been identified as a common source of the toxin, and the C.D.C. now advises against eating the fish, especially when it's been caught in the Caribbean. These days ciguatera is not just a tropical threat. In the U.S., it has become one of the most common fish-related illnesses as the waters off the coasts of Florida, Texas, South Carolina and most recently North Carolina become warm enough to host these once tropical organisms.

newp, the Times has the BEST (15.00 / 4)
writers.  Not always the best reporters, mind you -- Judith Miller, anyone? -- but the writing is almost always extremely good.  Especially the columnists and feature writers, and news analysis, and...well, they routinely break major stories.

I get a lot of my breaking news by dropping by Big Orange: somebody there always knows what's happening & trumpets it.  But for deeper consideration, for me, it's the Times and The New Yorker.  I have a subscription to the latter & it's my only magazine.  The Times I buy at work: one of my coworkers said I could just read it, but...I also do the crossword puzzle.  In ink.  So I kinda have to buy it, and once it's bought, I read as much as I have time for.
