Readercon, and a Siren update

( - promoted by RiaD)

I'm at Readercon, a small SF/fantasy convention devoted to the written word rather than filmed SF/fantasy, fannish culture, filking, costuming, and so on.  I've been to a couple of panels (one good, one pretty much a fawnfest over an author who was touted as having written a groundbreaking book (gay heroes) even though one even more radical (gay/bisexual/polyamorous heroes) was written ten full years earlier.  I kept my mouth shut instead of asking for an explanation, which seemed to be more the fanboy interviewing the author moderator's fault than the author, because I wasn't there to provoke anyone, but man oh man, it wasn't easy AT ALL.

I also found myself feeling completely lost in the dealers' room.  Not only hadn't I read many of the books for sale, I hadn't even heard of the authors.  It was pretty discouraging in some ways, realizing that the field has passed me by to that extent.  :(

OTOH, Siren is doing pretty well.  Her appetite is good, she's walking with only a small limp, and she actually stood up on her hind legs and keenly observed the squirrels on the deck.  I'm taking it day by day, but so far, so good.

And now I'm off to the con again, possibly to meet up with Walter and his wife for dinner, possibly just to hang out.  There's a reading I want to go to at 8:00, plus a couple of parties, so I may or may not get back in time to post Books So Bad They're Good before midnight. However, it's written and queued at DKos, so never fear.....

Hey, Ellid! (16.00 / 2)
Read you there, and read you here.

I knew I'd heard of Readercon but couldn't quite place it.

A Kossack's quilt needs a few more messages: can you and your coterie at Readercon help?

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

Oh, and P.S.: (15.50 / 2)
Say "hi" to everyone I know there.  Hope you have a great weekend.

It is entirely too difficult to keep up with everything being published, even in a backwater of the field like sf/fantasy.

Had a great time (11.00 / 1)
Won a door prize from Cecilia Tan (yes!  I have smut!), hung out with my friend Walter and his wife, and generally enjoyed the heck out of myself.  Next year I hope to be on a panel - wish me luck!

It's good to hear (15.50 / 2)
Siren is maintaining pretty well.  May she stay that way for many moons.  Give her some scritchins for me please.

Consider it done (16.00 / 1)
Her leg is bothering her but her appetite is good and she's as loud as ever.  Thanks :)
