RiaD :: fer Fawkes Sake OCCUPY! Th 11.17.11 #2 (w/update w/o twitter)

[name redacted]: Interesting log: I watched thru the night as multiple Portland MSM covered the 11/13 raid on Occupy Portland. (foot note: declare this coverage as a MAJOR victory.) One after another, on every channel, reporters were sympathetic and impressed with the Occupiers, the democratic process, and the firm, non-violent response of Occupiers. There was awe and wonder in their voices. It was clear that being there, experiencing a Possible Other Way impacted them in important ways.
By the time the morning Nooz hit the air, the readers read the script about Safety, drugs, unwashed hippies...
But they had been there, they knew...
Sumptin good gonna come from this...
I hope we will all remember that in every word, action and attitude, we are the real advertisement for our perspective.
Who knows what magic moment changes the course of history...

Eighty-four-year-old activist Dorli Rainey tells Keith about her experience getting pepper-sprayed by the police during an Occupy Seattle demonstration and the need to take action and spread the word of the Occupy movement. She cites the advice of the late Catholic nun and activist Jackie Hudson to "take one more step out of your comfort zone" as an inspiration, saying, "It would be so easy to say, 'Well I'm going to retire, I'm going to sit around, watch television or eat bonbons,' but somebody's got to keep 'em awake and let 'em know what is really going on in this world."

I found your SC video w/Bender in the middle of one of those interminable jazz drum solos & of course had to turn off the music & watch -- what a great interview he gave!  Now I think I need to watch some of your other videos -- I missed most of what happened today, due to being at work, but did read a post by someone who was in NYC today and saw the cops drag a woman off by her hair.

Crazy-scary.  Y'know, I remember (back in the day) when the Philly cops were MUCH scarier than the NYPD.  (This was when Frank Rizzo was still the mayor.)  Now?  Not so much.  (Yeah, Philly: the only American city ever bombed by its own mayor:

Goode's tenure as mayor was marred in the spring of 1985 by the MOVE confrontation, in which police attempted to clear a building in West Philadelphia inhabited by a radical back-to-nature group whose members, under the leadership of founder John Africa, had long been a nuisance to the city by shouting slogans and statements from a megaphone at all hours, ignoring city sanitation codes and barricading themselves in houses when law enforcement came to enforce them. During the final assault on the building, the police dropped an improvised bomb made of C-4 plastic explosive and Tovex, an explosive gel used in underwater mining. This caused the house to catch fire, and ignited a massive blaze which eventually consumed almost 4 city blocks, killed 11 people, and left 240 people homeless.

OMG! Keith's interview w/Dorli (13.00 / 2)
is just wonderful!  She is SO inspiring.  Thanks for that, Ria: what a terrific find!  And, NO hiccups: is it just me (based on a very limited sample) or are his clips much smoother -- & easier to embed -- now that he's at Current?

Oh my. Cenk is right, of course. (14.00 / 2)
And yet...and yet...Bloomie is still so much better than Ghouliani ever was.  I have no doubt that the thugs NYPD would behave much more thuggishly if Teh Ghoul were still in office.

I also remember when Rudy 9/11 threatened to suspend the election "because the city needs me."

No, Rudy, we didn't.  The healing went much more quickly once you were outta there.  Don't let the door kick you in the ass.

We loved you about as much as we love being bitten by a swarm of mosquitoes...or wasps.

Bloomie?  Bloomie has succumbed to what usually happens to a NYC mayor in his third term (and only his money & influence bought him one: we have term limits, and he has illegally bought his way past the two-term limit).  Which is to say the whole reason NY mayors are restricted to two terms is b/c in their third, all this shit comes pouring through.  Sometimes it's corruption, sometimes it's arrogance, and as with Bloomie, sometimes it's a toxic combination of both.
