Open Thoughts: Two for Tuesday

by: Eddie C

Tue May 11, 2010 at 03:00:00 AM EDT

Guess who turns sixty-nine today. Happy birthday Eric Burdon. I hope he is not feeling too Blue.

And who can forget this classic?

Oh but he seems so young in both videos. The man seemed really young back when he first sang "When I Was Young."

I was gonna guess me... (15.00 / 4)
Or at least, that's how I feel this morning.

I still have 38 years until 69 (if I ever make it that far) myself, though.

Anybody wanna come over for some bacon and eggs and coffee?  I'll trade breakfast this morning for washed dishes...

;-P

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

gha! (15.00 / 4)
i wouldn't mind that!
if
it's not everydamndish in the house!

(pssst! when did you start eating meat again?)

A few months ago... (15.00 / 4)
A few months ago, or maybe even closer to a year?

Never made much of a deal about it, just like I never made much of a deal about my vegetarianism when I was one for those 4-or-so years...

My vegetarianism over the past few years was an ethical decision on our overall food system, but since I never bought into the whole vegangelical thing (for that matter, some who know me may even recall that I took particular joy in fighting The Angry Vegans at every turn whenever they showed up on certain dKos diaries over the years, &c.), it wasn't really that hard to switch back to eating meat on occasion.

I've always been able to square my conscience with omnivorism, even when I chose not to personally eat meat myself.  I just make sure I know where it comes from, and that it's been raised properly, just as I do with my fruits and vegetables.  This morning's bacon was from a local neighborhood butcher who sources their pork from an Oregon farm which is also a Portland farmers' market regular, of course...

:)

:(

sooooo....
i'm breaking away, trying a new way....
i'll drop by quickly in the morning, then not be back until after lunch- maybe later...
i simply must get up off my ass and get things done...

This is why... (15.00 / 4)
...I generally tend to disappear* from Teh t00bz between Monday and Friday, myself.

This week is gonna be a bit different though, since I'm mostly home-bound dealing with health crap.  It's okay though, I can catch up on some things I've missed lately...

;)

[ Parent ]
But all I need to do is get the Led out (15.00 / 4)

[ Parent ]
Speaking of which.... (15.00 / 6)
I've got to shower, shampoo, do my exercises, and then go visit the Grey.  Toodaloo, all.  Talk to you later!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Talk to you later (15.00 / 4)

I heard about that Grey;

[ Parent ]
Hi, Eddie. (15.00 / 3)
Thanks again.  I visited the Grey this afternoon, had lots of fun with it, as always, and one of the young women who works at the pet store and who's also an African Grey owner herself, put the cage together, and helped me pick out some toys and perches.  It's a beautiful cage, sandstone-colored, to match my house, and has extra-secure food and water dishes and an extra-secure lock for the door of the cage, as well.  The cage is also on casters, so it can be moved around.  I just have to buy food, a cage cover, and look into an air purifier.

I'm excited!  Thanks, Eddie C, and everybody else here on firefly-dreaming.  As part of the health guarantee policy of the pet store, I've got to make an appointment to have him/her checked out at a veterinarian, which I'll do as soon as I know the exact homecoming date for the bird.  All my neighbors, friends and family will be eventually invited to meet him!  Photos will eventually be posted here, hopefully!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
I noticed (15.00 / 3)
you used "him".  Were the results back or was that a generic "him"?

[ Parent ]
Hi, Alma. Unfortunately, no, the DNA-gender results for the Grey hadn't come back yet. (15.00 / 3)
The company that does the DNA-sexing of birds for this particular pet store tends to take a little bit longer with the African Greys, for some reason.  The young woman who helped me out today checked it a couple of times, and she thinks that the results should be out in the next day or two.  So, yes, when I used "him", it was a generic "him".  Thanks for asking, and for your interest and concern.  The homecoming date will be soon.  Stay tuned!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Its getting close mplo (15.00 / 3)
I'm so excited for you!  :)

Sounds like you got lots done today, with the cage and toys, so having to wait a few more days for the sex isn't a total downer.

[ Parent ]
Hey.....thanks, Alma!! (15.00 / 3)
This:

Sounds like you got lots done today, with the cage and toys, so having to wait a few more days for the sex isn't a total downer.

is very true...and a plus!

Watching "The Assassination of Richard Nixon"... (15.00 / 4)
Watching a movie this morning, The Assassination of Richard Nixon.

Second time.  I first watched this last year.

Great stuff.  If I had to sum the film up in a catchy phrase?

Brilliantly brutal.

At times, it almost hurts physically to watch this film.  And really, I'm not being sarcastic at all.  This is just 95 minutes of cringe-worthiness, in the best possible way...

Anybody else have thoughts on the film?

I think this is one of my favorites of the past decade, along with No Country For Old Men, The Wrestler and Gran Torino.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

I have a thought on The Assassination of Richard Nixon. (12.33 / 3)
Didn't the Bush administration claim "Nobody could have anticipated someone using a commercial airplane as a weapon" after 9/11?

My three from the previous decade are V for Vendetta, Definitely, Maybe and my number one movie for the century The Dark Knight.

Last night I watched Elmer Gantry for the first time. That is a damn good movie, especially considering the sociology of the time.

And OMG, Shirley Jones!

Who knew?

[ Parent ]
Although I've never seen "Assassination of Richard Nixon", (15.00 / 4)
I have seen No Country for Old Men (which was quite good, despite being somewhat sadistic), The Wrestler, and Gran Torino, all of which were cool movies.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Yea but.... (15.00 / 3)
V for Vendetta, Definitely, Maybe and The Dark Knight?

No Country For Old Men... (15.00 / 2)
Anton Chigurh - Greatest. Movie. Villain. Of. All. Time.

Seriously, who's ever screwing with him?

The gas station scene ("What's the most you've ever lost on a  coin toss?")?  One of the most amazing in American film over the past 20 or 30 years...

Anton Chigurh: What's the most you ever lost on a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: Sir?
Anton Chigurh: The most. You ever lost. On a coin toss.
Gas Station Proprietor: I don't know. I couldn't say.
[Chigurh flips a quarter from the change on the counter and covers it with his hand]
Anton Chigurh: Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Call it?
Anton Chigurh: Yes.
Gas Station Proprietor: For what?
Anton Chigurh: Just call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Well, we need to know what we're calling it for here.
Anton Chigurh: You need to call it. I can't call it for you. It wouldn't be fair.
Gas Station Proprietor: I didn't put nothin' up.
Anton Chigurh: Yes, you did. You've been putting it up your whole life you just didn't know it. You know what date is on this coin?
Gas Station Proprietor: No.
Anton Chigurh: 1958. It's been traveling twenty-two years to get here. And now it's here. And it's either heads or tails. And you have to say. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Look, I need to know what I stand to win.
Anton Chigurh: Everything.
Gas Station Proprietor: How's that?
Anton Chigurh: You stand to win everything. Call it.
Gas Station Proprietor: Alright. Heads then.
[Chigurh removes his hand, revealing the coin is indeed heads]
Anton Chigurh: Well done.
[the gas station proprietor nervously takes the quarter with the small pile of change he's apparently won while Chigurh starts out]
Anton Chigurh: Don't put it in your pocket, sir. Don't put it in your pocket. It's your lucky quarter.
Gas Station Proprietor: Where do you want me to put it?
Anton Chigurh: Anywhere not in your pocket. Where it'll get mixed in with the others and become just a coin. Which it is.
[Chigurh leaves and the gas station proprietor stares at him as he walks out]

Fucking awesome!

The Wrestler is probably my favorite out of the four, though.  Closely followed by Gran Torino, then No Country For Old Men and The Assassination of Richard Nixon...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Oh, and... (15.00 / 2)
Gangs of New York was a really good one, as well.  I kinda sorta wanna pencil that one in at number five.

I haven't seen the three Eddie mentioned myself, though...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Seriously (15.00 / 3)

V is where it's at!

[ Parent ]
I saw "Gangs of New York" (15.00 / 4)
and, having read the book, I think that the racial aspect of the conflict was greatly played down in the movie.

Dark Knight was cool, though

she had just started (14.50 / 4)
drinking cow milk (from a cup) & when the majik boy moved here i found a formula without soy (do you know how hard that is to do?) made by the Nestle company... they are searching for some now... & plan to add it to cow milk- much like "instant breakfast" - just to add the extra vitamins & stuff.

she's on a bunch of benydryl too, to bring the hives down (she whelped up all over)

i swear, if it's not one thing it's three others!

RiaDear: I am probably missing something (15.00 / 3)
well, I'm SURE I'm missing something: but why a sulfa drug?  And don't the docs usually ask if you're allergic first?  (Of course, if she never got a sulfa before she wouldn't know, but did they at least ask? )

But my real question is:  why not penicillin?  Or ampycillin? Or tetracycline?

Why go immediately to the sulfas?  That's just wrong.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

[ Parent ]
she's allergic to penicillin (15.00 / 3)
and they asked about sulfa, but she'd never had any...
(mrD's mom was also allergic to sulfas)
i dunno why they didn't give her a z-pack or whateverthehell they gave me a couple months ago...

i was a bit upset by the sulfas myself... because she's still breastfeeding.
& now... gha!

i'm just thinking happy thoughts for her.

[ Parent ]
oh, sweetie, yes, Happy Thoughts! (14.33 / 3)
Doctors...gha.  There are so many other options between penicillin and sulfa drugs.

What's wrong with tetracycline?  Or ampycillin? (though, she might be allergic to that also).

Heyzeus Priest, when the docs ask me about allergies & whatnot, (& I am lucky here) I make a HUGE point of saying "Penicillin works great for me.  I'm not allergic to Penicillin!  It's a great drug!"

Why do I do that?  I was once given a prescription for something...maybe a sulfa, don't remember...that gave me a yeast infection it took three OTC drugs & four weeks to get rid of.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

[ Parent ]
no shit! (15.00 / 3)
i do the same thing!!
i love penicillin & all it's derivatives- they work & they're cheap!!

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
OMG, Ria? (12.00 / 2)
That yeast infection...that was a dental issue: I was at the NYU dental clinic and my cheek was puffed out to HERE.  The student dentist wanted to give me penicillin.  The supervising doctor didn't think it would be strong enough.

When I went to the pharmacist, he came around from behind to the counter to say, "Have you ever taken this before?" no "In rare cases: here are the side effects: if you get one of these, stop taking it immediately.  yessir, and thanks for the warning.

I knew right then the student should have given me penicillin.  But it was too late.

So: no, none of the side effects my pharmacist warned me about: only the one he didn't: major yeast infection.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

[ Parent ]
i had that happen too (14.00 / 2)
but only once!
an old country doctor told me to eat 1/2 cup yogurt 3-4 hrs after taking any antibiotic... after every pill.
he said it would feed the good bacteria so the antibiotic wouldn't kill them off.
i've always done that since & never had any trouble!

~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
What a great idea. (13.00 / 2)
I've never needed to do that -- as long as I was taking penicillin or tetracycline.

Those don't give me any adverse reactions.

But I'll keep it in mind for the next time I can't persuade the doc to give me what I want.

BTW, the last time my cheek was swollen OUT TO HERE, the dentist just gave me a stronger prescription for penicillin.

Worked like a charm.  (^.^)

i eat the (10.00 / 2)
yogurt even when i hafta take penicillin.
just in case.

the doctor said there is no need to kill nearly all the good buggies... feed them so they will be strong & make you strong to, more able to fight infection!

he also was a great believer in eating sauerkraut (or the chinese stuff- kim-che?) at least once a week. he said that there is something in it helps your body- i forget what. so i try to do that too. sauerkraut & keilbasa sausage is a regular once a week meal here (usually wednesdays)

[ Parent ]
haha (11.50 / 2)
I make no claims for sauerkraut.  But kim chee is Korean & quite delicious: if you ever go to a Korean restaurant, kim chee is on the table as a condiment: you don't order it, it's just there.  Sorta like those big pickles in a good Jewish deli.  Or soy sauce in a Chinese restaurant.  Or ketchup anywhere Ronald Reagan needed a vegetable.

;-D
