**ACTION ITEMS**

PARTICIPATE: Locate Occupy Events in YOUR area--WORLDWIDE!!

PARTICIPATE THROUGHOUT THE HOLIDAY SEASON:
OCCUPY BLACK FRIDAY
Let's take a day that is all about consumption and make it our own, and let's make it loud and clear that we will not support the corporations that destroyed our economy and undermined our Republic.Instead of a "Buy Nothing Day" we'll have a "Buy Local Day." Instead of buying a bunch of useless crap, let's instead go out and help the poor. Volunteer at soup kitchens and host toy drives and do the other charitable things that the government refuses to do. A season of giving instead of a season of buying.

Here is a simple list of "Top Ten Ways to Occupy the Holidays" this year. Simplify your celebrations and use your consumer power to invest in your local community; remember we always vote with our dollar!

Please consider having a Buy Nothing Christmas  It's not really about refusing to spend a dime over the holiday season. It's about taking a deep breath and deciding to opt out of the hype‚ the overcrowded malls‚ and the stressful to-do lists. It's about reminding ourselves to really think about what we are buying‚ why we are buying it‚ and whether we really need it at all.

STAND UP by flobots

Stand up

We shall not be moved

Except By a child with no socks and shoes

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Stand up We shall not be moved

Except by a woman dying from the loss of food

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

We still don't understand thunder and lightning

Flash back to when we didn't fund the dam

Didn't fund the damn levy No wonder man

Now our whole damn city's torn asunder man

Under water but we still don't understand

We see hurricane spills over on the land

Through gaps you couldn't fill with a 100 tons of sand

No we still don't understand

We've seen planes in the windows of buildings crumbled in

We've seen flames send the chills through London

And we've sent planes to kill them and some of them were children

But still we crumble in the building

Underfunded but we still don't understand

Under god but we kill like the son of Sam

But if you feel like I feel like about the son of man

We will overcome

So Stand up

We shall not be moved

Except By a child with no socks and shoes

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Stand up We shall not be moved

Except by a woman dying from the loss of food

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

We shall not be moved

Except By a child with no socks and shoes

Except by a woman dying from the loss of food

Except by a freedom fighter bleeding on a cross for you

We shall not be moved

Except by a system thats rotten through

Neglecting the victims and ordering the cops to shoot

High treason now we need to prosecute

So Stand up

We shall not be moved

And we wont fight a war for fossil fuel

Its times like this that you want to plot a coup

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

So Stand up

We shall not be moved

Unless were taking a route we have not pursued

So if you've got a dream and a lot to do

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

if you've got a dream and a lot to do

Put your hands up

Now shake, shake

A Polaroid dream

nightmare negatives develop on the screen

We sit back and wait for the government team

Criticize they but who the fuck are we

The people want peace but the leaders want war

Our neighbors don't speak, peek thru the front door

House representatives preach "stay the course"

Time for a leap of faith

Once More

Put your hands up high if you havn't imagined

Hope that the pen strokes stronger than the cannon

Balls to the wall, Nose to the grindstone

My interrogation techniques leave your mind blown

So Place your bets lets speak to the enemy

Don't let em pretend that we seek blood

And who's we anyways Kemo Sabe?

Mighty warlord wanna-be street thug

a threat for a threat leaves the whole world terrified

blow for blow never settles the score

word for word it's time we clarify

We the people did not want war

So Stand up

We shall not be moved

Except By a child with no socks and shoes

If you've got more to give then you've got to prove

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Unless were taking a route we have not pursued

So if you've got a dream and a lot to do

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

I said Put your hands up and I'll copy you

Put your hands up and I'll copy you

if you've got a dream and a lot to do

Put your hands up

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

This is an Occupy issue (sort of) (15.00 / 2)
although I think the diarist slams Obama too hard:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

Why too hard?  B/c if you've been following Krugman & other coastal economists for the past decade, you know that the Chicago School of economists is firmly in the Bush camp.

Where is Obama from?  Chicago.

It's no surprise that he would hire "experts" probably rec'd by his colleagues there.  It's also no surprise that he doesn't have the economic chops one might wish for: he's an academic, but in law, with all its wishy-washiness, not in economics, where you have to be able to distinguish between the deranged and the sane.

The deranged are still winning, btw.  /rant

Anyway, ignoring the diarist's slams at Obama, the facts in the diary are well-presented and, well, factual.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

It strikes me that (15.00 / 2)
this is also Occupy-worthy, albeit from a slightly different stance:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

Oh, my, YES (13.00 / 2)
Ria, this one is only tangentially related to Occupy, except:

Here's what the 1% are trying to do:

http://www.dailykos.com/story/...

and here's how one judge responded:

[The Consent Judgment] is not reasonable, because how can it ever be reasonable to impose substantial relief on the basis of mere allegations? It is not fair, because, despite Citigroup's nominal consent, the potential for abuse in imposing penalties on the basis of facts that are neither proven nor acknowledged is patent. It is not adequate, because, in the absence of any facts, the Court lacks a framework for determining adequacy. And, most obviously, the proposed Consent Judgment does not serve the public interest, because it asks the Court to employ its power and assert its authority when it does not know the facts.

An application of judicial power that does not rest on facts is worse than mindless, it is inherently dangerous. The injunctive power of the judiciary is not a free roving remedy to be invoked at the whim of a regulatory agency, even with the consent of the regulated. If its deployment does not rest on facts - cold, hard, solid facts, established either by admissions or by trials - it serves no lawful or moral purpose and is simply an engine of oppression.

Finally, in any case like this that touches on the transparency of financial markets whose gyrations have so depressed our economy and debilitated our lives, there is an overriding public interest in knowing the truth. In much of the world, propaganda reigns, and truth is confined to secretive, fearful whispers. Even in our nation, apologists for suppressing or obscuring the truth may always be found. But the S.E.C., of all agencies, has a duty, inherent in its statutory mission, to see that the truth emerges; and if fails to do so, this Court must not, in the name of deference or convenience, grant judicial enforcement to the agency's contrivances.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

Did anyone here (13.50 / 2)
...eat cinnamon sprinkled on buttered bread for breakfast when they were a kid?

I did.

It's cinnamon and sugar mixed together, but I have no idea what the ratio of cinnamon to sugar should be.

And dagnabit, I'm hungry for some toast with cinnamon.

yes. yes i did (16.00 / 2)
we use 1 tsp cinnamon to 1 cup sugar.

i keep a salt shaker of cinnamon sugar on the table & put it not only on toast/bread, but also applesauce, shredded wheat, oatmeal....

Sweet! (pun intended) (16.00 / 2)
Thanks RiaD (and Alma) for your reply.

I'll be mixing some up soon. ;-)

[ Parent ]
I did too (16.00 / 2)
and my kids loved it.  Dale still occasionally makes the toaster version.

My favorite way to make it when I had the time for the clean up was in the broiler.  I buttered the bread added the sugar and sprinkled the cinnamon on top.  It only took a few minutes in the broiler and its much tastier than when you just toast the bread and then add the stuff.  The butter melts in giving you a softer yummier butter taste and the sugar crisps up some and is yummier to me.  But then you have to clean the broiler pan.  It doesn't make a big mess in the broiler, its just that the broiler pan is awkward to clean in my sink.
