Hiking (14.33 / 6)
Today, my wife and I did about 5 miles of "back country trails". We started in a woods, walking single file down a well-maintained path, the Dave Johnson trail. We took a left on the Boundary trail. The trail crosses a road, and I get a kick out of the stop sign on the trail (even though I know it's for cross-country bikers). We make our way up a gradual hill, mostly through trees, across a bridge, and a field where we can see into some people's back yards. One of them has a deer (or is it an elk?) statue in the back yard. They know the trail is there.

The Boundary trail reaches the highest point in the park. It's only 370 feet above sea level, and ironically enough it's on a short asphalt path/portion of the trail. As soon as we crossed the road we walk by a house and a HUGE dog comes out of nowhere to bark at us. It startles my wife, but I've "met" this dog before. He's a big sweetie. "You're a good puppy, aren't you?" and he walks back to the house. Oh, I met his owner, too. He's the one who told me about this odd path though the woods and along the creek.

We continue to follow the boundary trail, out of DE and into PA. Four tenths of a mile later we pass the old state border, redrawn with a different compass center point. (Did you know that about the northern tip of DE? It was drawn with a compass, centered on Wilmington.) We sat on the bench near there, for a few minutes.

The boundary trail ends on Yeatman station road. Well, it did for us, anyway. We took a left and headed to bridge out. It's only about a quarter mile down the road before we were back on trail, then another 1/2 mile or so to the bridge out spot.

There's a bench near the creek on a side trail. I got out the stove, pot, and coffee press. Freshly made, fresh roasted coffee, in the middle of nowhere. She likes that a lot. I don't think it sucks. Then I made a "Mountain House" lasagna. We had a nice lunch.

Much of the trail from here on is an old railroad right of way. I heard it's nickname, once, but can't remember it for sure. "Puff and toot"? I don't remember, except that I thought it was funny.

By the time we got back to the car our legs were tired. What the heck. At our age, that's a pretty good hike.

Last week we did the Chestnut Hill trail. It's about 3.5 miles. We had our coffee next to Pike Creek, then. My wife said that was her favorite trail.

Today, she said this trip was her favorite trail.

I can't wait to find the next one.

Oh yeah (14.83 / 6)
...the last bit of trail is called the Charles Bailey trail.

There's a pdf of the trail map here. We were at the North end of the park. Not all of the trails we were on are named on the map, and it's not accurate. For example, it shows a bridge where we had coffee, and I can assure you there's no bridge there. Yeatman Station road doesn't run near as long as it shows, either.

Chestnut Hill is at the south eastern edge of the park.

You know where I live (15.00 / 4)
If you're ever up this way, call me. We even have a spare bedroom. I'd LOVE to take you out where we were today. Chestnut Hill is nice, but it's near roads and you can hear cars. Where we were today is so quiet. Last time I saw deer, but not today. We did see a redheaded woodpecker up close. Lots of squirrels. One section is like a "tree tunnel". It was nice and shady. There are lots of "back country bridges", too. There was a smell in the field (grassy) that I can't identify. It's not "bad", but it's not "flowers", either. Maybe you'll recognize it?

We didn't run into anyone today until near the end. Some students from UD were banding birds to study them. Wait, I kind of lied. While we were having coffee a guy came in from the PA side of the creek to fish. We didn't talk to him. He was sort of far away, and solitude can be a good thing, too. Last time, I met the guy who owned the dog. He was really nice. Later, I met a lady who used to work in a similar industry to what I used to do. I talked to her for quite a while. She said she's out there year-round. She cross-country skis it, in Winter.

I think you an my wife would be great friends. Honestly.

If you like being outside I'm SURE you'd like White Clay Creek State Park. There must be 60 miles of trails there. I haven't been down 1/4 of them, yet. But I'll have time, this summer. ;->

Brrrrr made me laugh, but (9.75 / 4)
...it was 72, sunny, and low humidity, today. PERFECT day.

The South is too hot and humid for an ol' South Dakota boy like me.

Reminds me of a joke...

A guy from SD dies and goes to hell. When he gets there he says, "This ain't bad. It's like SD in June!"

So the devil turns up the thermostat.

"Feels like SD in July, now!" he says, smiling.

Up goes the thermostat to max.

"I remember one August that made this feel like being in a freezer."

He and the devil go to bed. The devil is pissed.

The devil gets up in the middle of the night and sets the thermostat to freezing.

The guy from SD wakes up, shivering, and says...

Can you guess?

"What, did the Vikings win the Super Bowl?"

Where ARE you? (9.00 / 4)
When you wrote PA, it sounded like, well, PA -- Pennsylvania -- to me.  And it's not that cold here.  Well, compared to MN or MT or MI or all those states abutting Canada.  Not my part of PA, anyway: my county abuts the Mason-Dixon Line, and MD.  Where I'd like to move if there were more jobs and fewer ticks.

I'm just south of Newark, DE, now (15.00 / 4)
But I was born and raised in SD.

Sounds like we're practically neighbors. I hiked part of the Mason-Dixon Trail a couple of months ago. I haven't picked up a tick yet, this year, but Lyme disease IS rampant around here.

[ Parent ]
Before Lyme Disease (9.00 / 3)
we visited my cousins near Aberdeen.  I came home with a tick in my ear.  Not fun.  Uncle used to use lit cigarettes to make 'em back out of his kids' skin...but Uncle was in Aberdeen & I was in PA by then.

Some things you never forget.  I have had a horror of ticks ever since: and that wasn't a deer tick, it was the usual kind of tick.

I recharge (11.50 / 4)
watching animals, having dinner with my family, or a nice long bath with a book.   Firefly can recharge me too.  :)

(^.^) (14.67 / 3)
nice long bath with a book is a favourite of mine.....
or else candle & a glass of something yummy

In Ephrata, there's a store (12.00 / 3)
called 10,000 Villages.  It's Mennonite-run: they pay the villagers fair wages for their work.  I have a candle holder from there.  It's alabaster, shaped like a brandy snifter (without the stem) and I put tea candles in it.  Absolutely beautiful.  If you & MrD ever come up this way, I'd take you there -- you'd love it!  Also take you to this (I think) Mennonite farm out that way that grows their own saffron.

I don't know where Timbuk3 is, but my part of PA isn't much colder than D.C.

Honestly? (13.33 / 3)
Mid-week, it's a combo of beer & fireflies.  Anything by Eddie (yo, Eddie, where have you been?) or, like last night, HinH's underwater photo diary at Orange, or Rusty's blog, or, well, really, anything that makes me smile & forget for a moment the epic clusterfuck that is happening in the Gulf.

The Gulf is dead.  Kiss it good-bye for the rest of our lifetimes.  Gha, I hope I'm wrong about that...but I don't think I am.  That's why I can't bear to read about it too much.

Dear newp provided me with today's escape: I finally had a chance to watch all his Golden Girls clips.  That was wonderful!

:O) (13.67 / 3)
I never get tired of watching them, no matter how many times I've seen all the episodes. but, can't believe I didn't see 'what's your favorites' 'til this morning! during Juan's chemo week, I gotta get up a 4 to take care of the herd before spending the day at the hospital, and then clean and feed again when we get back home... so I crashed early and missed the fun, dang it!

today we're staying home 'cause J's been yawning in technicolor all morning and he just said "fuck it"... well, he actually said, "que se joda"  :o(

so I'll get into one of my favorite ways to recharge... built shit! I love re-purposing stuff and building things... anything! today I'm gonna be trying to build a table, sorta like a buffet, but to use for our altar. I figure that trying to make improvements to our meditation space is as good a way as any to deal with all the awfulness going on... well, besides meditating  :O)

Ria this ia a beauty (13.75 / 4)
and a reminder to recharge.  I get so busy doing doing checking off the list. When I am working in the yard I feel recharged, when I am creating, when the day is done and I stop doing, a bath and a book like Alma, taking the dogs for a walk in the woods, all of the above you listed and getting together with girlfriends.

The best burgers ever from Pioneer Woman's website.  Mine was a veggie but the boys got the real deal.  Mix the hamburger with salt, pepper and Tabasco sauce make into patties put on grill.  Same time cook sliced red onions with a tablespoon of brown sugar in a fry pan. Toast whole wheat bun on the grill then you pile on mayo (that has been mixed with Tabasco) your meat, the caramelized onions, blue cheese and some lettuce.  Serve with oven baked fries.  The boys were singing, music to my ears, happy tummies.

O! (14.75 / 4)
Pioneer Woman's site makes me happy.

It's too photo-intense right now: crashes my music.  But eventually I will buy a new radio & then I can go back there.  PW makes this firefly glow so much brighter!
