Medical studies show cannabis effective for treating pain, spasms
With the results of a medical study summarized by a new report delivered to the California state legislature, the California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research (CMCR) claims it has established scientific proof that inhaled cannabis holds medical value at or above the level of conventional prescription medicines used for a variety of ailments.

"As a result of the vision and foresight of the California State Legislature Medical Marijuana Research Act
(SB847), the CMCR has successfully conducted the first clinical trials of smoked cannabis in the United
States in more than 20 years," the group said in the study's conclusion summary. "As a result of this program of systematic research, we now have reasonable evidence that cannabis is a promising treatment in selected pain syndromes caused by injury or diseases of the nervous system, and possibly for painful muscle spasticity due to multiple sclerosis."

This is important news! Good news!! Please go read the entire article.
The fact that they are doing scientific studies - for the first time in twenty years - is a huge step in the correct direction, imho.

"Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any
measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care."~DEA Administrative Law Judge, Francis Young,1988
**PDF WARNING** Marijuana Rescheduling Pamphlet

If scientists will continue to research and publish their results we will soon be looking at rewriting &/or rescinding these ridiculous laws.
**PDF WARNING**Smoke Screen: America's Drug Policy and Medical Marijuana

Marijuana, or marihuana (Cannabis sativa), has been used medicinally for over
5,000 years
, recognized by U.S. physicians for its medicinal value as early as 1840, and
included in the United States Pharmacopoeia as a treatment for lack of appetite until
1942.

Marijuana use in the United States was not regulated by the federal or state governments until California prohibited its possession or sale in 1915. Virtually all of the states followed California's lead by the time the federal government, in a move opposed by the American Medical Association (AMA), initiated its first attempt to "tax [marijuana] out of  existence" with the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937.
In 1951, the Boggs Act established mandatory prison sentences and significant monetary fines, penalties which subsequently were strengthened by the 1956 Narcotic Control Act.

The CMCR study found:

'There is good evidence now that cannabinoids (the active compounds in the marijuana plant) may be either an adjunct or a first-line treatment for ... neuropathy,' said Dr. Igor Grant, Director of the CMCR, at a news conference at the state Capitol,'" according to Salem-News. "He added that the efficacy of smoked marijuana was 'very consistent,' and that its pain-relieving effects were 'comparable to the better existing treatments' presently available by prescription."

While the dangers of smoking remain, a study published by the Journal of Pharmeseutical Sciences in 2006 showed that inhaling vapors from the cannabis plant, created by flushing heated air through a small chamber, is a "safe and effective" mode of transmission for the drug.

& just btw~ this study was done in Leiden, the  Netherlands!

Another thing that I've heard and read is (8.00 / 3)
that marijuana can also be an excellent way to control epileptic seizures for people who've not been able to be put under control through conventional medicine, or even surgery.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

yes (8.00 / 3)
it's medical uses seem varied and nearly infinite.
it's a shame that paper company moguls bribed congress to outlaw it's use.
so much could have been discovered, put to use, loooong before now.

I keep hoping (4.00 / 2)
they will prescribe it for my hubby.  I think he would benefit immensly.  But I don't know if it would make his vertigo worse, and possibly make him fall more.  He fell in the restaurant parking lot last night.  The handicapped spots were filled and we had to park farther away than normal.

O my! (8.00 / 1)
is he okay?
could you drop him by the door & then park? or does he need your help to get in?
i've often thought that benches should be mandatory outside & inside restaurant entrances, for just this type situation.

ummm.... it never made my vertigo worse. in fact i would move more slowly & get my balance better. i haven't partaken in several mumble... it's very expensive, hard to get & with my COPD- well, it's rare for me anymore. dammit. :(

He's fine Ria (8.00 / 2)
Thanks for asking.

He falls quite often.  Usually I can catch him and steady him, but last night me and our boy were both in front of him.  Bad call on our part.  I have injured my back a time or two catching him.

Our usual parking at the restaurant is right by the door.  He drives so I couldn't drop him off.  Even if I was driving he would refuse to let me drop him off.  He's a stubborn cuss and it was really hard to get him to use even a cane.  We can't even get him to use one of the motorized carts at stores. I wish he would at least use a walker, but no Mr. Maccho guy won't do that.

The restaurant owner was talking about 3 weeks ago about getting a bench for outside when the restaurant smoking ban goes into effect so his customers will have someplace to sit for their after dinner smoke.

I don't think its possible for my hubby to move slower than he does now.  A 90 year old man moves quicker.  Thats the hard part to watch because he used to be so healthy and quick.

His cousin got into the weed business here.  I think her license is for finding growers for clients so if its prescribed for my hubby we should be able to find a grower relatively easy.

[ Parent ]
Ria maybe (8.00 / 2)
you guys could get a license to grow for medical clinics when it is legal to prescribe in your state.

This issue has always pissed me off.  Just think of the trees that could be saved by growing weed to make paper.  It has so many uses besides medical. Times a wastin' with this crazy war against weed.  People in jail need to be released and our tax dollars need not be spent criminalizing a useful substance.

good idea (8.00 / 2)
except you forget we live in SC. we'll be the next to last state to legalize... just before mississippi.

Where I live (8.00 / 3)
pot is de facto legal.

And, in fact, I recently purchased a new toy!

This is a vaporizer much like the one that I recently bought.

It's, of course, much better for your lungs because you do not inhale any actual smoke, just the THC.

The high is also significantly different.  I'm not sure that it's better, but it's cleaner and more of a mind-buzz, you might say.  It can also offer a more intense experience.

Fun stuff!
