Open Thoughts- Monday once again for our mother

by: Kathleen

Mon Jun 21, 2010 at 00:00:00 AM EDT

This is one of the last songs that Michael Jackson wrote and sung, it was for the earth.  What ever your thoughts are on Michael Jackson there is no denying he was very talented.  I saw him as a troubled, yet lover of the world which were reflected in so many of his creations.

In this powerful work he is expressing the earth's anguish at her destruction. He sang it in the movie, This Is It, footage taken as he prepared for his last world tour that never happened.

Kathleen :: Open Thoughts- Monday once again for our mother
His lyrics:

"Earth Song"

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

What have we done to the world
Look what we've done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah
Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

Hey, what about yesterday
(What about us)
What about the seas
(What about us)
The heavens are falling down
(What about us)
I can't even breathe
(What about us)
What about apathy
(What about us)
I need you
(What about us)
What about nature's worth
(ooo, ooo)
It's our planet's womb
(What about us)
What about animals
(What about it)
We've turned kingdoms to dust
(What about us)
What about elephants
(What about us)
Have we lost their trust
(What about us)
What about crying whales
(What about us)
We're ravaging the seas
(What about us)
What about forest trails
(ooo, ooo)
Burnt despite our pleas
(What about us)
What about the holy land
(What about it)
Torn apart by creed
(What about us)
What about the common man
(What about us)
Can't we set him free
(What about us)
What about children dying
(What about us)
Can't you hear them cry
(What about us)
Where did we go wrong
(ooo, ooo)
Someone tell me why
(What about us)
What about babies
(What about it)
What about the days
(What about us)
What about all their joy
(What about us)
What about the man
(What about us)
What about the crying man
(What about us)
What about Abraham
(What was us)
What about death again
(ooo, ooo)
Do we give a damn

Aaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaah

Talk about the Killing Fields!  Check this out:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

He spent 20 or so years in armies, beginning as a child soldier conscripted by the Khmer Rouge.  Then he began a second career as someone who disarmed land mines (some of which he probably set) at Angkor Wat and elsewhere.  Oh, just read the whole thing: it is a totally wonderful true story.

He finds the land mines with a stick, and disarms them with a penknife.  (Yes, he was trained...but when the U.N. trainers left, he didn't have the protective suit & all the technology, so he did it with what was available to him at the time.)

Really, go read it.  He's a hero.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

This, indeed, is a thought-provoking story, so I gave it a 5, since I didn't know what kind of rating to give it. (14.50 / 4)
This guy was/is a hero, but boy is he lucky that he didn't blow himself to bits in the process!  While we're on this subject, I remember seeing a documentary film called "Killing Fields", which is about the Khmer Rouge's ruling over Cambodia and  their atrocities, but what many, if not most people fail(ed) to (or cared) to realize is that the United States, too, was responsible for this mess.  My friend and I were on the edge of our seats the whole time!  That's  how intense the film was!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Interesting Miki (13.00 / 6)
I will have to watch for that one.  Here are 2 more good ones.

Over the weekend we watched 2 documentaries, The Confessions of a Economic Hit Man.  I read the book a few years ago but seeing it on film was very powerful. Anyone who knows about this book or seen this documentary will understand the shocking truth about what this country has been doing for years to help big corporations go into 3rd world countries and take their natural resources for our gain.

Then another we saw last night about free speak in this country, which we think we have.
It was chilling.  There was a segment about Ward Churchill, a Colorado professor who had the nerve to write a paper after 911 on why we are hated, raising some very ugly question about the US.

It is called, Shouting Fire Stories from the Edge of Free Speech.

Miki: This one is NOT a documentary (12.25 / 4)
but I think you might enjoy it anyway.

Leaving Rangoon

It's a story about the situation in Burma, known now as Myanmar, during the 1980s (if memory serves).  I think it's based, at least partly, on a true story: again, if memory serves, there was a French photojournalist there who got someone to smuggle out his film of the government atrocities.

Anyway, the atrocities aren't faked.  It was a terrible time to live in Burma, and the current government (a military junta) is, I think, even worse.

But it's a terrific movie.  Oh: and it's not a recent film (again, think late '80s or early '90s) so you can rent it or Netflix it or whatever.  I saw it on cable, back when I had cable, and was transfixed enough to watch it several times.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

But if you watch it (10.60 / 5)
maybe you should put Aziza to bed first.  It's too scary for a small child.  ;-D

Amazing story (14.00 / 4)
Youff!  He not only is a hero of his people he is a healer of the earth!  What is so shocking to me is the huge numbers of these bombs.

Thank you for the link.

Regarding the use of disinfectants to clean Aziza's cage once a week to ten days: (0.00 / 0)
I have read/heard a number of suggestions for alternatives to conventional disinfectants, since they're definitely not safe for pets (especially birds, due to their sensitive respiratory systems), nor, for that matter, are they that great for humans and the environment, generally.  7th-Generation disinfectants, although considered safe for humans, aren't things that I'd want to use on Aziza's cage, nor would I want to use a bleach-water combo, due to fumes from both of those things.

I have read, both in books and online about alternative disinfectants to use for Aziza's cage however.  Water and plain white vinegar is one possibility, although the stench of vinegar, which would lurk around for sometime, is not too pleasant.  32 ounces of plain water, with one drop of grapefruit seed extract per ounce, is yet another possibility, but I'm not really willing to spend $15.00 on a 3-inch tall 2-ounce bottle of the stuff.  So, I've decided to go by something that I read about online.  The recipe for a natural, non-toxic disinfectant for Aziza's cage that I found online is as follows:

3 cups of hot water

3 Tbsp. of baking soda

2 Tbsp. of pure lemon juice.

Put the three cups of hot water in an empty spray bottle specially designated for a disinfectant.  They can be bought at a hardware store or a market, or pet store.  Add the baking soda and then the lemon juice.  Shake the spray bottle full of the homemade disinfectant thoroughly to mix it up.  Spray with a fine mist on the cage and whatever else needs disinfecting.

Then rinse by spraying the cage or whatever with regular, clean tapwater, and wipe dry.

This is much safer than conventional disinfectants, but I'll still put Aziza in her carrier while I'm doing this.  Another small way to protect the environment, one's pet, and oneself.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.
