i am afflicted by all of these. have been all my life.
but lately....
lately it seems to come on easier. it takes less & less to throw me back into that state.
maybe it's because i started paying attention to what's going on in the world
(& gha! i just can't believe the insanity that passes for knowledge)

used to be i could start a sewing project, a new book or go play in the garden & find my zen.
not so much any more.

i need to find some

so i'm asking for ideas.....help

my favorite motivation... (12.80 / 5)
is staying as busy as possible ~ to not leave a single blank page in my life's journal.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

I suffer from (14.50 / 4)
all the same problems.

I can sometimes change the mood with music or animals and nature, but the getting motivated seems to be beyond me now.

It was easier when the kids were little because there was always stuff that had to be done.  Now not so much...sigh

yes (14.00 / 4)
somehow doing the dishes or sweeping is now a big effing deal...
& i think of how much i used to accomplish.....
& get more depressed.

Hope (12.60 / 5)
As bleak as things are, we have to keep our sense of hope alive.

This site actually helps me: newp's new babies, for example.  And the gardening & cooking diaries.  It provides just a little bit of sunshine in the daily grind.

Also, historically, I look at the way the populace swings from conservative to liberal to conservative etc. etc.  I think we're at the nadir of the conservative swing & going back to liberal again.

Unfortunately, these swings take decades to really take hold.  So while it's rough for us your kids & grandkids may have an easier time of it than we have had, coming of age in a time when the pendulum swung away from everything we think is good and just.

Hope that helps a tiny bit, Ria.

When all else fails (13.40 / 5)
I drink (or something) and numb out but you can't stay numb forever.

This is what helps me........

1.  It helps me to work, like Newp if I keep busy it frees my mind and helps with problem solving. Being creative, I woke up this morning realizing how I was going to repair the stone steps so I know I find solutions in my sleep.

2.  It helps for me to think there is a reason a lesson to get in everything that happens to force the consciousness to a new level.

3.  It helps to realize that it is more painful because I care and I would rather live in this pain than to not care.

4.  It helps to realize the pain is because we get it and are forced to watch the actions of those that don't........ yet.  To watch everyday the insanity of those that don't.

5.  It helps to know your not alone and that firefly is here attracting those that get it.

6.  It helps to realize that humans may not survive the destruction we are doing but the earth will the mother will live on.

7.  It helps me to always stay in solution of the what ifs, learn from those around me as we struggle to find a way to survive. This gives me hope.

8.  It helps me to always look into the future when each blow comes always looking ahead because I can't change what is done.  Learn learn learn and move forward.

9.  It helps when shit happens to allow a moment of grief and then move through it.  Remembering there are people I love that depend on me and there is work to do.

10.  It helps to feel the love around me from my pets to my family and know nothing else matters but the love that is in the world.  It is the only thing that is real to me all else is an illusion.

I don't see any reason (14.00 / 3)
to not cross-post it.

If you have time for it, go for it!  :)

Forgot to say (10.33 / 3)
Way to go!

Its fantastic that you got so much done.  Getting motivated is the hardest part.

[ Parent ]
I'm with Alma: if you feel like it (11.00 / 3)
then yes, post it at dd.  I haven't been there much lately b/c it's almost too intense (read: depressing).  Also I seem to have trouble being really active at more than two sites at once.  So I'm mostly here & at Orange, at least for now.  (It doesn't help that this new/used computer came without all my bookmarks, lol.)

Shit: talk about motivation!  I had exactly two pairs of slacks suitable for work, although the khakis (the cooler, more comfortable pair) were getting a bit frayed around the bottom of the pant legs.  Well.  I was restocking the walk-in cooler on Tuesday when a bit of metal from one of the shelves grabbed the butt of my khakis & ripped them.  Not a huge rip, and luckily the hole was covered by a rear pocket: but now I have to go get a new pair.  And do laundry.  And the kitchen needs an overhaul.  And all the floors need a thorough mopping.  And it's hot, and I hate housework!  I have always aspired to make enough $$ to hire someone to clean up after me.  Alas, I never quite made it there & now I'm not even close.

I got the khakis at Wal-Mart years ago but was thinking of going to the mall for the new ones: I hate giving Wal-Mart any money.  But they really were nice pants....

Hey Ria (15.00 / 4)
Good for you for getting stuff done, I always feel better when I get stuff done then it isn't glaring at me like a mad dog. I thought about this all day yesterday.

I have fought depression all my life, on and off anti-depressants for 20 years.  The tools I listed in the other post are what save me now.  In the beginning to get by I learned to fake it out in the world, no one ever knew what was really going on inside.  I realize now looking back that there were many causes, life events and not having the tools to deal with it.  Three years ago I was diagnosed with Hep C, it was the biggest shock, I had no idea it was ravaging my body, I stopped taking all meds at that point because of my liver. I was on antidepressants, blood pressure and heart meds. Doctors warned me to not go off the meds and my blood pressure went wild but I said fuck it I am done with these meds they say I have to take ALL MY LIFE!!!  I think now one of the things the Hep C was causing was depression.  I am one of the lucky ones because chemo worked for me and I have been Hep C free for over a year.  Now my blood pressure is under control with exercise and diet.  I don't even worry about it any more.

So my point here is I think often depression is caused by ill health, other things going on in the body. I don't think doctors ever tie the two together it is as if depression is located in a separate body or something. It makes since when life throws you a curve ball like what is happening in the gulf and never ending war, I think the whole world is depressed but for chronic depression I think other physical issues can cause it, no only just being sick is depressing enough but the actually illness throwing the body out of balance.

Now with the Hep C gone coping is so much easier, depression I can deal with now, fatigue gone, unexplained body pains gone, head is clearer.  So many symptoms you just learn to live with that I didn't realize (and doctors don't realize) was all connected to illness.

The main thing is to not beat yourself up with the shoulds,  "I should be able to shake this" no your body is speaking to you, it is a gift, a piece of the puzzle.

Hi Ria, (14.00 / 5)
As you may not be surprised to learn, I fall into this, as well.

Ennui is a good word.

Socializing almost always gets me out of that.  Even kicking back with Laurie and a glass of wine, chit-chatting about this or that, helps a lot.

In terms of motivation, what I try to do on a nightly basis is make a list of what I want to accomplish on the following day... along with a side list of longer term things that I need to accomplish or consider.

I don't always do everything that I put on my little lists when I should, but it helps me to prioritize, which also helps me to get motivated.

And then, of course, there's pot!

:O)

It definitely, for me, at least, has a way of getting the wheels turning.  It turns me into a free-associating chatterbox... which, you have to admit, is much, much better than ahnweeee.

Cheers!

Oh yah. (12.67 / 3)
Awesome indeed.  You can tell that was done in NYC by the reaction of the audience.  Here?  It'd make the fp of the local paper.

haha (10.33 / 3)
B/c of where I work, I know some cops...and some of them, especially this one guy, is really nice.  I bet he would LOVE to be in on an Improv Everywhere thing:  not that he would actually be IN the video, just that he would know about it and not arrest anyone.
