Open Thoughts Friday

by: JayinPortland

Fri Jun 25, 2010 at 04:32:00 AM EDT

Friday morning.  Computer slow here.  Near its end.  Bit the bullet, and I will finally have wireless set up in the ole' apartment today.  Should be able to finally switch over to my new (old) laptop in a few hours if all goes according to plan.

That means I can maybe post a photo diary later today!  And harass youze with music videos in my Friday posts again.

We'll see how things go.  I'll know one way or the other by about 2 PM.  Pacific.

What are youze all up to this weekend?

Hi Jay (15.00 / 5)
Good to hear you are getting an upgrade.  :)

Hmmm, this weekend, trip to vet, taking alternate route to daughters work because of the classic car cruise that takes over my normal road, and weeding, lots and lots of weeding.

hey Jay! (11.00 / 5)
harass away! can't wait for your photos and cool tunes!!

still trying to battle the rain here (losing badly), but I'll be spending lots of time in the barn with our new babies - and preparing for a monster storm heading our way!

YIKES!

hope you get everything shored up & battened down before that hits!

we're getting there! (8.67 / 6)
it only takes me a couple of hours to board up all the windows and doors, but I don't have much hope for the barns if there are really high winds with what's coming... can you imagine the house with ALL the animals inside!!!

[ Parent ]
What are they forcasting? (10.80 / 5)
Do they say how high the winds will get?

I am visualizing the barn standing, STANDING STRONG!

If it comes down contact the news paper and tell your story about rescuing animals and about just having babies.  Loving animals is universal (non-political) and maybe a fund could be started to build a new and better barn.  Maybe lots of people would come forward to help.

right now the forecast (11.60 / 5)
is for 10 days of thunderstorms. we're all hoping that the system to our right does not develop further. what's most worrying is the tropical low developing south of Cuba, and could head for the Gulf.

if a hurricane does threaten, then I'll stable the horses and goats with my neighbor who has a concrete barn, and the rabbits will come in the house with us. our barns are only pole barns with zinc roofs... but I'm with you completely in visualizing everything standing strong!

the main thing I want to convey is that we NEVER take any tropical storm lightly, and we've learned thru years of experience to prepare for the worst - no tempting Mother Nature here! so please don't worry!!! and if this year's hurricane season is a bad as predicted, then I'll definitely figure out a way to communicate with you all before, during and after so that there's no anxiety.

yay fer upgrades! (13.60 / 5)
i need to clean off my computer.
the kids e-mail me pictures & little videos of the majik boy & princess.
i really need to put those on a jump drive so i can always have them even if the computer crashes...
but gha! i hate doing that mindless type shit.. moving files from here to there.

mrD's cousin(s?) is coming sunday to play gee-tar. i'll be cooking busketti & garlic bread.

our girl, the princess & her daddy will also be coming sunday. he has vacation & they're going camping in the mountains, dropping off their dog here on the way by.
it should be really interesting. this is their first vacation w/baby & she's walking but not big enough to really go hiking yet. they say they'll be gone until friday. we'll see.

and i'm still fooling with plums. some had to sit to ripen further before i could turn them into juice for jam. hopefully this weekend will see the last of the plums!

Weighing in on a Friday: (14.00 / 5)
Good luck with your new computer installations, JayinPortland.  Hope it all goes as planned!

I'll be going out to dinner with a former co-worker and friend of mine at a local seafoods restaurant this evening.  I'm looking forward to that.

I had another one of my neighbors over to see Aziza.  She loved her.  Although Aziza ruffled her feathers and growled at my neighbor at first, she got used to my neighbor, who didn't take it personally.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Baby Aziza probably just (14.60 / 5)
needs a bit more time to acclimate to new people.  She's a doll, Miki!

Thanks, Youff! (15.00 / 4)
You're right.  She does need more time to get used to new people.  I'm glad I bought her  as a baby, and not when she was considerably older.

Glad you like her.  :)

And we're on! (14.00 / 6)
Okay, wow.  this feels... different.

After over a decade on ancient desktop PCs, it's gonna take a bit of getting used to be comfortable on my Macbook.  Wow, I feel like the Ultimate N00b!

I now live in a Wireless World.

;)

Photo diaries may take a day or four, heh.  I have to get used to this keyboard first!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

w00t! (14.50 / 4)
yay for YOU!!

I'm so jealous... (15.00 / 4)
A friend of mine went from a PC office to a job where everyone had Macs.  She said it took her about a day to learn the program.

Meanwhile, I knew lots of others who were Mac fiends.

But I've never had the $$$ to go there.  So I'm stuck with PCs.  And I hate MS and have been known to yell at Bill Gates while trying to get programs to work.

I don't mind the fact that I'm not on WiFi...I just hate Windows.

Have fun, sweetie!

[ Parent ]
How does your friend like the Mac, Youff? (14.80 / 5)
Just curious.

Btw, have you thought of maybe switching to Mac, and saving up some money to do so?

Macs have an advantage over windows, in that they're not as prone to viruses, trojan horses, or stuff like that.   I know lots of people who feel likewise about windows...that they're troublesome and virus-prone.

Good luck.

A friend of mine also had windows for quite awhile in an older, second-hand computer that she got, and had better luck when she switched to a Mac.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Oh, Miki, everyone (10.20 / 5)
I've ever known who had a Mac preferred it.

Saving up?  We're talking years.  Literally.  I just can't afford one.

Wish I could.

Sorry to hear that you can't afford a Mac computer, Youff. (15.00 / 3)
It must be a drag to have the computer that you presently own crash all the time.

I just used my blackberry to record (13.75 / 4)
downloaded it to my computer, and then uploaded it to youtube. I've also used windows movie maker to create stuff and upload, but it was a bit more complicated.

Ha. Methinks (13.00 / 4)
this is a massive understatement:

I've also used windows movie maker to create stuff and upload, but it was a bit more complicated.

When I actually had a real job, our Art department and our Promotions department both had Macs.  Why?  It is so much easier to create/reproduce art and advertising on a Mac.

In Editorial, we were stuck with Windows.

Sucked.

Gha... (8.40 / 5)
The wonderfully friendly homeless guy who wanders my street (he used to have a friend who I haven't seen in a while now, I talk to the guy a bit but don't feel comfortable prying too deeply into his life) is being arrested on the corner in front of my building right now.  I'm especially worried, because the cop looks like a scared kid who keeps fingering his gun.  I have a decent view from here now, and I think I've already made it known that people are watching.  Here's hoping nothing happens...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

do let us know (13.60 / 5)
if you see him again....

with more & more ppl becoming homeless i find myself relating to/putting myself in their shoes more easily now....

O! (15.00 / 4)
Follow your instincts.  I hope he's all right.  We get a bunch of cops in at work, and we don't charge them for coffee or fountain drinks (probably so they'll respond quickly if we need them) and one thing I've noticed is, there are cops who are really okay and ones I would prefer not to run into in a dark alley after sunset.  Especially if all I was doing in that dark alley is running out for two cans of cat food.

Yes, many of the cops here are thugs.  Why do you ask?

Did you hear this story from Portland? (12.00 / 4)
Business booms after Portland restaurant kicks cop out

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - The co-owner of a Portland vegan restaurant who asked a police officer to leave says the move has been good for business.

John Langley told The Oregonian business nearly doubled over the weekend after the story made national news.

I think the guy was kind of a jackass for doing that myself, although I know the neighborhood (Lower East Burnside, I lived there in a motel for a few weeks in 2007; and outside of Old Town just across the river it's probably got the highest population of homeless people in Portland) and I can sort of see his point, especially considering the cafe's social mission.  But still, no point in making actual enemies of the cops, right?  Especially when the vast majority of them are good people, a few deadly and dangerous rotten apples (Hello, Chris "Killer & 12-Year Old Girl Shooter" Humphreys!) aside.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
No, Jay, hadn't heard that one (15.00 / 4)
We get the real cops (I have carded undercover detectives for cigs: in PA, we have to card until age 30 now -- for smoking! -- and some of them are about 25, and when they open their wallets to get out their ID, I see the badges) and we get the Business Improvement District people who bike around and radio in problems: these are mostly underpaid, friendly shlubs with, usually, no kick-ass attitude.  They just want a (free) soda or Icee and some air conditioning and we have THEIR phone # too just in case.

And just tonight I asked a favor of the nicest cop to frequent our store.  That's a long and probably boring story so I won't burden you with it beyond saying that I'm not directly involved in the scenario.

BTW do you know how to fix a keyboard?  My comma button got stuck just now & I love this keyboard.

That's funny... (10.00 / 3)
It's actually the complete opposite here.  The PPB officers (the real cops) Downtown are (again, for the most part) pretty cool (I think they receive extra training for dealing with the homeless), but it's the Portland Business Alliance private 'security' jackasses who are the main problem Downtown, imo.  Arrogant entitled jerkoffs, for the most part.  Especially when they ride their bikes (and Segways, seriously) on sidewalks the wrong way at high speed, coming around blind corners and everything.  One of these days, they're gonna kill a kid or something.  I've been complaining.

BTW do you know how to fix a keyboard?  My comma button got stuck just now & I love this keyboard.

Yes.  Stand near a curb, lift it over your head, and smash it into the ground!  That'll unstick that dastardly key!!!

Heh, kidding!  Please don't!

;)

Sorry, no I don't know anything about computers besides how to type on them.  Took me two days (and some assistance) to even just figure out how to maximize the browser and show the status bar on my new MacBook!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...
