"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

One of our (11.00 / 4)
defunct local businesses used to put this on their board every year right before the 4th of July:

"If you go forth on the 4th with a fifth you might not go forth on the 5th"

They've been closed for probably 20 years now but I still think of it every year.

Fantastic! (15.00 / 3)
that's a Great Saying!
it must be if you've remembered it that long. & i'm sure you're not the only one!

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

This is great Ria (8.00 / 5)
I can't think right now but this is good...

Never under estimate the power of advertising....

Two young boys walked into a pharmacy one day, picked out a box of tampons and proceeded to the checkout counter.
The man at the counter asked the older boy, "Son, how old are you?"
"Eight," the boy replied.
The man continued, "do you know what these are used for?"
The boy replied, "not exactly, but they aren't for me.  They're for him.  He's my brother. He's four. We saw on TV that if you use these you would be able to swim and ride a bike. Right now, he can't do either."

thank you, Ria... (7.67 / 3)
this couldn't have come at a better moment.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

It depends on whether (15.00 / 4)
Good Karma is on top or Bad Karma is on top.

When Good Karma prevails:

Follow your bliss - Joseph Campbell

When Bad Karma prevails:

That which does not kill me makes me stronger. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Or, how about this one?:

Every man and every woman is a star. - Aleister Crowley

I vaguely remember reading that... (13.50 / 4)
Guess it's time to scare up a copy and reread.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.
E. B. White

how do I choose? (15.00 / 4)
When my kids graduated from high school, I gave each of them (and a few of their friends) books of quotations I'd collected and categorized.  I have stacks and stacks of index cards with quotes on every conceivable subject, with no theme other than they spoke to me.

A couple off the top:

Dream like you're never going to die
Live like it's your last day
Love like you've never been hurt
Sing like nobody's listening
Dance like nobody's watching
Live like it's heaven on earth

The philosophy of the classroom in one generation
will be the philosophy of government in the next.

Abraham Lincoln

"My country right or wrong," is a thing no patriot
would think of saying except in a desperate case.  It is like
saying, "My mother, drunk or sober."

G.K. Chesterton

Must stop...one last gem:

A great many peole think they are thinking when they
are merely rearranging their prejudices.

William James

indeed a gem (15.00 / 3)
from James....

i wish i were that organized to have index cards!
i have shreds & bits of paper stuffed everywhere... in books, under bookends, in mirror edges, etc etc... i'm sure many have disappeared. i used to have a wall over my sewing machine that where i pinned the bits up to, but it's been over a dozen years since i had that....
anyway....

thanks!

it would have been better (13.00 / 4)
without the typo!

I transcribed all my scraps of paper onto index cards to facilitate categorizing them for the kids' books.  I still have a notebook on my desk with a bunch of my favorites--it collects the new entries until I can organize them.

[ Parent ]
!!! (15.00 / 4)
i kept looking & looking until finally i saw your typo.
you shouldn't have said anything-  (^.^)

i need a dedicated inspiration notebook....

one of my favorites... (12.00 / 3)
Even places that have been shrouded in darkness for billions of years can be illuminated. Even a stone from the bottom of a river can be used to produce fire. Our present sufferings, no matter how dark, have certainly not continued for billions of years-nor will they linger forever. The sun will definitely rise. In fact, its ascent has already begun. ~ Ikeda

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

gha! (12.50 / 2)
that's a good one to keep close!
(like on a card in my pocket to refer to often!)

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
somewhat different tone, but (12.67 / 3)
still useful...

"The cheaper the crook the gaudier the patter."

-Sam Spade, in The Maltese Falcon

and

"I am but one dude."

-Zonker Harris "Greatest Living Slacker"

"In proportion to the vigor of the individual, these revolutions are frequent, until in some happier mind they are incessant..." R.W.Emerson - Compensation

splendiferous! (15.00 / 3)
thanks!
movie quotes are often best...

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
