Underwater Screaming

(take another look
at what we are losing to greed
- promoted by RiaD
)

As I previously mentioned, I shall post only images pertaining to underwater life.
Helping me choose these images from my archives, I have my good friend Coconut, a parrot I rescued many years ago.
I therefore will include him in the opening.
Plus I promised Ekaterin I would.
I feel the situation in the gulf is being slowly moved back in the pages of the national newspapers & the gulf is not in the collective minds of the people of the country as a whole.
The pain & suffering to the whole nation will be felt for/in years to come, but the immediate stress is surely being felt among the people directly impacted by this man made catastrophe. Those who live there, breath there & wanted to die in peace there.
These people are our brothers & sisters, sons & daughters, & mothers & fathers.
They are us.
Although many of these specimens imaged are not endemic to the gulf, they are nonetheless part of our  planet`s heartbeat, & will ultimately be affected as time goes on, no matter how far our planet`s blood, (the oceans) is pumped to.
I post these to impress upon you, the life forms that many will never have the opportunity to ever see in the wilderness of the unseen.
It bothers me that this was allowed to happen, especially when we can see the devastation we`ve caused on the visible surface of the earth, & which only is a 1/4 part of our pale blue dot.
Another thing that comes to my mind right now, is my anger at the responsible parties to this mess, was temporarily forgotten today, while I attended a funeral for a longtime dear friend.
A funeral!! Damn, I needed a funeral to distract my anger.
But my friend Coconut makes it better albeit only momentarily.

COCONUT for Ekaterin

Have a safe 4th of July.
Shortly to be cross posted at DD, BooMan Tribune, Wimpy Badger, & in Orange.
Thank you for helping get the word spread. We cannot again forget our friends in the gulf.
Once was plenty.

i'm sorry.
i forgot to put your tags in until just now.
these don't show up on the series page until the tag "firefly flying" is in.

Right below (15.00 / 1)
where you put the title when you are making a new post is a box for adding tags.  They are words that describe your post.  You enter them with commas between the words or phrases like this: Firefly Flying, photography, Gulf of Mexico Gusher, etc. Tags help when people are searching for things by subject.  When you have a series going entering your series name like "Firefly Flying" in the tags makes it so when people search for Firefly Flying all of the entries in the series will be on the search results.

Alma (6.00 / 1)
Thank you very much.
I`m getting the hang of it.
I had never rec`d comments or diaries/essays, till Tahoe schooled me on that.
Just ask her, hah.
I really have a hard time remembering to do so.
If there is any way to check, I may not have ever rec`d any comments here, though I endeavor to do so in the future.

[ Parent ]
I don't think (15.00 / 1)
people here worry as much if they don't get their comments or posts rec'd.  Its always nice if they are rec'd but its not a necessity.  Here the comment rec's are a little different and more fun than most places and convey more emotion in my opinion.  Rec's are also good so you know that the person you commented to has seen your comment, but you usually reply to comments so that one doesn't apply to you often.  :)

Beautiful Knucklehead (15.00 / 7)
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend.

We talk about the gulf disaster every night in the restaurant.  I don't plan on letting anyone forget it and all that we've lost and are losing.

Alma (12.60 / 5)
Thank you so very much, Alma.

This is a beautiful and very moving diary, KH. (15.00 / 7)
I, too am sorry about the loss of your friend, and my thoughts are with you during these dark and difficult times.  I will not go into a whole big schpiel about this whole situation, because everybody else here on firefly-dreaming knows my feelings and opinions about this whole situation and who bears responsibility for it by heart at this point, but I'll say this:  To paraphrase a Quaker adage that an old, old friend of mine paraphrased to me at the time of my dad's passing almost ten years ago (although I'm Jewish): " Here's holding you to the light during these dark and difficult times."

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Thank you knuck (15.00 / 6)
I am going to show you beautiful underwater pics to everyone on the 4th.  I have been getting ready for our usual bash but this year I am turning it into a Beyond Oil showing a 13 minute video provided by the Sierra Club. Creating a discussion on what we can do and having everyone sign a letter to Obama in support of setting a goal of getting us off oil in the next 20 years.  It seems like so little too late!

I am so sorry about your friend Coconut....  :o(

Kathleen (14.86 / 7)
I`m glad you are going to show them to your friends, & what a nice compliment to me that is.
One more thing.
One of my longtime lady friends is who passed over to the other side, not my good friend Coconut.
But your heartfelt though is much appreciated.

[ Parent ]
O knuck... (14.67 / 6)
such gorgeous beings you show to us....

my heart breaks daily at thoughts of these  lovelies gone forever, as i'm sure some species will be.

i'm so sorry for the loss of your friend, but sorrier still that it took this loss to shake you from your anger. i too am angry. Ver Ver angry. we must find useful things to do to channel the anger. posting pictures, writing essays & congressmen, and talking, talking talking to everyone about how PURE greed caused this.... so that they will see the truth not the BS the 'news' is publishing.

thank you for these photo-essays knuck.
i've always enjoyed them. even moreso now.

the people at dKos seem to really love your posts! YaY!!!

i'll try to remember to go advertise for you each week until you get a 'following'....
at that point you should start hitting the rec list with these....

i hope so anyway. if you could hit the rec list you'll get TONS of views which equals more people thinking about the gulf & what we're losing for one companies profit margins.

i'm sorry about today. i thought i'd set this up to FP this afternoon....
i'll go do that now.....

I could only care about the reclist if it gets more eyes on what we could potentially lose forever.
Thanks for helping out with that endeavor.

Merci, Knuck! (15.00 / 5)
I can't select a favorite -- they are all so beautiful and painful reminders --something we live with daily in our minds and hearts.

Yes, I've noticed, too, that the whole catastrophe is beginning to fade from the news -- is it because they don't want us to know what is going on?  I would guess that would be the reason.  The screw-ups by BP and lack of action to begin cleaning up until over 60 days of the gushing oil is incredible.  The excuse given for not using Kevin Costner's machines in the beginning was because they don't get up every single drop of oil -- can you friggin' imagine?  So, instead, it was better to just let the oil gush unabated for over 60 days??????? MF's!!!!!  And don't forget the offers of experts from 12 countries, now being considered, but originally refused.  All the innocent "life" that has been affected is beyond heart-breaking!

Monsieur Coconut, "Le Sage!"  Ils est si beau!

The laundry bird is hilarious.
I would letCoconut that close to an open washing machine, but he sure loves to empty my sock drawer.
He flings socks exactly the same way.
He`ll also run & fetch wadded up napkins & run back & flip them at me.
Thanks for the laugh.

Pale Blue Dot (15.00 / 7)
I've posted "Pale Blue Dot" before, but this version I just found last night just seems to fit in this thread so well...

It's 5 1/2 minutes long, and some of the images bring out Sagan's words so effectively. It's worth a watch again, given how we're fucking things up so efficiently. Sorta puts things in perspective; "a thin film of life", indeed. They're tossing around numbers in the billions to clean up the gulf, to pay for charge two wars to our kids, but 200K people a day losing their last lifeline (unemployment insurance)? That last one's got to be a political game for the party of true evil.

In the 80's I had a BIG (100 lbs) dog. Half black lab, 1/4 golden retriever, 1/4 english sheepdog. He was a good boy. Loved to chase the frisbee. Little kids could beat the crap out of him and he'd just wag his tail, but he learned to fight from my friend's half-wolf. Other dogs didn't stand a chance. I never saw him start a fight with another dog, but they happened and he never lost. Well, except to the half-wolf, but they were "buddies" so he never really hurt him, just made sure he knew who was the boss.

I got him right around the time "Cosmos" was on PBS. I named him Sagan.

Best dog I ever had.

[ Parent ]
Anybody who would (14.83 / 6)
Anybody who would name their dog Sagan AND play frisbee with him is someone very special indeed! I often identify with your words and feel as though they are words that I would write if I were so gifted...but this particular sense of relatedness I am now feeling takes the cake!

Carl Sagan was such a special human being in so many ways. We need him today. I miss his ability to share the wonderment and excitement of this universe and his ability to make the complexities of it broadly understandable. Fortunately for us, we have his words and images...

Thanks for sharing this, Timbuk3. Imho it is not possible to post it too many times or in too many places. Carl is still speaking directly to us all...

Frisbee dogs are awesome... Does the name Ashley Whippet ring a bell?

It rang a bell after I googled it. ;-> (14.83 / 6)
Sagan was an awesome dog. I could tell lots of stories about him.

I got him when I lived in SD, along the last wild stretch of the MO river. Good pheasant hunting, there, so I took him hunting. The first several times we went out he was not good at it. I remember walking through a slough (sp?), which is a low spot where weeds grow thick, and all he did was follow me, stepping on the backs of my shoes and knocking them off. Toward the end of the season I had just about given up on him ever being a hunter, but took him anyway. One day he just "got it". He'd range a few yards ahead of me, flushing everything, and invariably run down anything I shot. Or anybody else shot, for that matter. If I was hunting with friends I'd come out the end of a field with more birds than I could carry. ;->

A good hunting dog makes a lot of difference, too. You don't waste game by shooting it and having it come down "with legs". If they can run, they run off and die in hiding. No one wants that.

He'd act the same way when I walked him at night. This was sort of fun when we'd run into people, because he'd come hurtling in out of the dark (he was almost all black) and scare the shit out of them. Not that he'd ever hurt anyone who wasn't threatening me. I never worried about walking in the dark.

Later, when I moved to WY, we didn't hunt so had to find other things. That's when the friz became a big deal. I'd leave it on the fridge. When Sagan got stir crazy he'd find a way to get on top of the fridge and bring me the friz. He'd plop it in my lap and stare at me, saying "we need to go, boss". Off to the Rio Platte we'd go.

If we went to a field he could run down the friz and catch it in the air, but he really liked to go after it in the water. He was a strong swimmer, and smart. When he got out he'd make sure he was a few steps away from anyone when he shook off. With that long wiry hair of his, that was a good thing. Water would go flying, then he'd pick the friz back up, bring it to me, and "say" "throw it again!" I remember a woman walking by, one day, and saying "he's MAGNIFICENT!"

Yup. Good dog. I think Carl would be proud.

And yeah, we need voices like Carl Sagan's, today.

Have you ever heard of "the Fermi Paradox"? If the odds are high that there are plenty of other planets with intelligent life, why haven't we heard from any of them? Which leads to a theory that intelligence leads to self-extermination.

I don't necessarily agree. The universe is a big ol' place, and we live on a fraction of a pixel, so to speak. So, it could be that we just haven't been found. Or, it could be that after traveling across light-years a ship full of aliens don't want to mess with beings who are crazy enough to have and use atomic weapons. And shit where we live, and deny it has any effect. And find 1000 other ways to commit suicide as a species, then rely on an imaginary space ghost to clean up our messes. At least, I wouldn't land here if I came in peace.

[ Parent ]
My cat is named Enrico! (14.83 / 6)
I've never 'owned' a dog (or been owned by one, LOL), but Sagan sounds the kind I'd like to have. Good stories deserve to be shared and I thank you for yours. I can see him shaking off the water now!

And I agree, if I were cruisin' the universe in my warp saucer I wouldn't give much thought to this crazy planet. I'd be movin' on to find some place more worthwhile to study/enjoy!

Which reminds me of another poem:

pity this busy monster,manunkind,

not.  Progress is a comfortable disease:
your victum(death and life safely beyond)

plays with the bigness of his littleness
-electrons deify one razorblade
into a mountainrange;lenses extend

unwish through curving wherewhen until unwish
returns on its unself.
         A world of made
is not a world of born-pity poor flesh

and trees, poor stars and stones, but never this
fine specimen of hypermagical

ultraomnipotence.  We doctors know

a hopeless case if-listen:there's a hell
of a good universe next door;let's go

- e. e. cummings

What a great name for a dog especially after he was named for.
I always think of my dogs, a pair of brothers, I rescued from the pound.
I actually miss them a lot.
They were the gentlest of dogs, but could shred anything that threatened my daughter, her mom, then the boys & lastly myself.
But kids could pile on them without fear, just as you describe.
As for hunting, I never trained them.
When I was at the barn, they would simply watch the hawk.
If the hawk alerted to something in the brush, they would both tear off, one directly into the brush, the other circling around to pounce on what his brother flushed out. Then they shred.
I could never figure out the telepathy between them.
I had trained them in a lingo I made up, along with hand signals that didn`t seem to have any relevance.
For instance I could brush my hair back & they`d sit up & with a "Granty" they were instantly heeled.
That way no one else could command the dogs.
Thanks for reminding me of my best friends.
Happy 4th of July.
Here`s a pic I shot at Paradise Cove a few years ago.
The barge they are shot off from has already arrived for tonight`s display.
