Life's Mirror
Madeline Bridges

There are loyal hearts, there are spirits brave,
There are souls that are pure and true,
Then give the world the best you have,
And the best will come back to you.

newpioneer :: Tuesday's Open ~ Reflections
Give love, and love to your life will flow,
A strength in your utmost need,
Have faith, and a score of hearts will show
Their faith in your word and deed.

Give truth, and your gift will be paid in kind;
And honor will honor meet;
And a smile that is sweet will surely find
A smile that is just as sweet.

Give pity and sorrow to those who mourn,
You will gather in flowers again
The scattered seeds from your thoughts outborne,
Though the sowing seemed but vain.

For life is the mirror of king and slave,
'Tis just what we are and do;
Then give to the world the best you have,
And the best will come back to you.

so... what's on your mind today?

I am a fan... (15.00 / 7)
...of those mountains.

All mountains, for that matter.  And water, too.  FSMdamn, gimme a lake with some mountains in the background and I'll stare at that shit forever.  Helps me think.

Reminds me of a great morning, waking up on an Amtrak Empire Builder train just before dawn a few years back, over Lake Pend Oreille heading into Sandpoint, Idaho.

I'm trying to give the world the best I have these days.  I'm really trying, man...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

I'm right with ya, Jay... (14.43 / 7)
I'm giving my best, though what I seem to be getting back lately is quite a few kicks in the rubber parts... the rough times can't last forever, but sometimes I wonder........

can i (14.33 / 6)
live on that boat? pleeeeeze?

i love your poem.
i've never been much into poetry but lately it is being put in my path at every turn :-)

thank you newp!

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

I've been dreaming (5.67 / 6)
of living on that boat ever since I found that pic last night.

all the other furred ones are great, but baby Thor, not so much. his paralysis is spreading, even though he still loves his bottle more than anything else, and he's still peeing and pooping.

the vet let us know this morning that he doesn't think that Thor will regain the use of his limbs, and the paralysis is spreading to his neck. he's back home with us, so Juan and I can chant with him next to the altar, filling his passage with all the love that's in our hearts. I just couldn't say goodbye today, I can still wrap him in love and I can still hope beyond hope. if he hasn't recovered by tomorrow a.m., then we have no choice but to face the decision of sending him over the rainbow bridge.

I'm so sorry that I couldn't let you all know that he's recovered as expected. all of your well wishes mean the world to us, and you're all in my heart.

[ Parent ]
you say.... (13.75 / 4)
...he still loves his bottle more than anything else...

are you giving him just pedialyte?

the links i found said to NOT give milk....

it seemed to me kinda like impacted bowels... that the milk is so rich the animal cannot digest it properly & then it cannot pass through... like a horrendous case of constipation.

which brings this to mind:

All the organs of the human body were having a meeting, trying to decide who should be the one in charge.

"I should be in charge," said the brain , "Because I run all the body's systems, so without me nothing would happen."

"I should be in charge," said theblood, "Because I circulate oxygen all over so without me you'd all waste away."

"I should be in charge," said thestomach," Because I process food and give all of you energy."

"I should be in charge," said thelegs, "because I carry the body wherever it needs to go."

"I should be in charge," said the eyes, "Because I allow the body to see where it goes."

"I should be in charge," said therectum, "Because I'm responsible for waste removal."

All the other body parts laughed and laughed at the rectum and insulted him horribly, so in a huff, he shut down tight. Within a few days, the brain had a terrible headache, the stomach was bloated, the legs got wobbly, the eyes got watery, and the blood was toxic. They all decided that the rectum should be the boss.

So what's the moral of the story?

The asshole is usually in charge!

i hope things will turn around for him....
or his passing will be quick, his steps into the next life light...

no milk at all... (15.00 / 6)
just pedialyte, now with a powdered vitamin and mineral mix from the vet. he finally passed the impacted milk with the help of the pedialyte and baking soda a couple of days ago, so his digestive tract and bowels are clean and working fine. it's just the paralysis that won't let up. his life force continues so strong, that's why I just couldn't quit on him yet.

I had to put down a cat a couple of years ago. My only "regret" is that I wonder if I waited too long. It's a tough decision, but I don't think anyone will ever think you didn't do your best.

Having said that, have you tried penicillin and/or thiamine? See Floppy Kid Syndrome. Thiamine is important in neurotransmission.

your words mean a lot. yes, he's been on a pen and thiamine regimen from the beginning, but we just can't get his paralysis to reverse course yet.

I fed that cat with an eyedropper for days (12.17 / 6)
Always hoping she'd get better. She steadily declined, but was still able to walk on Saturday. By Sunday morning it was pretty clear she was done. The problem was, I couldn't find a vet who could help her go out peacefully until 10AM Monday, so I had to watch her lie like that for a day and a half. If I'd have decided on Saturday, she wouldn't have had to go through that.

It's not really a "regret", though, because I know my heart was in the right place, and I know I did the best I could. More than many people would do, as far as that goes.

So, can I ask, how long has he been on thiamine? I ask because of this at that first link:

If the kid can still walk but is wobbly then give  2cc long-acting penicillin orally and 500MG thiamin. The Thiamin is mixed with the penicillin, and is imperative to recovery This should work in 6 hours. If the kid is comatose, give 5CC %50 dextrose orally and keep warm. Give the pen and thiamin for 3 days once a day.

It's a little contradictory, but it seems to be saying it should work in 6 hours if the kid is still walking, but could be administered for 3 days before you'll see any result if the kid is "paralyzed".

I'm sorry for what you're going through, but I have complete faith in your ability to know what to do, and when. Seems like you found yourself a good vet, too.

Good luck and best wishes.

thanks again, Timbuk (13.00 / 7)
no regrets ever when we do our best, with all our hearts. I think it makes all fireflies dance that you filled your cat's last days with so much caring and love, though sometimes even our best efforts can't reverse the course that nature seems to have set.

Thor was first treated last Thursday, and I've continued his injections every day since then, and I'll give him another today so that will make 7 doses so far. he was fine last Wed. night, but when I went to the barn on Thurs. morning he was on his side with his legs stretched straight out - I freaked because I really thought he was dead, but he was only comatose and barely breathing.

it's been a long week, but he's still holding on strong - wait till you see him drinking from his bottle (I first wrote, I wish you could see him drinking, then I decided to make a video for you). starting last night I would pull the bottle out of his mouth and he went nuts trying to get the nipple back, smacking his lips, sticking his tongue in and out like mad, and really letting me have it with his screams. it sure got his mom's attention, but she could be right next to him bleating and she won't get a peep out of him... but let him see me with his bottle and goes crazy - I think I have the poor little guy completely confused!

he even started stretching his neck and doing his best to rock himself towards the bottle, though his legs still won't cooperate. I just can't give up on him yet, he's not in any pain, so he'll be going back to the vet and hopefully he'll continue to sing and dance for his bottle in front of the doc. I'm going to ask for oral meds instead of the injections. though I have years of experience giving shots to the animals, perhaps this time I'm just not hitting the mark. but I KNOW his little mouth works. and since he's been having vitamins mixed with his pedialyte, he's doing way better than before.

he's already had half his bottle this morning when I decided to make this, so he's not quite as animated or vocal as when he's really hungry, but I wanted to share this with you all (hope he makes you smile like he does me). I've already made my decision to keep fighting right along with our little Jar Jar Binks... erm ... Thor!

Thanks for asking :)

I've been refraining from making "welcome to my world" comments when folks complain about the 'heat wave', heh. We've had weeks of high 90's with heat indexes of 105+ this year. It has been hot down in the south U.S. this year, and much earlier than usual. It just doesn't make the news. I've been getting outside and doing yard work in thirty or forty minute intervals almost every day so that I acclimate as the heat builds, though. But it is still brutal.

I'll be out here continuing to believe in Thor's full recovery and long happy life...

that you're taking the outside work little by little, and like you, I've refrained from jumping into the heat wave discussions - we're in a year-round heat wave here in the Caribbean, and just as you describe your own situation, it's brutal. all those suffering from the heat are in my thoughts.

Thor was great at the vet's office today, and won everyone's heart over. the assistant couldn't believe the difference in him, and we all agreed to not give up. like I just told Youff, he went crazy for the pediasure treat, but not so much for his new meds! he's now on liquid B12, 700mg of thiamine and antibiotics as one of his daily feedings for the next week (can't blame him for not wanting to drink down that potion!). and J promised to take over during the day so I can get some sleep!!!

What cool pictures, newpioneer!! (15.00 / 4)
Thanks for posting them and sharing them with us.

in about a half an hour, I've got to wake Aziza up, play with her, and then go buy myself a new regular land phone, since I dropped it in some soapy water as I was doing some dishes in the sink, and now it's not working!  Ugh!

Oh well.  Shit happens, as some people say.

I'm a defiant lady who sticks up for what she believes in--even though it is to a fault, at times.  Well, I guess that's me.   Some people obviously think I'm a wierd, overpampered, spoiled brat,  because I refuse to tough out the summers without an A/C, but I have my reasons for choosing not to go the "tough it out" route in this situation, as I've pointed out.

I don't trust politicians at large, which is why I ultimately went from being a Democrat to being an Independent (or Unenrolled, as it's called in my city of residence).  Some changes that've come about I've liked and welcomed.  The city that I presently reside in and have resided in for 22 years, used to be run by real gangsters.  Now that's changed, and I believe that our community helped bring about a better situation.  Not sure about the public school system here in this city, but, then again, I didn't have kids that I had to worry about educating.  Yet, I'd still like to see the local kids from around this city get a better education and a chance to have a more rewarding life, as well as furthur education after high school.   Frankly, I'd rather see my tax dollars go into improving the school system here in the city where I presently reside than to see my tax dollars helping school systems in the all-white bedroom communities that're far-removed from the city and can improve their school systems without my help, although Brookline is an exception to that for me, if one gets the drift.

Our city, which was once a predominantly blue-collar white Ethnic city, has now become more of a mish-mash of all different types of people, as well as many artists and craftspeople.  It still has a muscular, earthy, ethnic flavor to it that I like, also, although there are still some areas where one must be careful while walking at night, especially  women.  I guess that's the way it goes, at times.  It has a nice theatre, which shows movies, and has all kinds of concerts, which I've gone to on a number of occasions.  Sometimes, they'll show even a classic movie or two.  They even have outdoor movies every Thursday night during the summer, in at least two or three different parks.  That, too, is rather cool.

In 3 more weeks, my next debut with the film West Side Story comes up!  I'm excited about going to that, also.  I have so much to do, and sometimes, I feel that there aren't enough hours in the day to do them!  wow!  I've got lots of work to do, Aziza to take care of, and a trip to Iowa to plan out, which won't be until the fall.  Bike riding, on decent days is done, but I've got to ride out this heatwave, which is supposed to last through tomorrow.  Who knows what'll happen next??  Eh.

Anyway...later..

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

stick to your guns, my friend! (15.00 / 3)

i must disagree completely with this:

i don't believe ANYone here thinks that, said that or implied that.
no one ever said you should "tough it out"
everyone was just discussing their views on horrendous heat & various methods of cooling down.

truthfully? i don't think anyone cares whether you use a/c or fans or open your windows, as long as you keep cool during the heat.

this heat wave seems to be affecting the NE more than the SE.  Weird.

But a three-degree difference isn't going to cool anyone down, unfortunately.

I am so glad you realized there was no judgment of you using A/C, everyone has to deal with the heat in there own way.

My MIL lived in desert heat in Utah (at least it was dry heat) and she hated A/C and we all suffered in the dead of summer visiting her.  It was a worry because elderly and heat can be deadly.  It was awful to take a road trip with her in the summer, we would all be dieing without the air conditioning on in the car!!!

I get by, like Jay does, here in the NW with ceiling fans.  I love the fresh air and the breeze they create. We put them in the great room and all the bedrooms, but I tell ya if it is hot and humid I can not breath, I am running from one A/C place to another.  It doesn't get like that here very often.

If it gets too hot where everyone is you can come here and jump in the lake that is my favorite way to cool off.  Two of my very best friends are my neighbors and we will call each other and say meet me out in the middle and we'll get on our blowup floats and paddle out.  It will be warm enough to do that in a couple of weeks, the lake gets comfortably warm.

Everyone one has their own way of dealing with the heat there is no right or wrong way to keep cool, ya just got to do it.

When I get to the essay on the 4th party I will point out these friends in my pics.  I took tons of pics!

Stay cool everyone this is the time of year I am glad I am here in the NW!

you need to take a trip out west.  I would offer you a bedroom but they are currently all full, you could sleep on the couch much better than the garage.  :o)

Oh, Kathleen, you know I was joking. (13.00 / 4)
But I love Seattle.  And I think I would love Vancover, too, if I'd ever been there.  Not sure about Portland: I mean, I don't think I've been to Portland, but it's possible I spent a weekend there two decades ago.  Two decades ago I went on a bunch of business trips...definitely Seattle, San Fran twice, I don't remember Portland.

If there are any jobs where you live, I would gladly sleep on the couch.  As you know, my job sux.

Jobs are hard to come by but you know the head quarters to costco is 5 miles from my house in Issaquah AND their flagship store is right across the street from the head quarters.  Please apply on line I think you would fit right in and could work your way up.  You are so smart, have a great work history.  They have so much to offer and they are good to their employees!  I think you could work as a buyer for the books or a book reviewer, but start out doing anything to get your foot in the door. They pay good and have great benefits. You could sleep on my couch until you had enough for an apt.  I am NOT joking!

OMFG (14.00 / 5)
That has reduced me to tears, dear...

I want so VERY much to get out of retail...basically, I loathe retail...but if I'm stuck here, a good company is better than the slimeballs I already work for.

I don't think my resume/job application looks that good -- usually, if I can actually meet the person doing the hiring, I am more likely to be hired.  That's how I got this job  company had a job fair, and Annie (my hiring manager) sat down, looked at my job application, talked to me, we connected, and I was hired on the spot: subject to drug testing and a 5-hour training class.  I knew I would pass the drug test & the class.  I test very well: always have.  (Damn, I miss ganja, though.)

do you have one (15.00 / 4)
with your real name? or some semblance of?
if not go make an account like that.
because you have a 'popular' name you could try putting "Im" in front of your name, so you wont have 763972 behind it!

i've heard several places that having a weird e-mail hurts you in job apps.

Is "Egret in PA" too weird?  I know that Youff is kinda weird: there was one guy at Orange who figured out it was a goof on Ephrata, but nobody else has, afaict.

But sweetie, you know my real name.  There are only about 100,000  of us.  First name/lastname/common initials: you name it.

I know of a pro football player, a writer, a musician: all of whom are more prominent than I am.  And they're just the ones I know of.

I don't think I want to work for any corporation that doesn't like egrets in PA.  How can you NOT like egrets?  Well, unless you're BP.  They hate every living thing.

But that's my non-gmail name: egret in PA.  Haven't used that account since the last time I job-hunted, but I think the account is still active: photobucket still recognizes me by that name, anyway.

I have no idea (13.60 / 5)
I would use what is most convenient for you, I don't know why it would make a difference.  I just think your skills, experience and education would flag them.

One advantage about a large company is the opportunity inside the company.  I couldn't stand working for Boeing but after a while working there I was able to move into jobs inside the company that I did like doing that fit with my passions.  Also Costco is very business savvy and will be around for a long time so that provides security.  Go for it girl.  :o)

[ Parent ]
OK. Sounds good. Just... (11.25 / 4)
a couple of questions.  If I apply, will they think I want to work at the Costco here rather than the corporate office there?

I can't afford a car, and I am not a driver if I can help it.  So the Costco here is out of the picture unless I get a shift that affords me bus service.  Or if there's someone I can car-pool with.  (You would think, this many years after Jimmy Carter & car pool lanes, it would be widely available: alas, at least here, it is not.  People are such shits.)

I get you on take whatever you can get and work your way up.  I totally get you.

See, here's the thing: Costco might well be a huge improvement over my current evil corporate overlords.  But when Annie hired me, she was thinking that I could be in management.

Well, yes.  I'm certainly more competent than the current manager.  Also I know how to write a coherent sentence w/o too many typos.

So what's holding me back?

(a) You have to own a car.

(b) Store managers are even more heavily exploited by Corporate than us flunkies.

Is Costco that much better?  Don't get me wrong...I'll apply online tomorrow...but -- are they really any better than the other slimesucking corporate leeches?

I understand your (13.75 / 4)
hesitation here is some info on the founder of Costco..

http://politics.usnews.com/new...

Jim Sinegal contributes only the Democratic party, his office has no walls and he attends every opening.  His CEOs have a hard time keeping up.

Every time I go in they have something new that is organic, they pride themselves in quality and trying to go as healthy as possible as long as the public buys it.

Youff if nothing else it offers you options if you get an interview and an offer you can go back to your employer and say I have another offer and see what they do.

Costco is not perfect but they try to be good stewards and their employees love it.  They listen to their customers and have the best return policies and usually the best prices on anything.  It is not like Walmart that offers the cheapest on the backs of employees to rape profits.  Costco has proven they can make a profit and still be good to their employees and sell a good product.

How much do they charge for a month bus pass?  How far away is it from you?

It's worth giving Costco a try, Youff. You've nothing to lose by trying. (14.75 / 4)
If there's a Costco store a mere 5 miles from your house, you might want to try going there in person and applying for a job there, as well.  That would be a really good follow-up, as well.  If you fill out an application, and then don't hear from them within afew days, try a follow-up phone call or so.  Showing them that you're interested, and that you've got perseverence is a sure way to get a job.  All the best of luck....and keep us all posted.

It must've been sheer hell having to deal without A/C in the dead of summer, due to your MIL's insistence on not compromising and letting everybody have the air-conditioning.  This:

It was a worry because elderly and heat can be deadly.

is very true, Kathleen.  It's not only true for elderly, but it's also true for pets, young children, infants, and those with chronic illnesses, compromised immune systems, and people who're either severely overweight or underweight.  Regardless of what anybody says or thinks, air-conditioners are known to save lives.  Oh, and I also forgot to tell everybody that I not only reside on the fourth floor of a 5-story building, own a pet exotic parrot, do work that requires an open torch, but the  building that I presently reside in is a refurbished stucco warehouse that was converted into condo lofts, mainly for artists.  Stucco and other forms of concrete also suck in a great deal of heat in the summertime.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

On a trip to Taos, I was (14.50 / 6)
introduced to a friend of my friend's family.  She had an old adobe house -- was planning to donate it to the city as a museum when she moved away -- and it was just incredible the difference in temperature outside and inside.  Outside, probably 90s, dry heat.  Inside?  Probably seventies.

No a/c.  I don't even remember any fans.  But of course those old adobe homes have very thick walls.

We could learn from what people did ages ago: in the case of the Taos house, probably 300 years ago or so.  In the case of New Orleans...well, let's ignore the oil gusher for now.  My point there is, there is a reason why the French Quarter didn't flood during Katrina.  There's also a reason why the French Quarter is about the oldest section of the city:  Centuries ago, people noticed things like: build on high ground if you live in a flood plain.  And: thick walls make for good insulation if you live in the desert.

Modern developers are just in it for the money, they don't care.  But surely there should be some governmental types regulating this stuff?

Oh, oops.  I forgot.  Regulations are for Commies. /snark

Interesting points there, Youff. (15.00 / 2)
It's true that many modern developers are just out to make a fast buck, and don't care, and that there should be more governmental regulation on this stuff.

Thick walls probably are good if one lives in the desert, but don't forget that adobe is way different than concrete or stucco and doesn't suck in nearly as much heat, if at all.  Since I don't live in the desert, there are no adobe buildings around here.

I'm more than glad I live where I'm living, with stucco walls, etc., but it does get awfully hot in the summertime here, especially during a heat-wave, and if one lives on one of the upper-most floors, which I also love.  However, I'm willing to pay somewhat of a price by having an A/C in my bedroom,  as well as a ceiling fan and an air-purifier, due to Aziza's presence.

Building high when one lives on a flood plain is all well and good.  Not everybody realizes until too late that they do live in a flood plain however.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

You've made some interesting points there, Youff, but (15.00 / 2)
I, for one, would  not want to go back to really primitive ways of dealing with given situations, because, as some people say, the good old days weren't always good.
