Three for Thursday: Open Thoughts:

by: mplo

Thu Jul 08, 2010 at 05:00:08 AM EDT

Hi, firefly-dreamers:  d

This is my first weekly Open Thoughts thread.    Here goes:

In order to get my Open Thoughts Thread for this week going, I thought I'd open it with a picture of Aziza in one of her many pensive states and poses.  Here she is:

Homecoming of Aziza
mplo :: Three for Thursday: Open Thoughts:
My thoughts are many, considering that it's only four-thirty in the  morning here in the Bay State, Boston, and New England, generally.

Aziza's turning out to be a doll, although, at five months, she's begun to test me more and more.  In addition to her pensive states, she's also intelligent, and can be playful and mischievous as anything.  I finally was able to paste the photo of Aziza into the Open thoughts diary for today, after a number of frustrating tries.    Aziza, as I've pointed out on many occasions, has turned out to be quite an inquisitive, funny, intelligent and clever bird, beyond her months.  When I change her pellets-boca nuts combo, she'll be waiting at the bottom of her cage, underneath the feeding dish panel so she can do her regular sneaking out of the cage ritual.  It's funny, but it can be a bit unnerving at times, especially if I need to put her to sleep for the night, or leave the house to go somewhere.  What's equally interesting and funny, however, is that she doesn't do this when I change her vegetables dish, or her drinking water.  I guess the pellets/boca nuts dish is more convenient for her.

As an African Grey Parrot,  which is rightfully known to be an excellent mimic, she's already begun to imitate my laugh, which might well be construed as a sign that she's on her way to talking.  Although she doesn't have full flight, Aziza definitely can fly somewhat, as I really found out yesterday afternoon.  For some reason, she took off from her favorite play top height, and landed on the uppermost third of one of my wooden venetian blinds, nearest to the top.  I managed to talk her down, and she moved down toward the bottom of the blind, where I could get her.  She'd chewed a couple of slight, small depressions in one of the slats, but I managed to pry her beak off  and get her away from the blind before she could do any further damage.  Like all birds, she's prone to destructive chewing, which is a survival instinct on their part, even for birds that were born, bred and hand-fed in captivity, as Aziza was.  She's got a required band on one of her legs in order to prove it.  Instincts still prevail.   For that reason, I will  not let Aziza on any of my furniture, due to the penchant for destroying things by chewing on them.  Moreover, since the blind slats have a small bit of finish on the wood, I don't want to take a chance on her getting sick from that, either.  Keeping my bird healthy, happy and protected is the goal, in addition to giving her lots of TLC.

At some point, I will be writing a longer essay about Aziza's Homecoming, but that's reserved for another day.

I haven't been to any movies for awhile, at least in part due to the fact that there haven't been any lately that've caught my interest, but I'm also keeping a watchful eye and a peeled ear for a movie that sounds appealing, and I keep my eyes out for a showing of West Side Story, or even a film festival that includes the movie.  Watching WSS on TV, when it rolls around, is enjoyable, but, as I've said before, nothing beats seeing this great, golden oldie but keeper of a classic on the great big, wide movie screen, in a real movie theatre, with the lights down low, and with tons of other people around, as well.  I might try to load some WSS pictures into my photobucket account at some point, to also include in one of my weekly Open Thoughts thread, but that, too, is for another  time and week.

Right now, I think, but I'm not sure, that we're supposed to get some sort of relief from the heatwave that we've been having.  Boy, oh boy, that will be a relief.  I walked over to the Galleria Mall nearby and bought a new, regular, corded phone, and tried to see about buying a portable perch for Aziza at the nearby Petco.  No luck on the latter, however.  I'll find out something.  I may have to buy it online, which I don't like to do, because I think it leaves one too vulnerable to hacking or whatever, but that's just me.

So, these are my main thoughts for today.  What's on your mind, everybody?  Just curious.

I also found another photo of Aziza that I'm particularly fond of, and is one of my favorites. (14.12 / 8)
Here it is:

Homecoming of Aziza

Aziza is in one of more exuberant moods in this photo, and, as some people have pointed out, she looks like she's doing a dance.

Anything on your minds, all?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

good morning, Miki! (14.67 / 6)
this is one of my favorite's of your dancing little girl, too! she's just beautiful!!!

Hi, newpioneer! (15.00 / 6)
Thanks for the warmhearted compliment.

How're you today, newpioneer?  How's Juan?  How's Thor?  How're the rest of the animals doing?  Hope you're all doing well.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
all's well, sweetie (13.80 / 5)
Juan and the herd are all ok, and we're still trying to get Thor better. the little guy is still eating VERY well, so we've not lost hope.

Glad everything's going well with you, Juan and the animals, newpioneer. (13.80 / 5)
I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for Thor.  The fact that he's eating very well is a good sign.

well... (12.40 / 5)
it's time for his vitamins and antibiotics concoction... and he WON'T be happy 'cause he'll be expecting his bottle! so I think I'll pull a switcheroo on him... squirt a bit at a time of his medicine in the side of his mouth while he's chowing down on his bottle - now, if I only had three hands!!! I'll let ya know how it goes  :O)

Decisions, decisions... (8.14 / 7)
It's only about 148 this morning, so I'm wondering if I should bring a jacket out with me?

Probably won't need it for this afternoon, though.  Should be back up in the 210's by then.

Hope everybody has a great day!  And stay cool, if you're living anywhere but Southern California (can you believe it's only gonna be like 68 degrees in San Diego and LA today?)!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

at 148 (10.33 / 6)
At 148, I would definitely need several layers of goosedown over my wool socks and long johns. If you can get by with just a light jacket, you're a real eskimo-type.

I've got 304 here and the heat index is 308, so I'll be wearing shorts and a t-shirt today...

(We are talking Kelvin, right?) :)

Hope you have a great day today also...

ugh. Hot here, too (7.40 / 5)
It's not supposed to hit 100 today, I don't think, but it's pretty miserable.  Even King Tut is miserable: I think I will have to put him outside when I go to work b/c I don't want to leave the fan on while I'm gone & the place will be an absolute furnace w/o it.  He'd be better off under some shrubbery than home, today.

Phew... (8.20 / 5)
Just got back in.  It sucks out there!!!

It's apparently 'only' 93 at the moment, but according to the website it 'feels like' 92.  Whoo!

Crap, tomorrow it was supposed to 'cool down' again into the 80s, but now they're calling for 95.  Bah!  It should only be in the 70s here these days... :/

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Ugh! (13.40 / 5)
If it's any consolation to you, JayinPortland, the weather's not really any better out here right now.  I thought we were supposed to get some relief starting today.  The weatherman was wrong!  Hah!

100 here (8.60 / 5)
today tomorrow & sat.
but i swear it was more than that. my thermo in the shade said 101 & the air was still- NO breeze.  :-(

it was soo hot last night (nearly 80) i didn't hardly sleep, so i napped off & on all day on the couch.

& we still have august to get thru.

FP of the local paper (9.00 / 3)
said it hit 100 Wed., fourth day of the heat wave.  I think it's "only" supposed to be mid-90s tomorrow.  And humid.

It drizzled a bit on my home from work, but waited to start really raining until I was about 1 or 2 blocks from home.  If we had managed to get everything done even ten minutes earlier...grrrr.  King Tut managed to avoid the rain, though: only his paws were damp when he came in for dinner.  And I think the rain stopped already.  grrrr

Great post Miki (12.67 / 6)
I love it!  I was LOL at your description of Azizas antics.  :)  And I don't think I have to tell you how much I enjoy pictures of your girl.

Whats on my mind today is all the stuff I have to get done.  The vet is supposed to have some special food we ordered for Lala in today (She lost that weight she had gained.  I think the gain was just from impaction.) so I need to pick it up, go to the farm market for veggies for her, water the gardens, take Kate to work and back, and cut 2 feet of hair, and 3 inches of beard off my son.  Dales best man in a wedding this weekend and needs lots of grooming done so he doesn't look like a caveman.

talk about a full plate! (13.75 / 4)
makes me feel guilty for taking the day off - Juan's in charge of Thor's feeding and cleaning today! of course, I can't sleep a wink from worrying, but I'm sure all will be fine  :o/

loving scritchins for Lala, as always, sister. hope she loves her new food and starts putting on a bit of weight. my best thoughts are with her.

and good luck with Dale (you cracked me up with your caveman comment :O) - sure hope the groom recognizes his best man!

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
The groom (12.50 / 4)
will recognize him but maybe not anybody else.  ;)  Heck, he just shaved his beard off and pulled his hair back in a pony tail (He usually wears it loose.) for the engagement party last year and one of the fellows he plays D&D with every week was sitting across from him when the fellow asked the groom where the rest of the D&D crew were. He hadn't recognized Dale at all.

I doubt Lala is going to like her new food.  Its just a finer grind of what we were trying to give her at the begining.  I figure I have a better chance of some getting down her throat if its thinner. And like Thor, Lala doesn't like her liquid B vitamin either.  She is still eating her nickle and dime sized baby lettuces, watermelon, and some herbs.  And celery juice is her beverage of choice.

Don't feel guilty for your day off.  You need it to regroup your spirit.  Katie was off work Monday and I know I sure was better off for not being responsible for all Lalas care.  Even if you can't get any sleep, rest is still good.  I probably wouldn't be able to sleep either.

Sending tons of love to envelop you, Juan, Thor and the rest brother.

Heh (12.33 / 3)
The fine grind food is much better.  It disolves well so I can just suck it up in the small syringe.  Lala didn't want it straight so I sucked up half a syringe of the critical care and finished filling it with her celery juice and she gobbled several of them right down.  :)

All the piggies used to love Critical Care but then Oxbow changed their packaging and must have changed what they use for filler.  It doesn't disolve like it used to, or have the same smell.  Some of the pigs will still eat the new formula, but Lalas not one of them. They changed the formula on their vitamin c too and the pigs don't like it as much.  I'm so glad I found out they have the fine grind and ordered some.

[ Parent ]
hand in hand (11.60 / 5)
grinding and syringing! and thanks to you I'm gonna start mixing Thor's meds with the pediasure, which he loves, instead of the pedialyte. it just has to taste so awful, even trying to syringe it in his mouth while he was sucking on his bottle didn't work at all and I had to force feed him. and I just bet that Thor would love celery juice, too  :O)

and I picked a hell of a day to take off and try and get some sleep. I thought it was Guadalupe bleating like crazy through the window for Thor, as always, but when I finally woke up Juan let me know it wasn't her at all... it was Esperanza that had deposited a little surprise for me at the back door... Juan said he refused to wake me up and let me know 'cause he thought I'd be pulling my hair out - I've been going on and on and on and on for the past week about no more babies - no more bunnies, no more ponies, no more kids. but Papo snuck this one in on me because I didn't breed Esperanza this year. so much for me thinking I had everything under control... Espe is our milk goat, so she always has udders, and she really didn't show at all, I guess 'cause she was only carrying this one baby girl, even though she's a BIG baby.

the FSM just laughed at me, but newborns always make my heart sing and I really needed the boost. but NO MORE! ya hear me FSM?

Oh newp :) (13.67 / 3)
This comment took me all over the place. mmgrmphthahaha, ROFLMAO, gha, you make fireflys dance, and of course this makes my butt light up.

She's a beautiful surprise. :)  Baby animals make my heart sing too.  They always seem to comfort me like nothing else can.

Will Esperanza have to be on maternity leave until she's done nursing the baby?  And do you have any others that could take over her job?

[ Parent ]
she was a surprise, alright! (10.25 / 4)
and if it wasn't for Thor, I'd really be in a fix. since he got sick, I haven't milked her. hell, I haven't been able to do much of anything around here except the bare essentials :o/

here's the thing, if I HAD been milking Esperanza, I could have taken the baby's "first milk", the colostrum that momma produces only once just before giving birth that the baby has to have for her immune system and to survive. there's just no way I could have handled having to bottle feed another baby around the clock with colostrum replacer formula. I'm just trying to look on the bright side and take my small miracles where I can get them!

and to me, Thor is doing much better tonight. his appetite is bigger, and I get excited each time he has a muscle twitch. plus he's really been wagging his tail each time he poops, much more than a few days ago! gha, I still can't believe I'm getting emotional over goat poop and a wagging tail - it's official, I've completely gone bonkers... as soon as he's back outside playing with his sisters then Juan can check me in somewhere to get my head examined!!

just kidding, of course... you'd fall in love with 'em immediately, and I guarantee MrD can build better fences than I can! maybe it's just our sandy soil, but even when I put my posts in 2 ft. of concrete, it only takes Papo a couple of days to have 'em lying flat on the ground, the shit.

My response to the song of the day (14.00 / 5)
Drums from Japan on the song of the day made me think of drums from India.
If you like percussion at all, give these guys 2:30 and you'll be hooked for the full 9:12. I'm not typically a solo percussion fan, but these two have some serious rhythm goin' on, and there is a melodic quality to the tabla drums.  I've been a fan of the rhythms of Indian classical music for a long time now.

I love the way these guys speak the rhythms and then play them, and trade back and forth between the two players... This is a rendition of the Teen-tal tala from the Northern Indian tradition:

A tala is a rythmic sequence formula.

"Each tala is a number of beats in duration. The beats have different degrees of emphasis within a tala..."

The Teen-tal or Tintal tala consists of:

16 beats, divided 4 + 4 + 4 + 4:

and is represented in the spoken form by the syllables

incessantrevolutions, thank you! I'm an old drum corps nut from way, way back so I really loved this. and the taikos from today's song were equally impressive.

when I marched drum corps, our entire percussion section could "speak" all of their parts, and I was always amazed. not on the same level with what you presented above, here's a bit of what immediately came to mind as me and Thor were listening...

awesome! (14.00 / 4)
I was in marching band in jr. high and high school, and am also a longtime drums corps fan. My band directors always used to watch the corps' for show ideas and make us watch videos of their performances for proper marching technique, etc. I've actually been to a few DCI events. It's been a long time since I've been to a live event, but I always enjoyed them tremendously.

my h.s. band director also turned me on to drum corps, and he took us every year to DCI South when it was in Birmingham, and a few shows in Atlanta. but didn't march corps (Spirit of Atlanta) until college. I haven't been to a show since 07, but I still listen to my cd collection all the time - it drives Juan nuts! just can't listen to corps without the walls shaking  :O)

how much I'd love to see a live show this year! for now I'll have to rely on the podcasts HERE, and wait for this year's dvds  :o/

if you could catch the 2 day event in Dallas, July 22 & 23, you'd be able to see all the top 12 just a couple of weeks before finals (Indianapolis, Aug 12-14 this year, no way I can make it so I'll have to rely on the podcast of the semifinals again.

you could also catch the Blue Devils and Phantom in Lafayette on the 26th, and another good show with the Vanguard and Phantom in Ocean Springs, MS on the 27th  :O)

the schedule's HERE

until DCI decides to put PR on the tour, I guess I won't be able to catch a live show till I'm stateside again  :o/

here's the summer trailer for ya!

Confession: (15.00 / 4)
My least favorite part of certain tunes is the never-ending drum solo.

But I adore steel drums.  Steel drum bands sometimes played at street fairs, etc., in NYC and I loved watching them tune up their kits with ball peen hammers.

Well (14.67 / 3)
I got to recommend her diary but I keep getting failure messages when I try and open her tip jar comment or expand all comments.

So if you're out there puzzled I tried to tip you too.

[ Parent ]
Really? (14.33 / 3)
I just always have it set to "expand all comments" and if there are too many, I go to the permalink via the diarist's page.  (Or if it's on the rec list with about 450 comments, I wait until it hits 500, at which point the site will direct you to the permalink version.)  So Ria's link took me to the story plus comments, and there are some funny ones.  What's your browser, Alma?  Could that be the problem?

When I had (13.00 / 3)
Comcast I always had it set to expand all comments.  It took me a few weeks after getting AT&T and freezing up continually when I'd go into a diary before, I think it was Ria, mentioned collapsing them to someone else. I had forgotten I could set it that way.  Now, at least most of the time, I can read the diaries without it freezing.

AT&T really sucks.  In the past few weeks we've had them out 4 times for losing tv, phone and internet several times a day.  We've had both inside and outside people and the one yesterday does both, but last night a few hours after she left it started going out again.  It was going off every few minutes and I just gave up trying to be online.

[ Parent ]
I had AT & T at one point, as well as dial-up for the internet, (14.50 / 4)
and they both totally sucked....bigtime.  I was glad when I finally ended up getting DSL.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Okay, just saw your new Open (11.00 / 3)
where you mentioned an AT&T tech & wondered...

I'm with Miki: dial-up totally sucks.  I had that before moving here, where I finally could get Verizon DSL.  I've heard that Verizon has its own problems -- I actually got the number for tech support before I could get the whole thing set up -- but once it was set up, I was fine.  (Crossed wires in the box turned out to be the problem.)

So I don't know from AT&T but based on your experience, I really don't want to.  We have Comcast here, but they're way too expensive for my budget.

Hoping some techie will finally fix the problems for you {{{Alma!}}}

Thanks for the heads-up, Ria (15.00 / 3)
I saw that on the rec list when I got home but was afraid to open it (too many pics interfere with my online radio) but you liked it so I did...the radio hiccuped but went on & it's such a terrific story.

The name Banksy was vaguely familiar to me but I couldn't remember why.  Now that I've seen some photos of (his?) work: just, wow!  And the political content of the art: wonderful & wonderfully ironic.

I seriously love this song (14.50 / 4)

Lyrics:

Pressure pushing down on me
Pressing down on you, no man asked for
Under pressure, that burns a building down
Splits a family in two
Puts people on streets

That's ok
It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming, "Let me out"
Pray tomorrow, gets me higher
Pressure on people, people on streets

Chippin' around, kick my brains around the floor
These are the days it never rains but it pours

People on streets, people on streets

It's the terror of knowing what this world is about
Watching some good friends screaming, "Let me out"
Pray tomorrow, gets me higher and higher and high
Pressure on people, people on streets

Turned away from it all like a blind man
Sat on a fence but it don't work
Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
Why, why, why?
Love

Insanity laughs under pressure, we're cracking
Can't we give ourselves one more chance?
Why can't we give love that one more chance?
Why can't we give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love, give love?
'Cos love's such an old fashioned word
And love dares you to care for the people on the edge of the night
And love dares you to change our way of caring about ourselves
This is our last dance

This is ourselves under pressure, under pressure, pressure

Brilliant song (14.75 / 4)
I've loved it since it came out.

Also from that era (but maybe off-topic) My Life in the Bush of Ghosts by Brian Eno and David Byrne.  Again: brilliant.
