Weighing in on a Thursday: Open Thoughts: 1960's Music:

by: mplo

Thu Jul 15, 2010 at 01:21:43 AM EDT

Hi, everybody!

Part of last week's Thursday's Open Thoughts was sort of a prequel to what I have planned for this week's Open Thoughts Thread on my part.  For some reason,  I keep missing the music from the mid to late 1960's, and wishing that they'd play them more often than they do on the radio station (s) here in our area.  I loved listening to many of those oldie-but-goody songs of my era, and have one rather large regret;  the fact that I never got to dance to any of that music, due to my relative isolation from most other kids, and the fact that, perhaps, due to the way in which I'd been hardwired even before birth, my emotional development precluded that, even though I was of average intelligence and my physical development was normal.  Nonetheless, that hurt, and I couldn't even accept myself, which probably made me even more isolated.  Anyway, here are some favorite songs of mine from that period:

mplo :: Weighing in on a Thursday: Open Thoughts: 1960's Music:
Since my mood has been somewhat exuberant lately, I've longed for some of the more exuberant music of my era;  the mid to late 1960's.   However, I'll just insert a handful of some of my favorite 1960's songs, since there are too many favorites of mine from that era to mention! These two songs below indicate exuberance, and not being bothered with hassles that come up.  Sitting on the beach groovin' away seems to be the way that these guys  indicated their amble-along-in-life, but exuberant attitude at the same time, if one gets the drift.

The following song, from 1968, is kind of exuberant, and yet kind of sad at the same time.

Another song from 1968, which is also quite exuberant, but has a rich message of love.  Even though I didn't have any male friends, much less a boyfriend in high school, I couldn't help feel attracted to this particular song anyway.

This following song, by Henson Cargill, also from 1968, while somewhat more downbeat, is also one of my favorite songs.  It also presents an interesting message that, all too often goes unheeded through our society and throughout the world at large;  the consequences of racism.  Interesting song to listen to.

This very sweet song about love, by the Association, also from 1968, too, has a moving affect on me;  exuberant, and yet sad and sweet at the same time.  Very powerful.

The following song, also from 1968, is also a catchy song about love, along with being quite exuberant.

This song, by the Hollies, from 1967, is also quite catchy, with an exuberant beat, despite a wierd message.

Also from 1968, here are some more cool, sad, wierd and exuberant favorites of mine, despite carrying messages about the affects of drugs and alcoholism.

For anybody who's seen the famous movie  "Bonnie & Clyde", with Faye Dunaway, who, btw, did a wonderful job of playing the role of the tough but scared Bonnie,  the following song carries home a strong message.

This is all that I'll post for  now, although more will be posted later.  Hope you enjoy it all.  Thanks for listening to and reading my rambling.

I also might add some postings from 1969 to this Open Thoughts Thread of mine, (15.00 / 6)
although in 1969, the music sort of started to decline and has declined somewhat since, I think.  Here are some songs from that particular year that were also quite wonderful:

http://www.yamelo.com/glen-cam...

This:

http://www.yamelo.com/glen-cam...

is about a young man about to go off to war, without knowing why.  It came out during our Indo-china conflict, written by Jim Webb, but Glen Campbell sings with with much emotion and aplomb.  This song, imho, could be construed as an anti-war protest song, in its own right, I think.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm pretty sure... (13.00 / 5)
although in 1969, the music sort of started to decline and has declined somewhat since, I think.

I'm pretty sure music always declines, for all of us, once we near the end of high school.

In my case, I think pretty much everything that's come out after 1995 sucks!  An abomination!  So-called "music".  I call it a loathsome, abhorrent, harrowing assault on the ears, and a few other senses for good measure!

;)

Don't even get me started on the stuff my daughter and my nieces and nephew listen to.  Shoes in a dryer have more rhythm.  Yes, I'm a grumpy old man already.  Now excuse me while I go yell at some kids to get off my lawn sidewalk.  I don't care that they also live in our building, either!

Heh heh.

I will listen to these songs tomorrow, when I can turn up the sound on the computer...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

I think you're spot-on with this, JayinPortland. (15.00 / 5)
This:

I'm pretty sure music always declines, for all of us, once we near the end of high school.

is something that I never considered, although it's probably true.  Each generation has its own type of music that they love best and prefer listening to.  In my case, this:

In my case, I think pretty much everything that's come out after 1995 sucks!  An abomination!  So-called "music".  I call it a loathsome, abhorrent, harrowing assault on the ears, and a few other senses for good measure!

began to be mostly true starting in 1969, continuing into the 1970's, and snowballing from the 1980's and beyond, although there's still some good stuff to be had.  It's just tougher to find.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Heh... (14.40 / 5)
And yes, I was also kidding about yelling at kids on our sidewalk.

If only more American cities had kids playing on sidewalks (or hell, if even more American cities just had sidewalks!), our country would be a much better place.

Now excuse me while I go begin my annual re-read of Jane Jacobs' The Death and Life of Great American Cities...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
I see your point, JayinPortland, and l (15.00 / 4)
I knew right away that you were just being snarky about yelling at kids on the sidewalk.  I've heard of Jane Jacob's book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, although I haven't read it yet.  I'm sure I could have it ordered for me at a bookstore in my area.  It sounds like an interesting book. The following songs, although not as exuberant, not only have a nice beat to them, but they carry important messages.

http://www.yamelo.com/the-lovi...

The following song also has a message that resonates even today;  about pollution of the rivers not only here in Boston, but throughout the United States and throughout the world.

http://www.yamelo.com/the-stan...

The following song depicts a soldier's feeling hungry for his girlfriend's/wife's love   on his way home from war, and he can't wait to get back home to her and the love they have together.  One may not be crazy for the video, but, the more one thinks about it, the more fitting it seems, if one gets the drift.
http://www.yamelo.com/paul-rev...

This Beach Boy's song is about the "good vibrations" given to a guy by his girlfriend:

http://www.yamelo.com/the-beac...

There's more coming, on other posts, so stay tuned!

I tried to embed the youtube videos, but it didn't work for me, so I did it the old way, if one gets the drift.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

LOL, Jay, for me it was after college (15.00 / 5)
I mean, I liked some of the music being played in high school, but the Talking Heads & Blondie & The Eurythmics & the whole British New Wave scene really grabbed me.  And disco, for dancing to, when it was still fresh.  (There was a disco cover to the theme from Star Wars that was musically very funny & also a great dance tune -- especially the cantina scene theme bit.)  Tonight's Late Night Karaoke has another song I really love.

Miki:

As far as '60s music, I've always really enjoyed The Beach Boys & the song "Bus Stop," I think by the Animals.  Nancy Sinatra's "These Boots Are Made For Walking."  "Love Potion No. 9."  Exuberant, yes, and funny, too.  And of course Arlo Guthrie doing "Alice's Restaurant," which is also hysterical.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

My love for rock-n-roll music started in the mid-1960's, with the Beatles' first appearance here in the United States. (14.40 / 5)
It was in the spring of 1964, when my sister and I were visiting relatives who then resided in one of the towns that abutted my old home town.  The Beatles made an appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, and my sister and I watched.  Although I was skeptical at first, I liked what I saw and heard of the Beatles, and I began to like them, and much of the rock-n-roll that followed.  As a seventh grader, I loved the Beatles, like most of the kids in my grade, and in school.  It was pretty wild--Beatles cards sold like crazy, kids sang the songs while on the bus on the way to and from school, and it was a hell of a good time, in many ways.  The following songs epitomize this great beginning, imho:

morning Miki! (14.17 / 6)
sure did enjoy all these tunes, thank you. hope ya don't mind that I edited all the youtubes into your great open for today (actually I needed something to do in order to keep me awake for Thor's 4am feeding :O)

here's my contribution to the songs of the 60's

I'm gonna try and get some sleep in today, so I'll talk to ya later this afternoon / this evening. thanks again for the tunes, and please give your girl some hugs from me!

Good morning, newpioneer! (14.00 / 5)
Thanks for your great contribution to my Open Thoughts, and for the compliments,  newp.  Simon and Garfunkle has always been one of my favorite groups, and "Sounds of Silence" one of my many favorite songs.  Sorry you've had such a rough and tough road to hoe, with Thor, Juan and all.  Glad to see that Thor's recovering.  How's Juan doing?  How's your friend, Helga, the one with all the birds?  How're the rest of the animals doing?  Just curious, in all cases.   I send everybody my regards.

Sounds like you need the sleep--talk to you later--you're welcome for the tunes.  I'll give Aziza some scritchings for you and all the other Fireflies.

Btw, there are more tunes coming!  Stay tuned!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

In other news... (3.00 / 7)
I just got a call last night from my closest friend back in NJ, and found out that a mutual friend of ours (he was much more a friend of my friend's than he was of mine, but I certainly considered him a friend as well) passed away yesterday.

He was 32.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Oh, Jay, I'm so sorry for you and your closest friend's loss. :( (15.00 / 6)
My thoughts are with you during these dark and difficult times.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Thank you, Miki... (15.00 / 6)
My thoughts this morning are mostly with my aforementioned friend (the one who called me) first and foremost, though.

Jimmy (our deceased friend) was pretty much the last person besides me that he knew from childhood, and his passing hit him hard.  He's not doing too well right now, and I called my sisters last night (they still live near him back in NJ) so that they can let him know he has people nearby he can visit / talk to.  Unfortunately, I can't make it back there anytime soon.

My best friend Glenn, who was also a good friend of Chris (my aforementioned friend) passed away almost 10 years ago; and Chris and I have also lost Mikey and Alex, two of our other close friends, over the past 8 years as well.  Mikey 7 years ago and Alex 3 years ago.

Chris also currently has a second child on the way, and let's say "domestic problems".  I can't live his life for him, but I sure as shit wish I could somehow come up with a way to be out there in Jersey with him for a week or two, buy him a beer and let him know that he still has real friends...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

WOW Jay (13.67 / 6)

Thanks.

Yeah... (8.80 / 5)
That's just life, I guess?

I also lost a slightly older cousin a year and a half ago, he was homeless and froze to death on the streets of northwest Ohio.

My middle name comes from my mother's brother, the uncle I never met, who was murdered by the Passaic, NJ police at 19.

And oh, there's too much more to even go into right now.  Sorry for being a downer...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

For you Miki!

Cat Stevens is another favorite singer of mine, and this is a favorite song, even though it probably came out later than the other songs that I've posted on here.  Thanks for that beautiful post!

Newp, if you're listening in, thanks for editing my first youtube posts into my Open Thoughts thread.  It looks great.

Good luck with everything, both of you.

Hi, newp! (14.00 / 3)
Thanks for the beautiful video here!   Bridge Over Troubled Water is a favorite 1960's song of mine, also.  For that matter, so are these:

So, to continue with all the 1960's music, (14.67 / 3)
wow....I could carry on like this for days, maybe....listening to those oldies on the computer before putting my favorite links in.  Here's another catchy one from that period:

http://www.yamelo.com/syndicat...

The following song, Town Without Pity, from the early 1960's, has a sombering message about the consequences of bigotry and intolerance, and how it can and often enough does tear people apart.  This was a song whose message was way ahead of its time:  Sorry I couldn't find a better video for it, but it's a nice song.

http://www.yamelo.com/gene-pit...

This other song depicts the sadness of the departure of a loved one:

http://www.yamelo.com/hermans-...

Incidentally, I saw Peter Noone, of the Hermits Hermits, at a free concert one Saturday night at the Charles River Esplanade/Hatchshell here in Boston.  The above-posted song was one of the ones he sang, as well as most of the other Hermit's Hermits.  What a cool concert that was!!

I have (11.25 / 4)
a Peter Noone story.

When my sis and her husband first started dating they were 14 and my brother in law was in a local "band". Peter Noone is friends with one of the families in town and had come to visit at about the same time my BIL and sister started going out.  My BIL and his band played for Peter.  Poor Peter!  LOL

[ Parent ]
What a story, Alma!! (14.67 / 3)
So, you know Peter Noone??!?  How about that!  Isn't that a fact!

This is such a coincidence...and a small world!!

Thanks for sharing this story.  It's cool!

I don't (11.00 / 3)
know him.  One of the local rich families does.  I was only 5 when this all happened.

[ Parent ]
Ah, OK. I stand corrected. (14.33 / 3)
Thanks for the correction, Alma.  Still, even though you were quite young and you didn't know Peter Noone, it's still cool that you got to hear the gossip.

For different reasons...

mplo, you'll recognize the tune.

And newp, you'll recognize a musician who has had a great influence on drum corps and marching band music. How many times have you heard "Gospel John" played on the field?

Maynerd Ferguson didn't really hit the big big time until the 70's, but he was well known and appreciated much earlier than that...

fantastic, irev (13.00 / 7)
thank you!!! amazing how you chose Maynard, I've been playing my trumpet all day here (it's my ultimate stress relief). at the conclusion of our ceremony at Thor's garden, I played him, Make our Garken Grow, from Candide. he'll be forever surrounded by these miramelindas - in English their impatiens, but here they grow wild and never die back, and the translation of miramelinda is, look at me I'm beautiful. just perfect for our baby boy!
