So I was thinking... (15.00 / 6)
What am I gonna do today?  No work, unfortunately.  Heh, I still remember not too long ago when long weekends were something I actually wanted!

This is what America and our skewed, totally fucked political and economic system does to you.  Never thought I'd be wishing for a day of warehouse work at near minimum wage (well okay, Oregon's is the 2nd highest in the country after WA but it still ain't shit, although it does put food on the table).

I really never made much, but I've always lived frugally and always managed to live well until just a couple years ago.  Most I ever made in a year was just upwards of $40,000 a few years ago.  The same people who want folks like me to starve almost spend half that on a few fucking dinners and bottles of wine these days.

In any other country, we'd be calling for heads on sticks and severed dicks.  But not here.  Not in America, where even many so-called progressives still believe the president who's failed us so miserably shits candy and blows rainbows out of his nose...

Matt Taibbi (as usual) said it best the other day -

The mania for elegiac slobbering is one of the most disgusting things about this country, but you'll never see a clearer example of America's unique capacity for this sort of activity than this Steinbrenner business. When Bruce Springsteen dies, it won't be appropriate to make jokes about millions of Americans fawning over a dead Boss. But in George "The Boss" Steinbrenner's case, it fits perfectly, because Steinbrenner was in every conceivable way the prototypical office tyrant and the fact that he's being uninterruptedly worshipped after his death by a nation of cubicle slaves tells you almost everything you need to know about the modern American psyche.

In no other country do people genuinely love their bosses the way Americans do. They'll go home after 12 hard hours of capricious superiors peeing in their faces, and the very first thing they'll do is call up some talk radio show and denounce the graduated income tax that gives them a break at their bosses' expense. In other countries bosses need to constantly fend off revolts and strikes; in America people tune in by the millions to cheer on an impetuous, bloated asshole like Donald Trump as he ritualistically fires a succession of sheepish sacrificial stand-ins who are clearly chosen for their resemblance to the target demographic. And The Apprentice was just one of many reality shows where people literally jack off to their own job insecurity!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

So to answer the question... (15.00 / 6)
What am I going to do today?  Shit, I guess I'm gonna stay up late again (can't sleep anyways), take a nap in a few hours, and then go out and pick up some tacos from my favorite truck down the street.  Give the finger to Jan Brewer and Joe Arpaio and all the other assholes by supporting my hard-working Mexican friends and neighbors.

Soli-fucking-darity.

And then I'll come back home and read about all the other unemployed American suckasses who want to elect more politicians who'll ship even more of our jobs to Malaysia, and make our lives even harder.

Forget Russian brides.  I think one day there's gonna be quite a brisk market in American mail-order husbands, desperately seeking an Australian or European wife, in a place where one can actually make a living again.

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

i don't think i'd ever heard any of these....
i specially liked the first one!

i don't know why it's like that or how to change it....

i'll be cleaning out a junk closet today, getting rid of stuff

Thoughts... (15.00 / 4)
I have many thoughts on this, but since I'm all old and shit I don't think I can stay up much longer.

;)

Must nap, and then head out for tacos.

Will be back with thoughts late this afternoon...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
This has me (13.75 / 4)
in tears.  Good ones.  :)

I have a nephew that manages a Panera here, but I hadn't heard anything about this.  I just emailed the link to my sis to asked her if he had mentioned it.

[ Parent ]
hey, eagle eye... (6.00 / 6)
enjoy your tacos, I'm goin' back to bed... feel like warmed over shit today. the last thing I need is the flu, but it sure feels like it's creepin' up on me

I sure (15.00 / 4)
hope it's not flu and that whatever it is passes quickly.  Have some chicken soup if you can.  I do believe soup helps.

[ Parent ]
that's exactly what's on the menu! (13.00 / 4)
it's still been raining like mad here, so I took a long, long nap and feel much better! still congested and my head feels about twice its size, but I'm feeling better!!

[ Parent ]
Make sure (13.25 / 4)
you don't overdo it bro.  Get to feeling all the way better before you do more than necessary.

[ Parent ]
thanks, sister! (13.00 / 4)
I'll try and take it easy for a bit longer! Juan's really stepped up with taking care of the goats for the past couple of days, but since Dreamer was born, Dolores has the nasty habit of sneaking up on him and has bitten him on the back a couple of times so he's decided to stay away from the horses for a while. and I'm really glad the downpours have finally let up - that means more time for the babies out of the barn, and a hell of a lot less cleaning for me  :O)

ooh, sorry, newp... (12.50 / 4)
I forgot who I was "talking" to.  Hope the soup perks you up, & glad the storms have abated for now.

feeling much better, Youff! (13.75 / 4)
can't seem to fall asleep (I guess sleeping most of the day will do that!), but it's a beautiful morning and it's a treat to finally see the stars again!

About chicken soup... (14.75 / 4)
Alma & Jay, I do remember reading somewhere years ago (probably the NYT or Daily News) that researchers had found elements in chicken soup that help alleviate colds/flu.  Plus it tastes good & is easy to digest.  And if you don't have homemade in the freezer, there's always Chinese takeout!

[ Parent ]
I don't get sick... (14.50 / 4)
I haven't been physically  sick in years (maybe it's because I don't eat pesticide-soaked foods?), although admittedly I don't really take good care of myself these days (like buying two six-packs on a day I can't find work and then drinking myself to sleep).

You know what makes me sick, though?

Democrats and Republicans.

Fucking scumbags...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Well, sweetie, I can't argue (12.75 / 4)
that point!

The GOP says:  "We're gonna hold our breath until we turn blue!"

er...filibuster

and the Dems say: OMFG!  Don't do that!  Here's a lollipop & btw would you please vote for this bill that will benefit the American public: our voters and your voters alike.

And the rethugs say: nah.  Got my lollipop.  And I hate you and everything you stand for.  I'm gonna go home an' watch Fox Noise.  Fuck you.

Have I summed it up succinctly enough?

Wow, Ria, the (15.00 / 4)

for today and the flash flood warnings have just been lifted, thank goodness. hopefully the forecast holds up and we'll get a couple of days to dry out! I've got the chicken soup on the stove... but some hot tea will have to do - there's not a drop to drink in the house :o(

Just got back (11.00 / 5)
from picking up the ashes, so she is reduced down to a square box, just the weirdest thing. Interesting how heavy it is, she was 70ish pounds when she died.

O! (11.60 / 5)
some things just hit so hard.... & in such weird ways too....
the passing of mrD's mom & my mom within 6 wks of each other left me reeling
asking strange questions of myself
i was just so confused about it all
could make no decisions & feel certain that they were correct...
we did the probates & all but...
keep? get rid of?  those were the hardest for me...
& ultimately i folded in on myself to not deal with it at all.
& so now, ten+ yrs later, i'm coming to terms with it all
& having to go through boxes & boxes & boxes & boxes of stuff
& make those decisions at last

boy can I relate (12.67 / 6)
I have to make a list of my dad's stuff for the probate court, and I've been putting it off all week.  How can a life be reduced to books, clothing and personal possessions?  The monetary value is tiny, the sentimental value is immeasurable.

[ Parent ]
Stuff (15.00 / 2)
oh Ria I can so relate.  Stuff that was dear to THEM, to through away is like throwing them away as worthless.  I had to just put it all back, pictures and all.  I haven't been able to write the obituary or look at pics.  My poor brother is buried in legal, financial stuff and my sister just left and said good luck.  She had to go through it with her husband and his parents so she gets a pass.  With my mom it is her books she was a writer and a lover of books so she read everything.  We have books that date into the 1800's.  I tell people in the family to take what ever they want because I know it is just stuff and god knows I have enough stuff but can I throw it away.......no.

We still (11.60 / 5)
have dad in his box in the closet.  When his favorite cat, Spirit died we added his ashes in with dads.  Every so often we go on a spree looking for some kind of container either shaped like a cat or with cats on it that will hold 2 adult cremains (moms going in too when its time)and a cat.  So far we haven't had any luck finding the purrfect container.

I remember how odd it was when we picked dad up.  Mom set his box on the kitchen table and we all just sat around looking at it for awhile as we chatted.  It took awhile (weeks, I think) before he made it to the closet.  Its been 8 years and it seems normal now to say "We still have dad in his box in the closet."   At first it felt a little surreal.

[ Parent ]
the only ashes we have (11.60 / 5)
are of our dogs and cats. most of our friends and family think we're completely nuts for cremating our babies, so it warms my heart that you have Spirit's ashes with your Dad's.

It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see. ~ Thoreau ... and, do no harm

[ Parent ]
I don't think you're nuts at all (11.60 / 5)
And its more than just us that do it.  I've been wondering since Robert Byrd died what they did will his dogs ashes that he kept on his dresser.  I heard him mention it several years ago on the floor of the senate and its always stuck with me.

Spirit needed to be with dad.  They were best buds.  When dad died Spirit was laying with him and was still laying with him when the funeral home people came to pick dad up.  Spirit had to be physically moved so they could take dad.  He mourned right along with the rest of us afterwards.

Its similar here (13.50 / 4)
My home page weather link says its 91 and feels 102.  About an half hour ago it said feels like 104.  That doesn't happen often in Michigan.  Looks like the severe thunderstorms just missed us and our thunderstorm warning has been cancelled.

[ Parent ]
I didn't even take an umbrella (13.25 / 4)
to work when I saw "scattered" and "isolated" thunderstorms in the prediction, and the top percent chance was only 55%.

We didn't get one drop.  It's incredibly muggy, still, and quite hot, even though they were calling for an overnight low of 74.

we had (9.00 / 3)
20% chance of rain... so after sweltering heat where even the chickens only wanted to lie in the shade, we got rain long about sundown- big fat rain, that only made it muggier & cooled it off only a little.

it's 'most 7am here now & the temp is 84 & has risen 8 degrees in half an hour!

asimbagirl over at Orange did the Top Comments tonight, and I went there mostly b/c it promised spaghetti.

She did not disappoint.  She wrote that she likes this recipe b/c it's fast & easy, can be made in one pot, and her picky eater will eat it.  I think it sounds pretty good, too, esp. if you use Italian sausage.  What do y'all think?
