Sunday Open Thoughts

by: Alma

Sun Jul 25, 2010 at 00:13:37 AM EDT

Ever have one of those days when you're busy and running late all day long, with not enough hours to get everything done?  And looking back you don't see where you've accomplished much of anything? Saturday was one of those days for me, so I'm sorry but you guys get ripped off with just a cute kitty picture. :(

I did get one thing accomplished.  I got Lala's measurement for her chin sling sent in, so we'll hopefully have it in 5 days or so.

I'm hoping to catch up on everything today.

Happy Sunday All!

Got a whole crapload... (13.00 / 5)
...of cool pictures yesterday at the Division-Clinton Street Fair.

Now for the hard part, uploading and editing and putting together into diary.

Gha, maybe tomorrow.  It's late.

;)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Can't wait (15.00 / 4)
to see them!

Hope the loading and editing run smoothly. :)

Snafu... (8.50 / 4)
Okay, thought I had this figured out but I obviously don't.  Giving up for now, I'll try again later or tomorrow.  Grrr...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Hmmm, okay... (10.50 / 4)
Well I just figured it out (again), but I can only do it for one friggin' photo at a time?!  Every time I tried to export a group, it refused to accept the size dimensions I entered.  Did the same exact thing just selecting one photo, and it works again...

One Of Those Days...gha! (9.60 / 5)
It's a full moon.  Of course I had One Of Those Days.

Yesterday was Good.  I was on the floor, putting away groceries and restocking stuff, until 8 p.m.  And working with my favorite 18-year-old (he started at 16 & so is fully trained by now: he'll even go into the walk-in freezer.  LOL, even I won't willingly do that!)

Today?  For four hours I had to try to train a newbie (also 18 & while I like his parents -- they are regular customers -- he has a long way to go before "work ethic" and his name belong in the same sentence).  FSM, it would have been less taxing to just do the stuff myself.

Dairy delivery.  The driver warned me -- and I like this particular driver, he's no-bullshit -- that the cooler was going to be very ugly when he was done.

OMFG.

They sent 7 skids.  We weren't that low on most stock to begin with.  I told the newbie to restock another cooler after the delivery: he didn't even try.

Can't say I blame him.  I usually dig through the creates to find the gallons or half-gallons I need.

Not today.  They're stacked too tall and too deep.

If there's a silver lining in all this, it's here: the hated manager told us to clear out the back room & just put shit on the shelves (where? they are full) b/c his new mgr. is supposedly coming in tomorrow.

After my coworker gave up, I did it.

I do not think the mgr. will be pleased with how I did it.

Completely ignoring rules & regs: I put it wherever it would fit.  That's my new boss's definition of restocking, and I really think the DA (his boss) should see the store in the true way he runs it:

Badly; or, into the ground.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

Its a full moon? (13.80 / 5)
I hadn't even noticed.  I can blame it on that instead of me.  :)

He should be greatful you found some place to put it.  Why do TPTB never show up when you want them to?

Katies been working with a newbie this weekend and last that doesn't understand English very well yet. To top it off they usually have 3 working weekend nights in the summer but its just been him and her this weekend.

[ Parent ]
Poor Katie. (13.75 / 4)
Yeah...I noticed Friday that the moon was pretty full, except for a tiny sliver.  Last night: no missing slivers, afaict.

I hope the idiot manager & his new boss are both gone by the time I get to work.

I, too noticed a full moon all this weekend so far. (12.60 / 5)
It's just Katie's bad luck, Alma.  I'm sorry about their being shortstaffed and Katie's having to bear the brunt of it.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I loved our old freezer... (11.80 / 5)
When i was working at Red Cross Blood Services in 2008, my favorite part used to be looking up frozen plasma bags in the freezer to convert / discard / put on hold.  Used to have to find anywhere from one to ten or more specific bags on any given night, most were pretty easy to find as they were filed away in shelves numerically but every once in a while one got out of place.  And that's when things got fun!

I remember once spending about 35 minutes in the freezer, that's the only time I ever put on a coat and came out for a few minutes halfway through for a break.  Most of the time, I was just in there with my lab coat on.  10, 12 minutes on average I'd say.  You should have seen the others, heh.  Winter wimps!  They used to go in bundled up with gloves and everything, lol!

First thing I used to do every day in july and August after I punched in, I'd walk straight into the walk-in fridge (that's where we kept the blood), that was nice but not as nice as the freezer.  I wish I had a walk-in freezer here!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Whoa! (15.00 / 4)
This:

but every once in a while one got out of place.  And that's when things got fun!

meant that there was danger on the edge of town, if one gets the drift!  Yeow!!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
One of those days??!? (14.00 / 5)
Ohhh......tell me about it!  There are times when I think that there aren't enough hours in the day to do everything that one wants...or has to do!

Part of it, of course, is due to the fact that i'm not good at budgeting my time.  I have to learn to do that!  Gah!  How I wish I could learn and get some advice on learning to budget my time better.  That, imho, might well solve many, but not all, of the problems, if one gets my drift.

I'm excited about tomorrow night!  I'll keep you all posted!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I'm (12.20 / 5)
looking forward to your report Miki.  :)

I used to be good at budgeting my time, but I lost the talent to do it.

[ Parent ]
Thanks, Alma. :) (14.20 / 5)
I'll keep you and everybody else here on firefly-dreaming posted.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

HA! (13.33 / 6)
love the pic, sister! and today, just like yesterday and the day before that, is gonna be another one of those days for me!!! I slept HARD last night, and through most of the morning  :O)  when I finally dragged my ass outa bed Juan had already fed and taken care of ALL the babies - it's a miracle, I tell ya! I've been running around the house looking to see if the FSM has appeared on one of the walls, just to confirm my miracle suspicions...

I'm so glad (13.67 / 6)
you got good sleep.  And happy that Juan is taking a more active part in life again.  He must be feeling better, and IMO him getting out and doing things, feeling that sense of accomplishment, can help heal him so much quicker.  :)

[ Parent ]
(((((Alma))))) (13.17 / 6)
he really is feeling better, and it makes me happier than I could ever express. and being around all the animals always makes him light up. ever since Thor's passing, he's taken the 3 new kids under his wing and babies them like you wouldn't believe! now he loves to sit in the rocker outside and takes turns with each of them in his lap, singing and talking up a storm to them for hours  :O)

I'm all (14.00 / 6)
happy, teary at this brother. It does more than make my butt light up.  :) I've always found the healing of my soul in animals.  And a healthy soul goes a long way in healing a body.

[ Parent ]
I, too am glad that Juan is feeling better, newp!! (11.50 / 4)
It sounds as if taking care of all the animals makes him happy, and that happiness is the way to healing.  Here's hoping that things continue on the up and up for you, Juan, and all the animals!  :)

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

thanks, sweetie (12.00 / 4)
wishing you all the best, as well

The mistake I was making was embarrassing.  Let's not dwell on it. ;)

This is the funniest picture ever, imo.  Notice how only one person is looking off the side at me and the camera while everyone else is looking ahead at the crowd?  That one person is Amanda Fritz, Portland CIty Councilwoman.  It's true what they say about pols and cameras!  Heh, I like her.  She's been very good.

In this shot, the mayor must have found a different camera though -

Here (it's a big one!).

I'll post here in a bit...

Tlhanks for the link (15.00 / 4)
Somehow I missed it when I was there earlier. (Well, I spent a lot of time in bobswern's diary before coming over here...that's my excuse & I'm sticking to it.  ;)  Looks like you got a lively discussion going on a slow night at Orange.  Tipped & rec'd, btw, and comment dropped in.

Apparently... (13.00 / 2)
...it made the rec list there.  I didn't even check to see, but it was highlighted as being up there in jotter's daily diary list.  So I'll take his word for it!

Your Duck is Dead (7.40 / 5)
A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest.

After a moment or two, the vet shook his head and sadly said, "I'm sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."

The distressed woman wailed, "Are you sure?" "Yes, I am sure. Your duck is dead," replied the vet..

"How can you be so sure?" she protested. "I mean you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something."

The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room. He returned a few minutes later with a black Labrador Retriever. As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked up at the vet with sad eyes and shook his head.

The vet patted the dog on the head and took it out of the room. A few minutes later he returned with a cat. The cat jumped on the table and also delicately sniffed the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.

The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100% certifiably, a dead duck."

The vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman.

The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried, "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead!" The vet shrugged, "I'm sorry. If you had just taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the Lab Report and the Cat Scan, it's now $150."
