Fun in the Oregon Sun: A Portland Street Fair

by: JayinPortland

Mon Jul 26, 2010 at 03:37:11 AM EDT

We had a little party of our own here yesterday in my neck of SE Portland, and 'blast' could be used in more ways than just what the sun gave us!  90 degrees by noon, yikes!  Street trees abound here fortunately, so my pale and easily-burning Polish-Irish ass had plenty places to hide.

The 2010 Division-Clinton Street Fair, let me show you it!

Our journey begins with a trip to the ATM, and then a bus ride down Hawthorne to 12th.  Need coffee (no not here, I just like this building) and a bagel...

Photobucket

Let's hit Kettleman's...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Okay, fueled and ready to go!

Nah, I couldn't afford a family even if I wanted one... ;)

Photobucket

We're getting there (who knows this walk?)...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Boom!  Here we go...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Waiting for the parade.  Have some BBQ'd flowers in the meanwhile?

Photobucket

Yeah, it's all about finding shade today...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Here they come!

Photobucket

Good FSM, that that... that's Mayor Sam Adams' music!

Photobucket

Photobucket

The Mayor has a posse.  Btw, this is my new goal in life - I want to one day go for a pedicab ride and have numerous people following behind, carrying block letters spelling out "JAY".  ;)

Here comes MAS!  Oh wait, never mind...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Hear the drummer(s) get wicked...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Random randomness, with an "Awwww" shot or two....

Okay roof, whatever...

Let's go check out some of the booths.

Time for lunch.

let's hit one of my favorite taco trucks...

Photobucket

Photobucket

2 cabeza and an al pastor, please..

Photobucket

Oh hey, "Happy Birthday to... wait get back here I wasn't finished singing to you yet!"

Photobucket

Oh well, on over to check out the Clinton Street Dance.

Watch that mister, Mister!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I knew it was  bad idea to hop into that DeLorean.  "Sure, I'd like a riiiiiii.... oh crap!"

Photobucket

Bonus points to anyone who can name this intersection!  The building's still there, it's no longer a bakery but now a restaurant / sports bar.

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

Okay, Doc, Marty and I wired up two buildings, lucked into a lightning strike and the flux capacitor took us back home to 2010 Portland (phew!)...

Photobucket

Photobucket

Ha!  Don't tempt the Jersey Guy.  I don't know if I can pull a Nick Zukin and down 10 Whiffie's Fried Pies in 30 minutes, but I can sure as shit eat a large pie and then some in one sitting (looking down, wondering why I carry an extra 15 or so pounds these days...)!

Photobucket

Too hot to eat (again).  Pick up a limeade instead...

Photobucket

Okay, time to head back down to Powell and catch the bus back home to Chavez.

Photobucket

Home, sweet home...

Photobucket

Guzzle water, nap.  Crap, it's hotter in here than it is outside!  Oh well, at least I have a cold shower and a kitchen ceiling fan here.  That's something!  :)

Bonus!

This shot is hilarious to me.  Note that everyone is staring at the crowd straight ahead, while the politician found me and my camera off to the side!  I guess what they say is true, heh.  That's Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz, I love her though... :)

Looks like a ton of fun, Jay! (14.60 / 5)
It was incredibly hot & humid here, too...until just before 2 p.m., when the rain began.  I was on a bus to work, so managed to miss the worst of the storm.  After it blew through (apparently knocking a tree, or at least part of one, into a coworker's kitchen -- she was on her way off shift & freaking out until she could see the damage) we had an absolutely gorgeous day.  Low humidity, cooler temps.

Wish I'd been at your street fair instead of at work, though!

Thanks much for the gorgeous pics.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

i see (14.50 / 4)
why you love it there so...
beautiful town, small town feel, exciting events, gorgeous architecture....
i'd move there but i really couldn't handle all the grey days of winter!
(the only drawback i've seen so far)

Fun in the city! (15.00 / 3)
Wonderful pics Jay.

I am curious about the Oregon sunstone I have never seen it before.  I love translucent stones.

looks like a natural born politician.  Its just a sixth sense they have for cameras.  I'm glad she's one of the good ones.

Looks like it was a wonderful day and lots of fun was had by all. :)
