What's Your Favorite.... **AHA! moment**?

RiaD :: What's Your Favourite ...?

our girl & i were talking the other week....
the princess is growing up, starting to figure out what stuff is...
& how wonderful it is to see knowledge awakening in a childs eyes....

bellegare may2010

making the connections....

Photobucket

i got to thinking of some of my own AHA moments...

how the light of knowledge

Photobucket

breaks through dark clouds of ignorance

& how after these wee-tiny epiphanies i didn't feel quite

Photobucket

anymore

........

like when i first realized

Photobucket

chickens come from eggs!
(i didn't eat eggs for about a decade after that)

........

and that the sugar bowl....

Photobucket

doesn't fill itself!

........

or when i realized raindrops

Photobucket

and bubbles...

Photobucket

are little tiny mirrors!

........

or how i realized in second grade...
my clothes were so very different from the other kids

Photobucket

because mama sewed them all

........

most recently my AHA moment came when i realized
we've gone from this....

Photobucket

to this.....

Photobucket

in the blink of an eye....

suddenly we're the older generation!

SOooooooo........

what knowledge has lit up your eyes?

Oh, sweetie, you & Mr. D deserve it (10.83 / 6)
"Aha" moment?  Dunno.

Think I emailed you that I dunno what to do.  Take the risk & move to Berkeley?  Or stay where I have a job, even if it's a job I hate and way beneath my talents...it's a fucking job.

But, oh, I do like Berkeley.  And, y'know, you can grow rosemary out there.  And I know a few people in the city, not just the friend who invited me.

OTOH, I think CA's economy is even worse than PA's.  And Jack hasn't offered me a job yet.

What to do?

is..... (15.00 / 4)
CA economy in your field/with your talents better than PA?

have you contacted everyone you know in the area, asked them about jobs/prospects there?

have you looked at Craig's List in that area?

do the advantages of the area outwiegh where you are?
(climate/temperature, liberal attitudes, access to public transp./farmers mkts/cultural events)

DO think outside the box re:jobs-
not only what you have done, but what you could do

(is berkley near san fransisco?- karma is near there, somewhere)

Berkeley is just a BART away (14.00 / 5)
from San Francisco.  OMG, I love the Bay Area almost as much as I love NYC.  Nothing will ever replace NYC in my heart...but the Bay Area could go a long way toward healing my heart that was broken by leaving NYC.

I still see that ride in my dreams... :) (15.00 / 5)
Love BART, used to ride it everywhere just for fun even.

I lived in Oakland (Jack London Square) briefly in 2007.  I still remember coming up off BART onto Market Street in San Francisco, heading towards Embarcadero and the Ferry Plaza Building / Farmers' Market my first weekend there.  Damn those palm trees are fucking big and beautiful!  Ours here in Portland only grow to about 10 feet, and yeah we didn't have any of those anywhere in Jersey. ;)

And then there was the job I almost got - live-in assistant manager at one of a house/hotel kinda thing on California Street (I think it was), just off Van Ness.  I saw the ad in the classifieds sitting down in Union Square, then immediately walked over there.  Got there and asked about the job, they basically hired the first person who walked in (15 minutes ahead of me).  If I had only been like 20 minutes quicker that day, the last three years of my life would have been completely different (and I'd be JayinSanFrancisco).  Odd to think about these things sometimes, huh?

Loved walking around there, though.  Good thing it doesn't snow and ice with those friggin' hills!  I remember getting scared walking slowly, sideways, down one of them (Russian Hill or something?), because I almost slipped and I don't think I would have stopped falling for about 200 feet!  Chinatown was awesome.

I still prefer Oakland, though.  It's the Jersey in me, I guess.  Give me a choice between Newark and NYC and I'd still take Newark 10 times out of 10.  Just the way I am.  I like a little bit of grit over glitz.

Only went to Berkeley a few times, but hit a couple cool brewpubs.  Never got to eat there, though.  I would have liked to have gone to the cafe (no way I could afford the restaurant!) at Chez Panisse.  I'd also like to eat at Saul's, too.  I guess that's the Bay Area equivalent of our Kenny & Zuke's, 'new school' Jewish Deli.

I was in Oakland at the time Chauncey Bailey, the newspaper editor / reporter, was assassinated in the Lakeside Apartments District near Lake Merritt, where I was looking for an apartment.

Oh my g*d, what a grisly event...and article! (15.00 / 4)
Where did you finally end up living in Oakland, btw?  Just curious.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
I never did actually find a place... (15.00 / 5)
I was looking in West Oakland, Lakeside, Lake Merritt and Seminary, though.

I just ended up staying in a motel in Jack London Square the whole time I was there, before heading back to Portland for reasons that make absolutely no sense to me now.  Well, I guess they did because I eventually found Home here, but still...

;)

Upon rereading my comment (12.17 / 6)
I realize it doesn't make much sense b/c I have omitted large parts of the scenario.

Apologies.

In a nutshell: Old friend, still with (fourth?) hubby, whom I have known longer than I've known her, wants me to relocate to Berkeley & has offered to pay for some moving expenses & let me stay with them.  He owns a bookstore.  If he offers me a job even a part-time job, I am SO there.

But I don't want to leave a job I actually have to go to a place that is shedding jobs like cats shed fur in the spring.

Any advice?

I left... (13.80 / 5)
...the greatest job ever to come here.  Of course at the time, I had no way of knowing the entire economy was going to collapse soon and nobody would ever work again (or at least it seems that way).  But hell, I had a million reasons to leave NJ, foremost of which was the nasty family court stuff that I just felt I needed to get far the hell away and make a fresh start.  And after it ended, for better or worse (worse, much worse) I was pretty much free to go anywhere so I did.

I had a whole bunch of savings, so work was something I'd get when I got wherever I went.  I considered Boston (too cold - hell I'm free to go anywhere I want so why not get away from snow & ice forever?!), Austin (too hot, and it's in Texas - no offense at all to any Texans, I just think I would go crazy living there), Philly (too close to NJ), Santa Fe NM (this was one of my serious finalists), Boulder CO (again, too cold), Madison WI (ditto times ten!), Oakland, Seattle and Portland.

Oakland was my original choice, but then some things happened and I ended up in Portland living with a girlfriend.  That didn't last long so I moved to Oakland and then came to Portland for reasons that make zero sense now.  But well hell, at least I fell in love with Portland!  I really don't want to ever leave here again.

There's actually a roughly 1% chance I may find myself in your situation soon though, Youff.  I might (maaaaaaybe, by a long shot) be able to get a job in Seattle (waiting to hear, it'll be another couple months at least), and if I do I'm going because it's a solid government job and it'll pay more than even my last job in Jersey, and with a lower local cost-of-living.  Who knows though, wait and see I guess...

So what am I saying?  Lol, i don't know.

I always tell myself I'd rather live broke in a place I love (what I'm doing now, heh) than be somewhat 'secure' in a place where I'm totally miserable (fuck you, NJ).  But then again, I'm single and I'm 30 so I guess I'm still mobile for a few more years.  My outlook might change ten or even five years from now, who knows?

i hope, if it's what you want, that you get the job in seattle.
steady work/paycheck goes sooooo far towards lightening... gha! everything.
& seattle's not that bad is it?

"Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one."- Terry Pratchett

[ Parent ]
Oh, not bad at all! (14.80 / 5)
I love Seattle! :)

I do prefer Portland (and Oregon), for many reasons (public transportation, land use laws, the fact that Portland is the best-kept secret in the world* for affordable urban living and great eating**, the street food scene, etc etc), but that's not a knock on Seattle.  I could definitely live there, too!

The main difference is really that Seattle has way more of a "big city" feel than Portland.  Even though we're basically the same size, so go figure...

*Or was until the fucking NY Times became obsessed with us!

**Even our top-tier, world-class restaurants are basically casual dining and cheaper than even middling restaurants in most cities

I just lost a whole reply with links I was creating for you about places you would love to live in Seattle with farmers markets great history and bus service.

Here is the list if you google these areas you will find tons of info.

Queen Anne Hill

Capital Hill

Freemont District

Green Lake

Google P-patch in Seattle and you will get a map of were the city sponsored neighborhood gardens are they are dotted all over the list above.

If you get the job I would love to help you in any way I can.

I do like Fremont and Capitol Hill, myself...

:)

The rents though, ouch!  But well I guess if I'm actually making decent money again...

Seattle sure don't have inner city 600-something per month rents like we do here, eh?

"The greenest building is the one already built" - Carl Elefante

Look at (15.00 / 5)
Beacon Hill and Ballard Areas

West Seattle is another great community but it can be spendy too I think.  I am going on the buying market if prices are high I would guess rent would be higher.

I have been out of the rent market for a long time.  You may have to be here and dig to find the deals.  Places where students live is your best market I think and that would be capital hill and green lake.

I know Ballard! (15.00 / 5)
My mother, my 10-year old niece and I ate at Smokin' Pete's BBQ there in March when they were last here and we spent a day up in Seattle.  Food was kinda just okay, but holy shit the portions were massive!

I was also in Seattle with my dad last month, and we ate at the Steelhead DIner in Pike Place Market.  Damn, that place was good!  I had the Oregon bay shrimp & tarragon salad sandwich, and a couple Seattle beers I can't recall...

Anyways, back to Ballard - I remember making a note to myself that it was a cool neighborhood.  Thanks for the reminder!  Sorta reminded me of SE Division St around my way, or the Beaumont area of NE Portland a little bit...

aha! (14.20 / 5)
I was in college before I put together all the threads of things that happened at a point in history--like Beethoven giving his first concert at age 6 in 1778, Captain Cook was sailing the Pacific, and Voltaire was at his most prolific.

Up to that point, I'd studied things in their own silos--art, history, music, literature, but seeing how they all connected, and trying to make sense of a historical time period by looking at all the events at that time was a real light bulb moment for me.

Dinner tonight--old school.  Tuna salad and fresh bread.  Not exciting, but nice and cool on a very hot night.

(^.^) (14.67 / 6)
in 6th grade i had this really cool teacher (but i've misplaced her name)

she started a mentoring program w/our class...
twice a week a third grade class would come in & we'd help them with spelling & math.
it was great. they learned & we did too.
(after that all the 6th grades mentored all the third grades & 5th mentored 2nd)

but.
the thing i remember best is she had an "open classroom"
we signed a contract at the beginning of the year promising to do our work & try her new system. no homework. lessons only for three hours in the mornings. afternoons we could go to her for her or work on our studies, or paint or go to the library or read a book. anything you wanted as long as you didn't cause a ruckus.
she taught on a time-line of European History
we started (i think) with romans. math was done in roman numerals, science was learning about what the scientists o that time knew, spelling was words of the period (Colosseum, gladiator, etc), history was not only the romans but touched on Asia- later in the year we learned a bit about russia, americas.
we learned about the Art of the time period... and architecture.
& we made, every two or three weeks, a big banner of the time period by tracing filmstrip pictures onto wide paper (this covered the entire back room of the class while we worked on it) then painting them in & captioning. when each was finished it hung in the cafeteria/auditorium.

i thought it was fabulous. everyone loved her class & the other sixth graders were upset that she was so cool & they had regular teachers. our class was always excited to learn... & happy to be there.

gha! i haven't thought of her in awhile.
thanks!

This is awesome Ria (14.00 / 5)
I took a series of seminars and retreats that changed my life splitting it in half before and after, changing the way I viewed everything in my life and beyond. It changed the way I interacted with everyone because I was different.  The name of the series was called Context Trainings.  It changed me forever and changed my life, changing the way I viewed it, never to be a victim again causing me to be accountable for all things happening in my life.

An unintended consequence of this training was, I was working at Boeing at the time as a manager, I took time off to do this program with my boss protesting it took me 6 months to complete.  A year later I was making 1/3 more money as a direct result of the training.

Verrrrry powerful stuff....

As I learned to embrace these notions I had the biggest aha moments of my life this all took place 30 years ago.

This is some of what they taught...

* We create that which occurs.

* Learn to cultivate your own garden.

* The kingdom of heaven is within.

* Everything in the Universe is exactly as it should be. (You may say what the fuck on this but honestly after doing the program you get it, the question is what do you do about it?  How do you react to it?)

* I hear:  I forget.  I see:  I remember.  I do:  I understand.

* If one advances confidently in the direction of their dreams, and endeavors to live the life which they have imagined, they will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.

* Life itself is miraculous, therefore you need never seek miracles.

* It's never too late to have a happy childhood.

* There are no greener pastures.

Newp this is what I was talking to you about via email.  I will write more on it later.

I am off for the day my firefly friends I will be thinking about you....  :o)

My favorite "AHA!" moments; Almost too many to mention, but here goes: (15.00 / 4)
A)  Finally finding a misplaced item under a pile of debris or in a small, dark corner of a room somewhere after having searched for several days, hours, or minutes.

B)  Discovering that my alltime favorite film,  West Side Story,  is coming, either here to the Bay State, or to a movie theatre in a neighboring state, on the great big wide movie theatre screen.

C)  Finally getting a base to fit to a sterling silver bowl that I've just constructed, in preparation for soldering.

D)  Finally finding my keys (which I'm forever misplacing!) on my desk, my bed, or even under a pile of debris on my dining-room/kitchen table or wherever!  Unfortunately, not without a fair amount of freaking out about it beforehand!

E)  Finishing a piece altogether.

F)  Baking a cake.

G)  Finding a street, house, building or store that I've been driving or taking public transportation or walking, in order to get to, after glimpsing at the numbers, and, in the case of driving, irritating the hell out of the driver(s) in back of me.

H)  Finding a delicious dessert or other dish at a dinner buffet that I've been looking for.

I)  Ultimately finding a certain item, such as a book, hair conditioner, some clothing, etc., that I've been looking for, but have had a tough time finding.d

J)  Getting a much-needed package that I've been expecting, or setting up a new item that needs assembling.

K)  Finding a seat on the train, bus, or in a restaurant or ice-cream parlor after waiting awhile.

More later, maybe!

OT: Tropical links (12.00 / 4)
Hi newp,
I've been covered up with work here all of a sudden. I went from one active project to five in the span of three days, none of them easy jobs - but I have done some rearranging of my weather links, just not quite ready to call it organized yet. It's still pretty much a big mess and I'm the only one who could possibly make sense of it. I'm still clearing out links to Katrina-specific info - 5 years later, and making sure links are still working properly. Since we haven't had a lot of activity yet I haven't done the usual seasonal cleanup that happens when I get to rockin' and rollin' on a big storm...

I'm looking forward to using a new set of cleaned up links, though. After a decade of accumulation, my bookmark file is like a hoarder's house - "Oh, yes, the ticket stubs from the 1997 ferry trip in Maine are on the bottom of THAT stack over by the wall in the corner, the one with the orange plastic bags on top - no, no, not the blue plastic bags, the orange ones" - LOL!

Anyway, it looks like you guys are in the clear from hurricanes for at least another short period of time right now. The waves rolling off Africa right now seem to start out looking impressive and then dissipate as they cross the ATL. We do have one or two that bear watching at the moment, though. My guess is that it will be another week to ten days before a big one can start up and survive to make landfall somewhere, but, as always, that forecast could change in the next six hours!

He hasn't posted lately, that I know of, but there was/is a dKos diarist who is also a meteorologist who used to track hurricanes about two-three years ago, if memory serves.

I didn't always understand the scientific language, but I can read a weather map, and he provided plenty of those.

Kinda miss that guy.

Newp: hoping you get some respite from extreme weather.  When I went to work today (yesterday by now) it was very humid, but not as brutally hot as it has been.  Philly is expecting a break tomorrow (my radio station online is out of Philly so I get their weather) and if so, we should get a break tomorrow, too.  I'm about 60 miles west of there.

I still have an account there (13.75 / 4)
Under a different alias and I delurk once every year to leave a choice comment, usually to express my gratitude to someone who has done/is doing something extraordinary at great personal risk for a good cause. I left at the time of the infamous pie fight when the BigK himself dissed "women's studies types". Every time I've crossed paths with a mysogynist I've found out sooner or later that they are also a sociopathic asshole in every other regard, too. And every time some asshole posts a diary with a poll that includes some stupid 'pie' choice, it just reaffirms my decision to stay away as much as possible from the toxicity there...

However, I do intend to do something about the weather. Hang on til Wednesday when I plan to launch a Wednesday Weather Wonk series. I hope to have a plain old wordpress-type blogsite up by then and I will crosspost here. I'm not a degreed meteorologist but I do have formal training in the subject and lots of training in relevant fields as well. I will also try to keep fireflies posted about hurricanes. The season is about to get cranked up.

I don't do local forecasting for 'regular weather'. I'm mostly interested in forecasting tropical cyclones and tornado outbreaks and have focused my self study in those areas. They are quite different tasks and have required me to learn a wide and deep array of weather facts, though.

Hope you get some good sleep and don't have to work too hard tomorrow!
