Alma :: Sunday Open Thoughts
Tales of Embarrassment

Or in this case maybe it should be tails.

We got Lala from my niece.  Her name at the time was Little Miss Pink Pig.  We thought that was quite a mouth full so we changed it to Lala.

All the boars love Lala.  Its cute to watch them try and woo her over.  They love smelling us after we've held her.  She's always had a high estrus and gets cranky from it every few weeks.

Well as some of you know when we had Lala in to Dr Greear a few months ago we discovered Lala was intersexed.  She had parts we didn't know about.  I don't know where her testicles had been hiding but during an exam they were found.  Along with a little penis.  All of us were quite surprized.

Well we were in for another shock yesterday.  Dr. Tim doesn't think she's intersexed.  He thinks she's just a male.  I guess all of us including Dr. Greear were just so used to her being a her, the boars reactions to her, and what we thought was high estrus (nobody can figure that out now) when we found the extra bits we didn't even consider we might have sexed her wrong from the very start.

So now we are all a little embarrassed about the mistake.  Its just a good thing Nikki never got pregnant.  Dr. Tim thinks Lala must be sterile, but I worry that she (yes, she's still a she to me) was only sterile because whatever were holding her testicles up was also blocking her sperm.  We didn't think to tell Dr. Tim the testicles only came down recently.  Nikki has gained weight lately that we had put down to her eating all the food for both of them before we realized Lala wasn't eating.  I sure hope she isn't pregnant.  So now we are going to have to figure out whether to seperate them when Lala is well and ready to go back in the cage, have one of them fixed, or try to just not worry about it and go on like we did before.

Any ideas?

Have a great Sunday!

Enjoy the baby piggies, Alma!  (Guinea piglets?)  LOL!

I hope Lala is cured after her surgery.  Erm...but here's the part I don't get at all:

All the boars love Lala.  Its cute to watch them try and woo her over.  They love smelling us after we've held her.  She's always had a high estrus and gets cranky from it every few weeks.

If in fact Lala is NOT intersexed:

Does this mean all your boars are (gasp) gay?

lololololol!

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

If she's not (11.25 / 4)
intersexed she must be transgendered and really good at hiding her boar smell(and definitly gay because she's always loved the boys as much as they love her).  I also think she needs some anatomy lessons if she's going to be a boar.  While she does hump Nikki a lot (especially when Lala is having her estrus, or whatever it is) she does all dominance humping of Nikkis face or side instead of mounting her.  Maybe she just doesn't know how to do it and thats why there were never any babies.  The tables have flipped some now though.  Since Lala's so little now Nikki has decided she should be top pig and has been side humping Lala when she gets the chance.

We weighed Nikki last night a few hours after I posted this and she's lost that extra weight she had put on so I don't think she's pregnant.  Which is really good because if they don't have a litter before they are 6 months old there's bones that fuse together making it almost impossible for mother or pups to make it through delivery.  If they do have pups before 6 months old then the bones never fuse.

Just wanted to make sure... (12.60 / 5)
...you folks know about my sigline.

Since he decided to trollrate me over at dKos, I've challenged Frederick Clarkson to a debate.

I doubt he'll ever get back to me, because he's afraid of me.

But just sayin'...

Jay I (14.20 / 5)
understand your frustration.  Just keep in mind you have a very deeply personal reason to feel the way you do, which helps you see more clearly than those that haven't experienced your pain.

peace be with you good friend.....

Weighing in on a Sunday morning: (15.00 / 4)
That's an interesting dilemma with Lala, Alma.  Glad she's doing OK.

This afternoon, at around two o'clock, I'm having a couple of friends over to meet Aziza and to socialize.  I'm going to be getting a more powerful air purifier, because the one I've got doesn't pick up enough of the powder that Aziza produces.  It picks up some of it, obviously, or it would be worse, but it's still not enough.  if, by chance the brand I've got really doesn't work for me on the long run, I plan on switching to another brand.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Maybe you need (14.75 / 4)
2 purifiers instead of just a more powerful one?  If the new one doesn't do it, I would try using both at the same time before trying a different brand.

Have fun this afternoon!  :)

[ Parent ]
Thanks for your input, Alma. (13.75 / 4)
Hi, Alma.  I'm getting a more powerful air purifier of the same brand as my present air purifier, except this one has five filters in it instead of only 3:  A pre-filter, a medium pre-filter, a HEPA  (High Efficiency Particle Arrest) filter, which actually traps particles and germs, etc., instead of just spreading them around, a Custom Filter, which, in my case, will be the Pet Allergy Filter (even though I have no allergies or asthma), and a charcoal-activated Carbon filter to trap odors, or whatever.  It covers 815 square feet, as opposed to 780 square feet that my present air purifier covers, and the person who I ordered this newer air purifier from said to try both the one I have and the new one at the same time.

If, however, that failed to work, I'd go to a totally different brand air purifier (such as maybe the Austin air), as a last resort.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

So there you go with community diary nonetheless...

Lala (14.20 / 5)
gets the last laugh!!!

I hate to see you separate them when Lala needs her buddy the most. :o(

I would hate (15.00 / 5)
to seperate them too.  They've been cage mates for over 3 years.  They've been mainly apart since Lala got sick and we moved her into the diningroom with us so we could monitor her food intake and poos.  We bring Nikki out to join her when Katie is cleaning the boar cages and last night we brought Nikki out just because they hadn't had any time together in a few days.

The GOP Plot to Screw the Economy and the Middle Class (15.00 / 5)
This is an easy to understand op-ed on how EVERYTHING the GOP stands for (economically) is bad for you, and why the Democrats are trying to do what they're trying to do, in the face of CONSTANT GOP obstructionism.

LOL (12.67 / 3)
I just read that and posted a comment in the Monday Open Thread.  Damn, ya beat me to it, Timbuk!

But between the two of us, I guess we have this site covered.

The Huffpost piece (15.00 / 3)
is really good.  I especially liked the ending:

Subsequently, the Republicans will balloon the deficit and undermine the economic recovery in order to give more handouts to the super rich. And the middle class will continue to be an accomplice in its own slow-roasted homicide

Wish I knew a way to get info to the low-info voters.  Not by talking to them one-on-one: I mean a major media effort to get the facts out there, and counteract Faux Noise.

OTOH, someone at Orange posted a bunch of comments from people who were outraged when the GOP voted in lock-step against extending unemployment benefits, and a number of the comments ran something like, I've always voted Republican but I never will again.

I think you can fool 25% of the GOP all of the time (those would be the same 25% who still think GWB was the Best President Evah!)...the rest of the GOP voters might be persuaded to vote in their own economic self-interest.

I always use (15.00 / 3)
18% for the GOP dead enders.  That was Cheneys low after shooting his friend in the face.

One of the hardest things to get through to people is about the cloture vote needing 60 ayes.  I saw a poll a few months ago and there are still tons of people that don't know about it and think you only need 51.  So those people are thinking the dems just don't want to do anything since they have a majority of the seats and still not getting important bills passed.

[ Parent ]
OMG (13.67 / 3)
Okay, I'm a politics addict, but: people really don't know that the GOPers are filibustering everydamnthing?

Me?  I still want them to restore the filibuster to its former prominence.  I can't wait to see John Cornyn reading the Manhattan phone book.  Including the Yellow Pages.  Every damn word and phone number.

I couldn't believe (15.00 / 2)
it either when I first heard it but then I thought of all the polls, for years after 9-11, where people still thought Iraq was part of the plot.  Most people remain in ignorance of whats really going on in the political world, especially those Foxspews viewers.  Then you've got the people that think the president can do anything and everything all by himself.  I don't know why they don't understand that its congress that makes the laws.

I believe in the old style filibuster too and wish they would go back to it.

[ Parent ]
Oh, Alma... (3.25 / 4)
I'm just losing it here.  He was so beautiful...even when he bit my foot b/c I wasn't feeding him fast enough!

I was always afraid that "King Tut" was an unlucky name.  I don't have good luck with black cats.  My Chaya disappeared -- this was around 1980-81 -- and the only other black cat I've had since was my poor King Tut, who wanted me to make the pain go away...but I couldn't.

Thanks for all your good wishes, though.

My first (13.50 / 4)
kitty as an adult, Boo was a black one.  We got him a month after we moved out of an apartment into our house.  Boo ended up getting kidney disease when he was 8 and died when he was 12.  I don't think we ever really get over losing our babies. Over the years there's been several times when I've thought I've caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of my eye, the same with my Mirri and Cinnamon.  I know its just wishful thinking in my head but I still find it comforting when it happens.  Its like they are still around checking on me.  Animals give us a love that we can't get from people.

There's nothing worse than having an animal in pain that you can't help.  I've always regreted not taking my Mirri in a day earlier to ease her out of her misery.  It would be so much easier if they could talk.

I can just picture him giving you a nip. I bet you keep all those good memories of Tut and bring them out once in awhile and get a grin.

Did you figure out what to do with him?

[ Parent ]
Alma, I keep looking out the fire escape (15.00 / 1)
window for him -- which would make sense if he'd just disappeared but I already know what happened, so why do I keep looking?

I miss him terribly.  I'm glad I no longer can be evicted for having a cat without permission in my lease -- and I don't know how I could take care of him if we were evicted -- but obviously the joy of having him around was greater than the fear of eviction.

Poor King Tut.  Poor little sweetie.  That's it for me: no more cats unless/until I make enough $$$ to care for them properly & can afford to live somewhere I don't have to hide them from the landlord.

I know honey (15.00 / 1)
its hard.  That always happened to me too.  You open the door and expect to find them even though you know their gone.  Then the sadness sets in cause even though you already really knew they weren't going to be there, it kind of reaffirms it and makes it real.

Its not like you weren't responsible with Tut Youff.  You were.  When he came home hurt after his scuffles you took care of him and got him veterinary care when needed. I don't think it would have mattered if you got him to the vet the minute you found him on the roof. There's just some things we can't take care of.  I do know he was a whole lot better off with you than he would have been without you.

I hope things improve with your situation so you can get a place that allows pets because I agree its a whole lot better for you not to be violating your lease.  I sure don't want you out on the street. But its not like you did it on purpose in the first place.  Tut picked you, not the other way around.

[ Parent ]
True, that. (15.00 / 1)
Maybe putting him to sleep right away would have been more humane.  But I didn't (don't) have enough money.  Probably I should have named him Lucky: maybe he would still be alive.

Magical thinking, I know.  Damn, but I miss the little fucker.

[ Parent ]
If I remember correctly (0.00 / 0)
he wasn't acting that bad so you had no reason to think he would need to be put to sleep.  It would be so much easier if animals could talk human talk so we would know.  But they don't and they also try to hide illness which makes it even more difficult.

And I miss hearing about Tuts antics.

[ Parent ]
PS: Thanks, Alma, for understanding (3.00 / 1)
and for being so supportive.  I really appreciate it, even if I don't always say so directly to you.

Nothing (0.00 / 0)
to thank me for.  I love you youff and you would be here the same for me.  We're both animal people with pooties as our closest furry buddies.  Its kind of funny but sometimes I have a hard time picturing people I've lost over the years, but I can still picture every cat I've had just like they were sitting beside me now.
