Open Thoughts Friday

Sorry I don't have any music today.  I do, however, have a (somewhat disheveled from the 20-minute bus ride home) Ken's Special sandwich from Kenny & Zuke's to keep youze sated until lunch...

Enjoy, and have a good Friday!

Jay, what on EARTH (15.00 / 6)
is in that sandwich?  I can ID the rye bread & something that looks like corned beef, but the rest is a cipher.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed it.  :-D

Chopped liver, pastrami... (15.00 / 5)
...cole slaw and Russian dressing.  Yes, on rye.  Everything done in-house, of course!

;)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

And pastrami done the right way, of course! (14.83 / 6)
Thick hand-cut, none of this slicing machine nonsense!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Mmmmmmmm! :p (14.67 / 6)
Yummy!!

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh, and the side is of course... (10.40 / 5)
...an Eastern European-style vinegary slaw.  I chose that over the (excellent) potato salad, because I figured I should be healthy with the side, you see.

;)

Weighing in on a Friday morning: (14.67 / 6)
While we're on the subject of delicatessens,  There's a good deli in Brookline's Coolidge Corner where I go for breakfast every time I go to get my car serviced at the car dealer's over in Allston.  Since Coolidge Corner is within a good walking distance, I walk up there and have something to eat while I'm waiting.  The Nova (smoked salmon) Combination plate and the smoked Whitefish plates are excellent choices, but I always have the Nova Combination when I'm up there.  Sometimes, I'll even have buttermilk pancakes, either with or without fruit, or even chocolate chips, and sausage links on the side.  Not the greatest food-fare regarding cholesterol (which I don't have a history of problems with), but I figure ...eh...once in a blue moon won't hurt me.  I'm healthy, but I can't take my health for granted anymore, but splurging once in awhile won't hurt, I figure. Heee.  Sometimes,  when I'm going to an evening movie at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, which is also in the vicinity, I'll go and have a bite to eat at the Deli,or some other restaurant while waiting, since they sometimes have good Soups of the Day.  This also won "The Best of Boston" award regarding delis one year, too.  The name of this deli escapes me at the moment, I'll   have to remember it the next time I go back there.

They've had other delis in that area that've gone out of business, only to be replaced by others;  Jack & Marions, Zathmary's, and now this one.

Furthur up Harvard Street in Brookline's Coolidge Corner, there's a great Japanese restaurant, that serves all kinds of sushi combos and other dishes.  Since raw fish has never, ever appealed to me, I go for a dish called "The Volcano". which is a combination of all kinds of cooked fish and bread crumbs and seasonings, and is piled up so that it looks kind of like a small volcano!  It's delicious, to boot....and very filling.

Oh, and last but not least, there's a JP Licks Ice Cream in Coolidge Corner, too.  Since JP Licks Ice Cream shops are sprouting up all over the place, there's also one in Boston's Jamaica Plain Section, one in Cambridge's Harvard Square, and also one in Arlington Center.  JP Licks Ice Cream is great, but more expensive, and the people who work there are sort of cool also.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

ok (15.00 / 4)
i'll fess up.
i've never had chopped liver or pastrami.
rye bread (or pumpernickel) is to be toasted & slathered with butter & topped with alpine lace swiss cheese & eaten for breakfast...
but then i can only get rye (or pumpernickel) in the city... about an hour away.

that black cherry is calling my name.

how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"

Awww, sorry! (15.00 / 4)
You must make a Pastrami Pilgrimage one day, if at all possible!

I'd recommend Kenny & Zuke's, of course.  Because I'm a homer, heh.  And Hobby's in Newark NJ.  But other places you'd want to hit, in case you find yourself in the vicinity, would be Katz's in Manhattan, Mill Basin Kosher in Brooklyn, Langer's in LA, Zingerman's in Ann Arbor MI, Saul's in Berkeley CA, I Love NY Deli in Seattle, a few more featured in David Sax' Save the Deli, and oh!!!  The new(-ish) Neal's Deli in Carrboro, NC!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

As for me... (15.00 / 4)
As for me, my goal is to hit Deli King of Clark next time I'm back in NJ, which despite all my years back there in NJ I somehow managed never to visit.

I'm gonna make up some chopped liver this weekend, pick up some chciken livers from the farmers' market tomorrow probably.  I've been dreaming of doing my own pastrami, but I have no access to a smoker, nor any way to rig one up short of buying a wok (there's a cool trick involving aluminum foil that can turn a wok into a mini-smoker) and leaving it outside where it would surely be stolen overnight.  I can certainly do my own corned beef, though!

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
Oh, btw Youff... (15.00 / 4)
I didn't forget about hitting the KOI taco truck!  Just didn't get a chance this week.  Actually, I did stumble across them in the South Park Blocks downtown on Wednesday, they were there at the farmers' market*, but I was in a rush to do other things and actually to pick up the very meal you see above on the way back home for a late lunch / early dinner. :)

Next week I think I can stop there if I have the time.  I do want to try it...

*oh and there was also some German folk festival thing going on there in the park that afternoon, too.  Bunch of guys dressed in the exact same outfits, with the green suspenders and feathered hats and all, and doing the exact same dancing thing** they did in that scene in National Lampoon's European Vacation, if you've ever seen that movie?  I kept waiting for Chevy Chase to start a slapfight with the guys!  Heh.  Gha, wish I had brought my camera!  It was packed, though.  Huge crowd, beautiful day.

**sorry I don't know what it's called, my knowledge of German customs and traditions is completely nonexistent

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

It's way too early (15.00 / 4)
for Oktoberfest, so I dunno.  Sounds like fun, though.

And yes, I remain curious about the Korean tacos.

And wish I had access to good pastrami.  Yum!

Preseason Coaches' Poll... (15.00 / 3)
College football's back soon!

:)

The 2010 Preseason USA Today Coaches' Poll is out.

No surprises in the Top 5 - Alabama, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, Boise State.

As for the Good Guys (!) - Rutgers gets no votes (grrrr), Michigan State gets ten votes and Oregon starts the season ranked Number 11 overall.

Surprises - Iowa at 10?  Gtfouttahere!  Nebraska at 9 is about five spots too high, as well.  I'd bump Wisconsin up to Number 10, one spot ahead of Oregon.  Penn State is overrated as usual, by about 3 or 4 spots I'd say.  (sorry Youff!)

Arkansas at 19?  Eh, I guess.  Sounds kinda high, though.  I don't think they look any better than Oregon State, Georgia, Florida State or West Virginia.  Auburn seems kinda high to me, I'd at least put WVU ahead of them.  Arizona State getting 6 votes (and Temple only getting 2) surprises me.

Hey, where are the mighty Trojans?!  Oh heh, that's right!  Insert that Simpsons' "Ha Ha!" thingy...

;)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Last call for TBFL (Yahoo Fantasy Football) (15.00 / 3)
Email me at timbuk3_98 at yahoo-dot-com and I'll send you the url, login, and password. We have 5, now, with room for 12. If you don't sign up by the middle of next week you'll miss out because I'll pull in players other ways by then.

Jay, are you interested?

[ Parent ]
Thanks... (13.00 / 4)
But that's okay!  I'm the only person left in America who doesn't do fantasy football...

;)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
No you're not (13.00 / 4)
I don't do it either.

[ Parent ]
heh...me either (15.00 / 3)
Oh, and Jay?  Penn State very well might be overrated.  But they're kinda like the Mets: don't count them out, either.

Oh, believe me... (15.00 / 2)
You can always count the Mets out these days.  Unfortunately...

How Republicans REALLY Behave (14.60 / 5)
This is a re-enactment of your typical day in the House or Senate when a Republican wants to advance one of their typical reverse-Robin-Hood ideas. This is why Democrats cannot stay home this November and let the Tea Party crowd put these children back in power. The American middle class cannot afford another minute of their slimy, self-serving policies.

h/t to DU poster "gadjitfreek"

Well said, Timbuk: (15.00 / 5)
The American middle class cannot afford another minute of [the GOP's] slimy, self-serving policies.

I came here after reading about Sheriff Joe (Arpaio) over at GOS.  And Michelle Bachmann, same place.  Both need to be voted out, and it doesn't look very likely in either case.  (To be honest, I'm not sure Joe's up for reelection this year, but Bachmann is.)

The good/bad news earlier today was from TN:  Basically, all the teabag candidates there got their asses whipped in the primary by more moderate GOPers.  Seems they went too far even for TN.

The bad news, of course, is that by choosing moderate GOPers in the primary, the Republican voters have made the general election tougher for the Democratic candidates.

We shall see.  Maybe the teabaggers will stay home and the Dems will mount a massive get-out-the-vote effort there.  But I'm not holding my breath.

And if this symphony (or whatever) ever ends, I will watch your video.

Very funny video (15.00 / 5)
It was Dvorak's Symphony No. 7, btw, and I kept thinking surely it is now crescendoing to its climax...about 3 times before it actually did.  Beautiful, but very long.  (I like concerti the best.)
