Sunday Open Thoughts

One of my daughters friends got a job offer out of the blue from Epic.  They seem to make software for healthcare.  I don't know if their product is any good but I do know I like some of their rules and benefits.

Here's a little bit about them:

We love our 500-acre campus - it's a blend of pastoral and urban, of Midwestern charm and a quirky sensibility that's uniquely Epic.

We're an IT company dedicated to improving healthcare, and we work with some of the most influential healthcare organizations in the world. Our customers win awards. Our software wins awards.

Alma :: Sunday Open Thoughts
The campus seems to be unique for a software business:

We're committed to environmental stewardship, with a promise to leave a large majority of our property undeveloped. Epic uses sustainable materials, obtaining them from local sources whenever possible. We recycle approximately 65% of our construction waste, and the geothermal system we use to heat and cool our buildings is one of the largest in the country.

And we still have a working farm. With cows.

The work environment is decorated with art bought locally and:

Since we need to look outside ourselves and to the future, we've named our buildings with astronomy in mind. Who wants a cubicle in "Building A" when you can have an office in Andromeda?

And with this many people and buildings, it's easier to find your way with unique themes. If you're in the jungle, you know you're in Deneb. The springtime garden tells you Ganymede, and the New York subway takes you to Fomalhaut.

We can't wait for Heaven...the theme is toys.

My absolute favorite is the dress code:

Epic's dress code is simple: "When there are visitors, you must wear clothes."

We've never had a violation.

They have lots of places to eat and relax like the coffee shop:

One of our many hangouts, The Black Dragon is a French café in summer and an English Tea room in winter. We offer locally roasted coffee, a variety of loose teas, and pastries from our own kitchen.

My second favorite is the tree house:

If you need a place to escape or do some serious project planning, take the rope bridge over to our tree house. It's made of leftover construction material, and it looks like kids built it because, well, kids did. No pagers allowed.

They have all your normal benefits like healthcare and time off, but they also have some Not-So-Basic-Benefits:

Sabbaticals
Who says they're just for professors? Every 5 years, Epic gives you four weeks of paid time off (in addition to your normal vacation time) to do whatever you want. If you choose to spend that time exploring a country you've never visited before, most of the travel & hotel expenses for you and a companion are on us.

Motley Crew
With a staff of over 3,600 diverse individuals, it helps to have smaller communities so employees feel connected from day 1. As part of that effort, we're able to offer a vast collection of staff interest groups, clubs and teams. Epic's internal organization program, Motley Crew, means you'll be able to find (or create!) the perfect group to share your personal interests. Motley Crew groups are eligible to have as much as 50% of their operating costs reimbursed by Epic. From gaming and sports to language clubs and even volunteering, Motley Crew brings a welcome burst of excitement and engagement to your work week.

Odyssey
What's more Epic than going on an Odyssey? Every Odyssey trip encourages both the personal growth stimulated by travel and the renewal brought about by a good vacation. You'll have the opportunity to travel to thrilling locales - whether they're exotic and world-famous, or little-known wonders shared by an expert - while enjoying the company of friends, family, and of course fellow Epic staff. Best of all, Odyssey will take care of the boring details for you - we'll arrange airfare, lodging, activities and most of your meals. So take advantage of it!

Concierge
We've got a 24-hour onsite convenience shop where you can buy medicines, toiletries, snacks, frozen meals, reading materials - just about everything you might need. And we contract with local vendors for dry cleaning (including twice-weekly onsite pickup and delivery), as well as a once-weekly oil change service.

Campus
You have to see it to believe it. Our campus is beautiful, environmentally friendly, and shockingly cost-effective. The atmosphere is meant to inspire creativity and productivity - if you like where you're working, it helps you wake up excited, refreshed, and looking forward to the day. There are fun themes in the conference rooms, lots of natural light, plenty of fireplaces to make the winters cozy, and of course the art. We've got hiking and biking trails, ponds, staff vegetable gardens, a working farm, a campfire pit, and an outdoor recreation field, and on weekends you're welcome to bring in your pets. And don't miss the tree house or the waterfall...

Volunteering/Community Giving
Every year, Epic creates a list of local, national, and international charitable organizations. Each employee gets to choose one or more organizations from the list, and Epic then makes a donation on their behalf to the ones they chose. We also work with our customers and local organizations on other giving initiatives. And if it's time you're interested in donating, groups of Epic employees volunteer their personal time on a regular basis on evenings and weekends. These events don't require prior experience, so it's an easy way for you to help out a variety of organizations in the local community.

I sure wish there were more companies that look this fun to work for.

Holy shit, Alma... (12.67 / 3)
I want a job there!  Do you have to know anything about IT?  heh

That really sounds terrific: will she take the job?

Why I stopped by just now, though, was to link to some really funny satire on the rescued list at Orange:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyo...

Just to give you an idea:

When asked how the prospect of gay marriage might affect the sanctity of adulterers who remarry, Genital Member-in-Good Standing, Governor Mark "Invisible Man" Sanford, (R-SC), stated "The Gay is threatening the very survival of the traditions embodied in our bodies.  Talk of any deeper gay penetration into the fabric of society causes The League to go limp."

Go read the whole thing -- and try not to spew coffee on your monitor.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

Really enjoyed (15.00 / 3)
that one!  I set my coffee down before I read it. ;)  To bad I was to late to add a rec & tip.

I love satire, but sometimes its scary because its so true.

Thanks Youff that was one I'm definitly glad I didn't miss.

I don't know if Laura will take the job or not.  She'd have to move to Wisconsin.  But it would sure beat the Walmart job she has now!

The other thing I wanted to (15.00 / 3)
highlight is more serious.  There was an op-ed in today's (that is, Saturday's) NYT about structural defects in our economy.  It was by:

Edmund S. Phelps, the director of the Center on Capitalism and Society at Columbia University and winner of the 2006 Nobel Prize in Economics, is the author of "Structural Slumps" and "Rewarding Work."

Among the things he says is this:

In established businesses, short-termism has become rampant  Executives avoid farsighted projects, no matter how promising, out of a concern that lower short-term profits will cause share prices to drop. Mutual fund managers threaten to dump shares of companies that miss quarterly earnings targets. Timid and complacent, our big companies are showing the same tendencies that turned traditional utilities into dinosaurs.

Not sure I agree with him on absolutely everything, but it's worth reading.  Linky:

gha! (14.33 / 3)
alma, this sounds wonderful!
i hope she takes the job... i'd already BE there filling out the paperwork!

in a strange way it reminds me of the movie Toys... how all the workers were happy...

"Indeed, if a poor man will spend a year in prison for stealing out of hunger,
how high would the gallows need to be to hang the rich man?"
~The Patrician in 'Snuff' by Terry Pratchett

Sounds like (13.00 / 3)
a dream job to me.  Other than it being in Wisconsin.  She isn't married yet, nor have kids so with the economy being the way it is I think she should take it. Its not like chances like this come along everyday, and Lauras a quirky sweetheart (Her parents are DFH's too!) and this would fit her to a tee. If it doesn't work out she can always come home.

There were other nice benefits too that I didn't mention like shares in the company (Its both privatly and employee owned) and you can bring your pets to work on the weekends.
