Sweetie...I just wanted to apologize (9.00 / 6)
for Totally forgetting to do the Open today..  (scuffs feet, hangs head).

Then I went to email you, and gmail has changed its format: I can't even find the "compose mail" thingie right now.

Honestly, programmers should be forced to learn design before they are allowed to inflict their "ideas" on us.

Just sayin'.

Wtf is wrong with some people? (13.00 / 5)
Video McNugget rage

I guess at least she didn't pull a Michael Douglas in Falling Down, eh?  Wait a minute... actually, Michael Douglas didn't actually physically harm anyone in that scene.  So yeah, I guess this was worse.  Jim Kunstler's right when he says we're becoming a nation of violent clowns.

Video at the link...

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

Just so you know (12.33 / 6)
There will be a "mild" economic crash just prior to the elections in November. This will be an entirely manipulated crash, with the Dow dropping somewhere in the neighborhood of 10-15%. Gold will hold "steady", with a milder drop of a few percent.

The GOP will pick up some seats in both the House and the Senate, which will result in an unworkable government. Nothing of any importance will pass for the next 2 years. But, the Democrats will retain majorities in both houses, so they'll take all the blame for the worsening conditions. The corporate media will see to it, and they lack the messaging skills to counter the incessant drum-beat.

If you have a 401(k) or IRA pull everything out of the markets TODAY. Yesterday would have been better. Be ready to re-invest some time in late November or December to catch the upswing.

The 2 years of Obama's "lame duck" Presidency will be volatile. The wealthy and their GOP enablers will be working hard to squeeze the last pennies out of our retirement savings, so be ready to pull your retirement accounts out of the markets, even if you're "down" from the highs that will occur in the spring, at any time. Remember, they make money either way (up by investing, down by shorting), so they don't care about the damage they'll do. It's all about amassing as much "treasure" as they can before the crash.

No more "landmark" legislation will pass in the next 2 years. There will be no "explanation" for ongoing unemployment (especially amongst baby boomers) forthcoming, but those with eyes will know it's the greediest amongst us grabbing our retirement funds.

The goal is to sit on their "shining cities on the hill" looking down at us as we kill each other for the basic necessities of life. I don't see that "we" have caught on to this, yet, so it's very likely to happen.

I'm still kicking myself for believing Chris Dodd might have been a good POTUS. The "financial reforms" that have passed are far to weak to prevent the kind of market manipulation that is going to bankrupt the middle class.

heh (15.00 / 6)
are you saying there might be a correlation between the movements of the stock market and the fact that Wall Street donations this year favor Republicans by 2-1?

I shorted both the Dow and the Euro yesterday.  Though I still have some investments, the gains on those positions have taken away a bit of the sting from today's market weakness.

Have either of you read the (14.60 / 5)
8/9/10 issue of The New Yorker?

The main story is about how the Senate is completely broken.  I read it this a.m.

http://www.newyorker.com/repor...

It is a frightening condemnation of our broken political system.  Indeed, it makes the House of Reps. look like a center of comity and reason...and efficiency.

yikes (14.50 / 4)
I hadn't read that.  I keep thinking, "These people work for us.  We pay their salary."  Unreal.  We desperately need real campaign finance reform, lest the voters become completely irrelevant in our corporatist system.

[ Parent ]
Alas, they haven't worked for us since Reagan. (14.75 / 4)
They work for whichever corporation pays them the most.

Gah!  I wish that weren't true.  But it is.  I've watched this clusterfuck happening in slow motion for almost forty years now.

Say what you will about Clinton: his years were a respite, and the economy was great.  OK, I disagree with him signing the bill to repeal Glass-Steagall -- and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that repealing Glass-Steagall directly led to the financial implosion we've just seen.

I mean, MFG, the whole point of Glass-Steagall was to prevent exactly what happened in 2008.

But the Banksters are never happy unless they're running casinos.

Youff to banksters:  Get the fuck out of the banking business and go open a casino.  I hear there's lots of cheap property in Vegas these days.  But get the fuck away from Wall Street.  OK?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Oh, and as long as you already (13.00 / 4)
think I'm an idiot (^.^) allow me to prove it:

Is it OK to cook bacon in advance and just keep it in the fridge until you want it?

See, it's hot here & I haven't made BLTs in forever & that was my idea for my work weekend:  a bunch of BLTs.  I have all the ingredients:  but can I cook all the bacon tonight and it'll still be okay by Sunday?  Anyone know?  And what about the lettuce?  It's iceberg (I know, I know) but will it stay crisp if I wash & dry it now?  Or do it daily?

E. B. White

I buy cooked bacon at the store (15.00 / 4)
...so I'm assuming you'll be fine cooking the bacon all at once, ahead of time.

I've worked with people who liked lettuce on their sandwiches. They'd store it in a separate container, and add it to their sandwich when it was time to eat it. I don't know how far ahead of time they "prepared" it, though.

[ Parent ]
Thanks, Timbuk (13.50 / 4)
B/c my shift is so long, the more I can do in advance, the better.  I think I will fry all the bacon slices tonight and save the lettuce & tomatoes for when I actually assemble the sandwiches.  Veggies don't "keep" well once they are detached, if ya know what I'm attempting to say.

only (14.25 / 4)
do your lettuce if you dry it very well. ANY bit of moisture will encourage it to go slimy.

on bacon.... i'd cook it then wrap individual portions & freeze. take out & refrig one day before use... or put wax paper between slices & you'll need no thaw time as it'll thaw at work before you're ready to eat

O & (15.00 / 4)
usually one tomato makes 2 or 3 sammiches...
only cut what you need to make a sammich
then put the cut side down on a saucer, pop in fridge. it'll keep several days (2-3)like this.

[ Parent ]
Thanks, Ria - I'm with you on the lettuce (9.00 / 4)
(& tomatoes too) but why should I freeze the bacon?  I'm thinking two sandwiches a day=8 sandwiches by Sunday night.  Surely the bacon won't go bad between now and then?  It's commercial -- what with all the salt and other preservatives, bacon is one of the meats (ham is another) that I just never expect to go bad in fewer than two months, as long as it's in the fridge.

I bow to your expertise...but maybe I take after Dad.  At one point I threw out some hot dogs that were about three months too old...and he said something like, "But I just had one for lunch yesterday, and I didn't get sick."  !!!

meat after about 3 days in the fridge. maybe it'll be okay. i dunno.

also. i thought you didn't go back to work until sunday. i misread.

O! I called in on (14.50 / 4)
Monday, and much to my surprise the idiot had the schedule up on time!  Well, or so I was told.  So, yeah, my usual Thurs.-Sun. shift if M. was reading it correctly.

And I only trust raw meat like chicken or pork for about 3 days.  Anything that's been intensively treated with preservatives, well....

Our ancestors created ham and bacon so they would have meat all winter long.  Fresh meat certainly doesn't last.  But in the past four years, I've only thrown out bacon once.  I'm not sure how long it had lingered in my fridge before I decided it was bad...but it was more likely a couple of months than a couple of weeks.

dear dear youff (13.25 / 4)
I am so sorry about King Tut. I missed some happenings here in the past couple of weeks and when I went back to catch up yesterday I found out.

My family has had cats among us for many years and it always hurts to lose one, they are such good companions...

I lost one many years ago to an automobile and I have never forgotten him. He was such a beautiful animal and so full of life and so much fun to be around... I had to forgive myself for letting him out to play even though he was an indoor/outdoor fella and forgive him for the accident that happened and I guess I have managed to do that over time. It's not possible for some, I know, but this and the disappearance of another dear companion led us to the decision to keep our cats indoors. But, alas, even this did not stop a crafty little escapee from going missing last year and breaking our hearts again...

The only thing I can tell myself that makes it any better is that while we had them here they were very much loved. And even though their lives or the parts of it we shared with them were shortened, they were full most every day of hugs and pats and encouragement and play. We don't ever know when our babies will leave us or even if we will leave them, but we comfort each other while we can.

My thoughts are with you as you grieve your loss...

My dad used to... (15.00 / 4)
Is it OK to cook bacon in advance and just keep it in the fridge until you want it?

He was the cook growing up.  Sunday mornings were for bacon, and enough was fried up then that we were rushing to finish the leftovers in sandwiches / salads / pasta by Thursday.  He used to just wrap it in a paper towel inside a ziploc bag and it stayed at least those 5 days.  None of us ever got sick, at least!

Me, I don't really know.  When I want bacon, I take the bus down to the butcher the evening before.  You're right about the beginnings of bacon and that it can keep for quite awhile longer than other cuts of fresh meat.  Same thing goes for pastrami and other 'old country' preservation methods.

I had a package of Otto's Carlton Farms bacon in the fridge for about a month once before I fully finished it (note to self - never buy 2 lbs. of bacon at once when you live alone), and I'm still here. ;)

Pass me a bottle, Mr. Jones...

[ Parent ]
note to jay (14.33 / 3)
if you do buy 2lbs put one in the freezer. raw bacon freezes extremely well.

Heh, thanks... (15.00 / 3)
Never really thought about that.  I'm spoiled by living a 5-minute bus ride from two butcher shops (and ten minutes from two more) in both directions, I guess.

;)

That was me in NYC (15.00 / 3)
except they were fish purveyors.  But there IS a famous butcher shop at the SE corner of 39th and 9th that makes their own sausage.  We had a snowstorm one Saturday -- I think in 1995 -- four inches already and hardly any cars on the street except some intrepid cabbies.

Well, and I need groceries: no lines today, right?

Right.

Nobody at the veggie market.  Very few at the Greek importer.

20-minute wait at the butcher shop.  People were buying meat like they would never be able to again.

I can go through 2 pounds in 2 sittings, all by myself.  I thought everyone could.  ;)

[ Parent ]
yeah (10.33 / 3)
we used to buy 5lb packs to take camping. it'd be gone by the end of the first day.
i luurves me some bacon!
but recently i'm having to cut back on it... & potato chips. my feet start swelling by the end of the day if i eat too much.
:-(

Yeah, I'm sure I could, too...

But would it kill me overnight, is the question?

;)

If I die from overeating, it's gonna be pastrami and nothing else!

Sweetie... (12.00 / 3)
I was really broke at this point, and had been craving bacon for two or three months.  So my friend David went along with it.  He bought a pound for us.  I don't remember what all I did with it, but some went into biscuits, some went into a veggie side dish...oh, it was over a decade ago & I don't remember how all of it was prepared (some bacon fat became gravy) but NO part of that pound of bacon went to waste.

And my craving was cured for about two years!  (^.^)

OMG (15.00 / 2)
I have this horrible feeling that I will miss Arlen Specter.

Which is the same thing as saying, I am terrified Toomey will get elected.

No, I do NOT trust my fellow Pennsylvanians--why do you ask?

Lois Herr for PA-16!

http://www.herr2010.com/

If you have a few extra bucks, show Lois some love, OK?  We need to get rid of the pits -- that would be Joe Pitts.  Lois has an uphill battle: she'll probably win in the city but lose in the county.

And you've all heard about Joe Sestak:

http://joesestak.com/splash.html

I'm more optimistic on this one.  PA finally threw out Rick Scumtorum, I can't imagine why we'd elect Scumtorum squared.  But I don't trust anybody here: they are mostly imbeciles (except for Philly and Pittsburgh).

Am I an elitist?  Not really.  I just look down on people who refuse to use their brains.

Tonight's the best night. Tomorrow should be nearly as good.

It's cloudy here, tonight, so no point in staying up until 3 or 4 when the viewing is the best.
