Tuesday's Open ~ Reflections

No Te Rindas (don't give up)

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road we're on seems all uphill,
When our resources are low and debts are high,
And we want to smile but can only sigh,
When worries are pressing us down a bit,
Rest, if we must, but we cannot quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us often learns.
But many setbacks could turn about,
When we might have succeeded had we stuck it out.
So don't give up though the pace seems slow,
Success could be around the corner, keep plowing the row.

Photobucket

Victory is simply failure turned inside out,
The silver hue in dark clouds of doubt -
While in the storm we can't tell how close we are,
A breakthrough may be near, though it seems so far.
That's why we must keep striving when we're hardest hit,
It's when things are at their worst that we cannot quit.

I hope my liberal translation of Emilia's poem does it justice. the words in Spanish are so beautiful, and I've turned to them many times for inspiration when things get a bit rough.

my friend. I've missed you while I've been away.

Fine job (13.00 / 4)
translating.  Its beautiful.  Got me a little teary eyed.  It's one of those poems that give us hope and remind us how quickly things can flip for the good, so never stop trying.  I can see why you go back to it in times of trouble.

The pics are gorgeous too!  :)

Little Miss Lollerskates spent most of the day eating lettuce yesterday.  Its slow going for her and she needs lots of syringed drinks inbetween but she's getting there.  I think I'm going to try and get her drinking from her water bottle today.  When she comes over for drinks I'm going to hold and offer her the bottle first.  I don't know if she will go for it or not.  Even if her mouth is ready to use the bottle she might not go for it because the bottle doesn't have yummy squash juice in it.

this is such wonderful news, sister (13.25 / 4)
I'm so happy for you and Katie that Lala is getting better!

sorry (11.25 / 4)
i haven't been around much. i'm still trying to list a lot of my shit wonderful stuff on eBay trying to get some money coming in. mrD is out of work again. the last guy he worked for owes him/us nearly $2000... always some excuse for not having the full amount each week & promises to pay that always fell through....& taking him to court will cost us money up front that we just don't have.

sometimes life just sux big ones y'know?

Sara has a new quilt project that she's asked me to be a part of... making wheelchair quilts for people with MS. soon she'll have an essay up about it, which i've asked her to cross-post here. hopefully i can make a bit of money doing this & help others also. i can hardly wait for this to get off the drawing board.

oh, Ria (11.20 / 5)
I know how you and Mr. D are feeling - I'm still trying to collect on a catering job from months ago, and each time I look at our dwindling bank account balance I'm furious all over again. it never ceases to amaze me how those who can obviously afford it so easily take advantage of those with obviously so much less. and they know damn good and well that we can't afford an attorney to take them to court, so me and Juan are left with nothing but a bitter experience, and the "glow" that some rich fucks folks enjoyed one hell of a meal on our dime! I could understand it if the food had sucked, but since we got 2 other jobs from people at the party that wasn't the case at all...

teaming up with Sara on the new project sounds incredible! I'm so happy for you!!!

I'm sorry this happened to you and Juan, newp! (9.00 / 2)
There's far too many people like that in our society (especially our society) and in the world, generally.

Have you thought of trying to obtain a Legal Aide?  Legal Aides are people who take cases where the plaintives can't afford a regular attorney.  Just curious.

Keep us all posted.   All the best of luck and more power to you.

Weighing in on a Tuesday (after)noon: (14.17 / 6)
Hi, newp!  Thanks for the beautiful pictures and the poem!  They're so cool....and moving!

Hi, all!  I saw the movie The Big Lebowski last night, at the Coolidge Corner Theatre.  The place was packed to the gills...Lebowski played to a sold-out house!!  It's kind of a wierd movie that I didn't know what to make of at times, but I enjoyed it.  While it's definitely not West Side Story, it was definitely worth seeing.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

hey Miki! (11.80 / 5)
so glad you had a great time at the theater! hope all's going well for you and your girl, Aziza  :O)

Hi, newp! (13.00 / 4)
Thanks very much for your encouragement and support.  Aziza and I are doing well.  I had a wonderful time at the theatre last night.

:)

Good to see you posting here again, btw.  Welcome back!!

What's it about, Miki? (14.00 / 4)
I've never seen The Big Lebowski but have read that it's good.  Any thoughts?  Heh: of course it isn't West Side Story, but what is ir?

Well, Youff: (14.83 / 6)
The Big Lebowski, which is a rather wierd movie, is about a young, hippie-ish guy who is named Lebowski, who is mistakenly identified as a big-time lawyer with a ton of money on him, who's also named Lebowski, and the younger Lebowski, who's unemployed, ends up in all kinds of wierd situations, meeting all kinds of wierd people.  A hard movie for me to make out at times, but I decided to explain it as best I could.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

[ Parent ]
Is it a comedy? (14.40 / 5)
I am not laughing at your description, exactly, b/c I suspect your description is dead-on accurate.  But I had to chuckle a few times, with the Lebowski/Lebowski confusion:  it sounds kind of like a comedy.

It sounds like something Shakespeare would have written:  comedy of errors, mistaken identities -- really, the only thing missing is women pretending to be men (see Twelfth Night).

I'm not a big "Lebowski"phile, but (15.00 / 2)
I'd say that The Big Lebowski is a tragicomedy of sorts, and that this:

It sounds like something Shakespeare would have written:  comedy of errors, mistaken identities -- really, the only thing missing is women pretending to be men (see Twelfth Night).

is a rather accurate description.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I love The Big Lebowski (12.67 / 3)
So many classic scenes and lines. I think my favorite is either when the sheriff throws the ashtray at him, or "Dammit, Walter, why do you have to turn everything into a travesty?"

It's hard to say, though. The screaming woman flying at the canvas, the bowling scenes (it's not coming to me, but wasn't "Jesus" a pedophile?), the confrontation in the parking lot, "I can't drive, it's SHABASSS (sp?, but that's how he pronounced it)".

Man, I gotta watch it again.

[ Parent ]
Hey Youf, (14.17 / 6)
The Big Lebowski is absolutely terrific!

It's a comedic homage to film noir, wherein Jeff Bridges plays "the Dude," an aging hippie / bowler / alcoholic who gets caught up in a labyrinthine con game.

It's really great fun and the movie has a big cult following.

In fact, every year me and some of my buds hold a Lebowski-Fest.  We go bowling, drink white russians (Lebowski's favorite drink in the movie) and then watch the movie while passing around the herbage.

A good time, for sure.

Cheers!

The Big Lebowski is one of our favourite movies too...

Oh, now I really feel (10.20 / 5)
deprived...

(I'm depraved on accounta I'm deprived).

Wish I could watch it with y'all.

This slays me! (10.33 / 3)

It's called "Dude-Vinci."

There was a small bowling fest in the Coolidge Corner Theatre prior to the screening of "Big Lebowski", (14.67 / 6)
which I missed, but got there in time for the movie, anyhow.    There's a big "Lebowski" cult here in the Boston area, also.
