OT: Tropical links (12.00 / 4)
Hi newp,
I've been covered up with work here all of a sudden. I went from one active project to five in the span of three days, none of them easy jobs - but I have done some rearranging of my weather links, just not quite ready to call it organized yet. It's still pretty much a big mess and I'm the only one who could possibly make sense of it. I'm still clearing out links to Katrina-specific info - 5 years later, and making sure links are still working properly. Since we haven't had a lot of activity yet I haven't done the usual seasonal cleanup that happens when I get to rockin' and rollin' on a big storm...

I'm looking forward to using a new set of cleaned up links, though. After a decade of accumulation, my bookmark file is like a hoarder's house - "Oh, yes, the ticket stubs from the 1997 ferry trip in Maine are on the bottom of THAT stack over by the wall in the corner, the one with the orange plastic bags on top - no, no, not the blue plastic bags, the orange ones" - LOL!

Anyway, it looks like you guys are in the clear from hurricanes for at least another short period of time right now. The waves rolling off Africa right now seem to start out looking impressive and then dissipate as they cross the ATL. We do have one or two that bear watching at the moment, though. My guess is that it will be another week to ten days before a big one can start up and survive to make landfall somewhere, but, as always, that forecast could change in the next six hours!

thanks, irev! (10.50 / 4)
and as you say, we've got our eyes on a couple of storm systems that have redeveloped to our south. and the waves off of Africa continue... not a very reassuring start to August.

Are you at Big Orange? (15.00 / 4)
He hasn't posted lately, that I know of, but there was/is a dKos diarist who is also a meteorologist who used to track hurricanes about two-three years ago, if memory serves.

I didn't always understand the scientific language, but I can read a weather map, and he provided plenty of those.

Kinda miss that guy.

Newp: hoping you get some respite from extreme weather.  When I went to work today (yesterday by now) it was very humid, but not as brutally hot as it has been.  Philly is expecting a break tomorrow (my radio station online is out of Philly so I get their weather) and if so, we should get a break tomorrow, too.  I'm about 60 miles west of there.

English usage is sometimes more than mere taste, judgment and education - sometimes it's sheer luck, like getting across the street.

I still have an account there (13.75 / 4)
Under a different alias and I delurk once every year to leave a choice comment, usually to express my gratitude to someone who has done/is doing something extraordinary at great personal risk for a good cause. I left at the time of the infamous pie fight when the BigK himself dissed "women's studies types". Every time I've crossed paths with a mysogynist I've found out sooner or later that they are also a sociopathic asshole in every other regard, too. And every time some asshole posts a diary with a poll that includes some stupid 'pie' choice, it just reaffirms my decision to stay away as much as possible from the toxicity there...

However, I do intend to do something about the weather. Hang on til Wednesday when I plan to launch a Wednesday Weather Wonk series. I hope to have a plain old wordpress-type blogsite up by then and I will crosspost here. I'm not a degreed meteorologist but I do have formal training in the subject and lots of training in relevant fields as well. I will also try to keep fireflies posted about hurricanes. The season is about to get cranked up.

I don't do local forecasting for 'regular weather'. I'm mostly interested in forecasting tropical cyclones and tornado outbreaks and have focused my self study in those areas. They are quite different tasks and have required me to learn a wide and deep array of weather facts, though.

Hope you get some good sleep and don't have to work too hard tomorrow!
