First Avenue in Portland was like Delancy Street in New York City. There were butchers and little grocery stores, Mosler's Bakery and Dr. Wolfe's barbershop. In those days not only did the barber cut hair and do shaves but if you had a problem he'd put leeches on. - Jerry Stern
The tight ethnic community had kosher butcher shops, bakeries, synagogues and Italian delis before a series of highway projects cut it to shreds. By the time the 1960s urban renewal project razed 54 blocks, many immigrant families had left South Portland for more prestigious neighborhoods like Laurelhurst and Irvington.
Sorry I don't have any music today. I do, however, have a (somewhat disheveled from the 20-minute bus ride home) Ken's Special sandwich from Kenny & Zuke's to keep youze sated until lunch...
We had a little party of our own here yesterday in my neck of SE Portland, and 'blast' could be used in more ways than just what the sun gave us! 90 degrees by noon, yikes! Street trees abound here fortunately, so my pale and easily-burning Polish-Irish ass had plenty places to hide.
The 2010 Division-Clinton Street Fair, let me show you it!
Friday morning. Computer slow here. Near its end. Bit the bullet, and I will finally have wireless set up in the ole' apartment today. Should be able to finally switch over to my new (old) laptop in a few hours if all goes according to plan.
That means I can maybe post a photo diary later today! And harass youze with music videos in my Friday posts again.
We'll see how things go. I'll know one way or the other by about 2 PM. Pacific.
